About this game
A music-based platformer where the platforms are your own musical loops! Run and jump through puzzling platforming challenges while adding your own notes to the game's original soundtrack to create a path to reach the end!
Platforming in SongRunner is always precise, sometimes puzzly, and extremely expressive. Your own solution to levels will make a unique melody that blends seamlessly with the completely original soundtrack! SongRunner is inspired by other hard-but-fair platformers like Celeste, Super Meat Boy, and N++.
SongRunner features fully rebindable controls, and USB Midi devices are also supported! Rebind all of the inputs to whatever you're most comfortable with. No musical knowledge is necessary to play SongRunner.
Adventure through 10+ worlds, each with its own unique soundtrack, instrument, mechanics, and secrets! You'll contend with a variety of rhythmic hazards, platforming puzzles, and a few other surprises I won't spoil here.
SongRunner was originally made for the 2025 Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam and was featured as one of 20 favorites in the official GMTK results.
No AI was used in any part of SongRunner's development.
About the Demo
I believe a demo for SongRunner is important to help players understand if the unique controls of the game will be suitable for them. The demo is a short, standalone experience featuring shorter versions of five worlds from the full game.

Hello!! NEW DEMO available now!
Hello! It's been a bit! I think my last announcement on here was when i took the Next Fest demo down. well you're never gonna guess what just happened. i put a new demo up.im just a guy so i dont have a team of cool people helping me to organize my thoughts and changelogs, so im just gonna rattle of some neat new stuff in the demo off the top of da dome:new levels (duh)new music (duh)a fricking TON of fixes, tweaks, improvements, optimizations, etc. that are all somewhat invisible to you (the player) but very meaningful and satisfying for me (the developer)a small overworld to tie the stages together instead of a level select screen (this will be way cooler in the full game i promise)a lot of new types of stagesthe last level was so much work please i really hope you can make it thereok that's literally all i got right now. if any publisher wants to sign up to help me be better at marketing and maybe some other stuff too please comment on this post thanks.maybe the next post here will have a release date ..??? we'll see.thanks for reading!!MattRead full article on Community Announcements (MattGoode)AnnouncementsOfficial
SongRunner news and dev status
Hello! Been meaning to put together a little update like this for a while now. I'm a solo dev and I'm very hard at work on making SongRunner as good as it can be. I've been sharing some gameplay vids on Bluesky, YouTube, Tiktok, and Instagram to help gauge excitement, and have actually been blown away by how supportive and encouraging people have been. For the past 6 weeks or so I've been posting 3 videos a week. Combined across all platforms, those videos have somehow gathered up almost 10 million views. It's incredibly exciting to see this kind of reaction to SongRunner. This past weekend, SongRunner broke 4,000 wishlists on Steam (!!) which is already like 5 times more than You Have To Climb Out ever had, and we still have quite a ways to go before SongRunner launches.Oh wait that's a good segue. Ok, so here on Steam, I list a vague "2026" release date. I was very loosely aiming for that to be true with a November/December release, but I am also extremely aware that solo game development is really really really hard and sometimes you spend a whole week on the screen where you select a save file (hi yes it's me). SongRunner could easily slip to early 2027. Just wanted to put that out there. As for the demo that's currently on Steam - I said in a previous post that I'd likely keep it up indefinitely. However, the game naturally evolves quite a bit as I keep working on it, and it's getting to the point that the demo that's on Steam is not a very accurate representation of how it will feel to play the game when it launches. At the same time, I want there to be a demo always available so that people can see if this wacky little platformer is up their alley or not. The bottom line is that it's looking pretty likely that I'll be taking the demo down for some period of time and then putting up a "demo 2.0" within a few months or so.That's all I've got for this post! Excited to share more details in the future!Read full article on Community Announcements (MattGoode)Patch NotesOfficial

Next Fest thank you + demo availability + release plans
Hello! If you're seeing this then you probably played the SongRunner demo and/or wishlisted the game, so thank you thank you thank you!I'm a solo dev and after working on a few small tutorial projects and game jams, this is only my second Steam release ahhhhh so seeing any number of players jumping in to the game and leaving their impressions (or not!) brings me great joy. I know a lot of devs will take their demo down after Next Fest, so I just wanted to say that this version of the SongRunner demo will stay available for at least several weeks after Next Fest ends. It's very possible that I create a new demo in the future and replace this one, but I currently don't have a timeline for that. Whatever my timeline winds up being, I'll almost certainly continue to have a demo available through release and beyond, because I think this game's funky control scheme definitely deserves to be tested before you decide to buy it.I also just wanted to leave a short list of (some) features I'm planning on including as I head toward full release, which I'm very lightly planning for later in 2026. fully rebindable inputsMIDI input supportmore of... well everything. i have a lot of ideas for fun level mechanics, and of course every new level needs another song to go with it.and a couple things I'm still deciding on:a custom level builder, including support for any song you wanta way to export or share a solution you've made to a level since you can make some pretty neat bopspersonally, i frickin love when a platformer game has an overworld that you can freely walk around in and there are cute lil secrets and stuff to find 👀finally, a lot more polish. this is a very early demo. my goal was to have a handful levels together in order to get some impressions from others on this relatively unique music+platforming gameplay mechanic, and I've learned a lot over the past couple weeks. Thanks again for checking out SongRunner! I'm so excited to get back to work and make this thing as good ...Read full article on Community Announcements (MattGoode)Patch NotesOfficial
Demo update notes - 1.0.4
More difficulty adjustments! Tweaked quite a few rooms so the progression of difficulty is a bit smoother all around. Also made level 1, 2, and 3 star times a good bit easier to get. level 3 secret is hopefully a bit easier to figure outRead full article on Community Announcements (MattGoode)
