Content notice: There is no sexual content in the game. Battles do occur but they are highly abstracted; consisting of two portraits on either side of the screen and dice rolled in a box between them. Players may have cards by the box with pictures of weapons on them. References and allusions are made to madness, loss, injury and hospitalization. These are, for the most part, played straight though they are not heavily emphasized or dwelt on.

From Table To Screen: How To Be Random Without Dice
Greetings, Investigators!Today we’re going to look behind the curtain at the actual process of turning a board game into a video game. Specifically, we’re going to talk about dice. These lovable little blocks are known to players of games far and wide. They’ve arguably existed for at least 4,000 years. Their purpose has been to add random elements. It is simple enough: roll the die, see the number. A different experience than simply selecting one yourself. The fun in making a computer game is that this simple tool is not available. Computers are what we call deterministic systems. They can only follow specific rules to give any output. This makes generating a truly random number with them impossible. Thus, any time a board game asks for something as simple as rolling a die, a computer must do something entirely different. Many systems generate a pseudo-random number based on an algorithm and seed. Since the computer is deterministic, the same seed will always result in the same number. This is usually done by using the system time of the computer itself, down to the millisecond or even nanosecond, to act as the seed when the random number is requested. This makes it virtually impossible for a human to get the exact same seed twice in a row on demand. Another method would be to use the output of something like a Xorshift algorithm, which maintains and transforms a bit state, to function as a seed. The process doesn’t end at simply generating a number, however! Using the first number generated can limit player agency in a game and create frustration. When a player sees a 60% chance of success, even a small skew from the average can make it feel more like 20% chance even if it wasn’t. Some systems account for this by providing a ‘player advantage’, such as generating two numbers and using the one more favorable to the player. Thus, when working with dice rolls in an adaptation like this, we have to account for not only how we make a pseudo-random number, but also how that e...Read full article on Community Announcements (sales)AnnouncementsOfficial

New Investigators - Basics Of Play
Well Met, Investigators:This article is primarily for all new investigators out there but will also be useful for veterans curious about the interface for play in Eldritch Horror: Digital Edition. The gameplay of Eldritch Horror takes place over three phases: the Action Phase, the Encounter Phase and the Mythos Phase. In the Action Phase, investigators perform actions to move about the game board and prepare for the tasks ahead. In the Encounter Phase, investigators fight Monsters or resolve encounter cards on their current space. In the Mythos Phase, The Lead Investigator resolves one Mythos card. These cards often advance Doom, spawn Gates or raise other challenges that investigators will need to overcome. For the digital edition, the Action Phase primarily takes place here at what CSDI internally calls ‘the map screen’:As can be seen, in this instance, an investigator was acquiring a ship ticket. This is one of several actions an investigator can take. During the Action Phase, the investigators may perform the following actions with each action receiving a special symbol denoting the button you would press to do it in the digital edition. They are: Travel Rest Trade Prepare For Travel Acquire Assets Component Actions**We’re not going to be covering these today due to article length. They will be activated in different ways than the standard buttons. In the Encounter Phase, players will be presented with encounter cards and monsters, which will alternate them between their view of the map and a roll screen:During this phase, if an investigator is on a space containing one or more monsters, the investigator must resolve a single combat encounter against each monster on that space, one at a time, in the order of the investigator’s choice. After an investigator resolves all combat e...Read full article on Community Announcements (sales)Patch NotesOfficial
A Note From The Team: Eldritch Horror Digital Edition - Launch Update
A Note From The Team: Eldritch Horror Digital Edition - Launch Update Hey, Investigators: We have some news to share and we want to be straight with you about it: we're pushing back the launch of Eldritch Horror: Digital Edition. We know that's not what you were hoping to hear and honestly; it's not what we were hoping to write. We'd rather tell you the truth than hand you something that isn't ready though. Here's what's going on. Get ready for a behind-the-scenes peak at game development (and all the ‘not fun’™ things that plague it). The FloodWe want to be honest about something that genuinely set us back through no fault of anyone on the team: our main office flooded. Those of you who enjoy falling asleep to the weather channel (as some of us do too), probably heard a great deal about the record breaking storm that hit the east coast of the United States. That same storm was no more merciful on our main workspace. It caused significant water damage and knocked most of us out for longer than we could have anticipated. That might not get the point across though. When we say ‘significant water damage’, we mean ‘the lab was a river you had to ford to get to the other side’. No one got dysentery, luckily. Data was rescued, the team was safe (if wet), but we lost real time. A lot of it. This was time we had set aside for final polish, QA and ‘nice to haves’. Mother Nature had her own idea on scheduling though. It's the kind of thing you can't plan for in development. We're not using it as an excuse, just as context. For those of you thinking of exploring a career in game development, this runs into the concept of slack time. This is time you specifically build in for delays so they hopefully don’t impact the ultimate release date. Unfortunately, while we did do this, sometimes what hits was beyond anything you should reasonably plan for. For instance, you could plan for the entire project to get wiped by malicious hackers at the 99% mark. You should not do that, howeve...Read full article on Community Announcements (sales)
