Control a steam engine on an exotic planet, sorting freight cars through increasingly complex sidings. Freight Misconductor from MsAsterisk challenges your strategic skills in this indie simulation that keeps you hooked.
About this game
Freight Misconductor is a pixel art railroad switching puzzle game, inspired by model railway shunting puzzle layouts like A. Wright's Inglenook Sidings and J. Allen's Timesaver.
In Freight Misconductor, you operate SLYM #11513, a modern Advanced Steam Locomotive on the alien planet Gymnome, to shunt trains between siding tracks in increasingly convoluted rail yards, while minimizing your move count and time so as to hopefully keep your Engineer and Conductor-Brakegoo's spirits up.
Are you ready to be an alien railroader? Yes? Good.
Welcome to Planet Gymnome
Sorry about the mess. You see, a global oil crisis has just befallen the planet, and as a result diesel trains have had to be replaced by modernized steam engines. No matter; there's still work to be done, lots of freight to move. Big articulated steam engines shift thousands of tons of freight all across the planet's railways.
But that's not your job. Your locomotive is a switcher, tasked with shunting cars within a single rail yard at a time. Sometimes you're building trains for other crews, sometimes you're servicing industries connected to the railroad, sometimes you're just cleaning up after the last train crew who didn't do their job right! Either way you've got your work cut out for you, many of these yards have rather tight and complex track plans which make maneuvering your cars across the yard quite the challenge!
Each level in Freight Misconductor is a new railyard at a different station on the South Lymer Railway (SLYM), a 3.04₆ glip (1096mm) narrow gauge line with interchanges for many other nearby railways and plenty of industries to serve. There's over 20 hours of gameplay across story mode and standalone challenges, and that's before accounting for the replay value added by the randomization of car placements!
(And of course the game respects your time by ensuring you can save and quit at any time without losing progress, so you can work on even the longest levels in bite-size chunks without losing your flow.)
Meet the Crew

Auranjuse and Blaeb, your Advanced Steam locomotive's Gymnomi goo crew.
Auranjuse, the Conductor/Brake slimegirl, delivers the work orders from dispatcher or the yard manager, and they help with throwing the switches and coupling cars. Blaeb, the slime Engineer--that's you--runs the engine and determines which cars need to be coupled or uncoupled and which switches to throw. Blaeb is eager to please--and to Auranjuse that means finishing the job as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Just not so quickly that you end up derailing cars or damaging sensitive cargo.
Features
Physics based train simulation with momentum, slack action, and derailment.
Simple controls mode (forward/backward) for casual gamers.
Advanced controls mode (brake, throttle, reverser) for railfans or those looking for an extra challenge.
Over 50 levels with over 20 hours of gameplay.
Save/Load within levels to chew through even long levels in bite-size chunks.
Two playable locomotive classes:
Advanced Steam Mallet Tank Engine: a small modernized steam shunter with electromechanical controls.
Broad Gauge Garratt: a huge articulated steam locomotive with manual controls and a gamified steam simulation.
Dual Gauge rail yard levels--a first for the genre! Switch train cars that are too big for your own tracks!
Narrative cutscenes featuring the alien crew of the train.

Freight Misconductor's New Name
Due to a frustrating trademark dispute, the name of this game has been changed from "Train Misconductor" to "Freight Misconductor."As of time of writing, the game's name has been updated everywhere except for the name of the demo in the steam library. The demo itself uses the new title in-game.If you can not launch the game, please verify the integrity of game files and try again. User data stored in ".../AppData/Roaming/Godot/app_userdata/Train Misconductor" will not be automatically moved to ".../AppData/Roaming/Godot/app_userdata/Freight Misconductor." That means you will lose your settings and your save files.Read full article on Community Announcements (Whirligig Girl)Patch NotesOfficial
v0.4.8.3: Bug fixes and functional feedback forms
There was a technical difficulty with the feedback form, which has now been fixed. If you have played the demo before 2026-Feb-12 at about 2:20 eastern standard time, please go back into the game and re-submit your feedback. There's a few other fixes, see the full change notes below:* Demo: * Feedback form actually works for realsies. * Disabled the key, which is used for locomotive transfer--there is only one loco per level in the demo.* Bugs: * Fix for destinations not being fulfilled when reloading a save. * Order sheet margins now adapt to screen size.EDIT: put out a minor fire where the locomotive did not work.Read full article on Community Announcements (Whirligig Girl)AnnouncementsOfficial
Train Misconductor is coming to Steam NextFest
Train Misconductor is going to be a part of Steam NextFest, a showcase of upcoming games, and as such the demo has been released ahead of the event itself. We've been working on this game for over a year now and we're very excited to get it--or a small piece of it--into the hands of players. The demo contains the first seven levels of the quick-play mode of the game, about an hour of content. (Not counting replay value granted by the randomization element of the Inglenook level!)Download the demo through the store page now! Dual Gauge Devlog
One of the features I've wanted to have in the game for a long time, and one which really makes this game unique among train games, plays into the backstory of railroading on planet Gymnome: Dual Gauge switching. In the distant past, north/south wagonway paths were used for migrating between different biomes as the planet's climate changed throughout the course of a 30-year-long "Omicycle," described previously in the FAQ. These wagonways became the first railways, but each was a different gauge. When the railways developed steam traction and started expanding east and west, they would merge with the smaller railways, but eventually they would meet another large network. There would invariably be a break of gauge, where the spacing between the rails differs between two railways, and at that point it would be irreconcilable--both railways would be just too big to regauge. This repeated at various different longitudes across the planet, so there's several incompatible gauges. (This happens on Earth too, but it's even more widespread on Gymnome)The SLYM--the main setting of the game--is a narrow gauge railway with a gauge of about a meter. But it is a subsidiary road of a larger (in both gauge and scale) roughly 1.8 meter broad gauge railway. In order to run trains between narrow and broad gauge locations without stopping to trans-load, there's a lot of overlap in the form of a dual gauge railway, which uses three rails to provide track of two gauges. The railyards are considerably more complex, as there is still plenty of underlap in the track plans of each gauge. The Broad Gauge introductory level, showcasing a situation where the cars can go places the loco can't--the switch is only a switch for the broad gauge cars, the whole track is linear for the locomotive.Another new feature that plays into this is...Loco Transfer! There can be multiple locomotives per level, and they can be switched between using the key on the control stand. One of the most important concepts in T...Read full article on Community Announcements (Whirligig Girl)
