Take control of a bustling railway station in Steam & Steel Railway Tycoon. As you expand your network with diverse locomotives, make strategic decisions to thrive in the early access version of this simulation masterpiece.

About this game

Your railway legacy begins with a steaming locomotive. How far will you go?

Steam & Steel Railway Tycoon is a strategic management simulator where every minute counts. Build routes between forgotten workshops, expand stations across Europe’s capitals, and make real-time decisions to transform a small family business into a continental empire. Every choice leaves its mark on your margins, your reputation, and your survival.

A living map of Europe

  • Travel through seven historic metropolises —Barcelona, Lyon, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and Rotterdam— each recreated with its own challenges and demands.

  • The routes exist, but mastering them is up to you: from cheap wooden tracks to high-speed magnetic rails.

  • Dynamic weather covers entire regions with storms, fog, or frost, forcing you to reroute trains and adjust fares on the fly.

Deep management and locomotives with personality

  • Every locomotive is unique: upgrade chassis, boilers, and electric systems to define its role within your network.

  • Assign specialized staff to boost performance — engineers reduce coal consumption, mechanics prevent breakdowns, and concierges improve passenger comfort.

  • Keep your fleet in shape in dedicated workshops, or risk critical failures that can block entire routes.

  • Time never stops: the game runs in real time (with strategic pause) as buildings produce, employees get paid, and resources run out.

Build the infrastructure that sustains your empire

  • Stations: expand platforms, add boutique hotels and premium services to multiply passenger flow.

  • Workshops: organize maintenance shifts, calibrate spare parts, and avoid unexpected downtime.

  • Heavy industry: coal mines, sawmills, steelworks, and refineries keep your expansion going without relying on external markets.

  • Signaling network: towers and relays reduce idle time and enable denser routes without bottlenecks.

  • Innovation labs: unlock groundbreaking projects, from quantum engines to dynamic ticket systems.

A ruthless economy

  • Stock market: invest in six corporations with systemic behaviors. Anticipate crises, ride the boom, or ignore the market and double down on infrastructure.

  • Legendary auctions: bid for historic locomotives with unique bonuses against aggressive rivals. Will you risk your liquidity for a behemoth that burns 25% less coal?

  • International trade: sign contracts with shipyards, mining consortiums, or luxury airlines. Import resources while paying tariffs — or build your own production chain.

Events that reshape the game

  • Global modifiers change each session: government bailouts, stock crashes, subsidies, or unpredictable strikes.

  • Narrative decisions with permanent consequences: accept bribes, donate artifacts, negotiate with unions, or face mass layoffs.

  • Extreme weather events —winter storms, tourist festivals, persistent rain— reshape demand and maintenance priorities across your network.

Reputation, prestige, and progress

  • Earn reputation through punctuality, safety, and infrastructure milestones to unlock trains like the Zenith Storm, elite staff, and unique buildings such as the Celestial Observatory, Temporal Forge, and Aurora Refinery.

  • Invest in permanent innovation projects that affect your entire company and redefine your playstyle.

Daily Run, roguelike progression, and meta-game

  • Face self-contained community challenges in the Daily Run mode.

  • Discover a roguelike system of project cards, talents, and railway relics that reshapes every playthrough from the start.

  • Use prestige currency to unlock permanent upgrade trees, map variants, and mutators that alter the beginning of each new company.

  • Earn exclusive rewards and build prestige to modify the meta-game: optional rules, passive bonuses, and new scenario variants.

Extreme challenges and dynamic objectives

  • Choose between Story (tutorial mode) and Infernal, for a truly unforgiving experience.

  • Complete global goals (50 reputation, eight locomotives, 100 trips on the Zenith line) and tactical missions with unique rewards.

  • Capture temporary resource nodes before they vanish, balancing the risk of diverting trains from main routes.

Tangible rivalry

  • Competing companies share your tracks, influence demand, and force you to adjust prices and schedules.

  • Spy on their locomotives, study their configurations, and outmatch them in efficiency and comfort.

Why board Steam & Steel Railway Tycoon?

  • True depth without overload: complex systems presented with clarity and a strategic pause always available.

  • Infinite replayability: procedural maps, dynamic events, and narrative choices with real consequences.

  • A polished retrofuturistic aesthetic blending steel, steam, and industrial neon.

  • Constant updates expanding game modes, mechanics, and narrative content.

Your first locomotive is already waiting in the depot.
Passengers demand punctuality, investors want results, and the government is watching your every move.
Forge a legendary legacy—or become just another forgotten name in the history books.

🚂 Steam & Steel Railway Tycoon needs you.
Climb aboard and conquer the rails!

Patch 1.2.0 - The time freeze is fixed, plus a new interface

Sorry for the waitThis patch took far too long. The "time doesn't progress" bug was reported months ago, and I couldn't get a fix out until now. Thanks to everyone who described the issue in detail in the comments. Without those clues — especially the accounting period and the train crash — I would never have found the cause. Here it is.The game freezingFixed the main issue: when a modifier round came up, the game paused while waiting for a card selection window that was never shown. Time never resumed, and the only way out was to restart the game. That window now exists and works properly: you get three cards showing their rarity and effects, with the option to reroll for a fee.Added a safety net: if a save ends up paused on an event that cannot be resolved — for example, an old save pointing to an event that no longer exists — the game now detects it, discards the invalid event, and resumes time automatically, leaving a note in the log.The game loop no longer dies when a tick throws an error. Previously, a single internal error could stop the clock forever even though the interface continued responding.Minimising the window at high speed for an extended period no longer causes a long catch-up freeze when you return.A rendering error in one window can no longer take down the entire session.New interfaceThe map is now the centre of the game: full screen, with no page scrolling.Panels (trains, routes, infrastructure, stock market, etc.) now open as windows on top of the map. Drag them by their header, close them with Escape, the X, or by pressing their icon again. The icon bar remains accessible while a window is open.A top bar keeps your cash, reputation, resources, and time controls visible at all times, with the minimap available from a dropdown. The map legend and active events have been moved to a corner so they no longer cover your railway network.Trains and performanceTrains are now rendered at your screen's native resolution. They previously looked pixelated onc...

    Forge Your Empire of Steam

Forge Your Empire of SteamIn Steam & Steel Railway Tycoon, you’re not sitting on a golden throne. You’re in the workshop, surrounded by noise, metal, and pressure gauges. Your decisions move trains, workers, and coal. The map is a city built from iron, where each district survives on what your tracks deliver. No heroes, no prophecies—just machines, work, and an economy that never slows.Build the impossibleIndustry doesn’t wait. If a factory runs out of coal, half a production line stops. If one locomotive arrives late, another is stuck behind it. The challenge is turning a tangled mess of rails and timetables into a precise network that feels almost obsessive.Every stretch of track has purpose. Every minute matters.Master the machineryNo two locomotives are the same. You can build heavy models for dangerous routes, fast engines for urgent deliveries, or experimental prototypes that barely fit inside the workshop. Risk is part of progress—sometimes the smartest idea is also the one that might blow up.Investing in workshops, parts, and upgrades isn’t luxury. It’s survival.A real economy, hard choicesYour network moves coal, steel, tools, and fuel. Everything that travels across your rails ends up in a factory, a port, or in the hands of a rival corporation that wants you out of the market. You’ll choose between safety and speed, short routes or long ones, alliances or open war for control of resources. The city breathes through your lines.A metropolis of ironYou’ll work through districts covered in soot, bridges built above roaring chimneys, and tunnels that lead to abandoned mines. Each area has its own story—and its own way of wrecking your plans.Sometimes industrial landscapes are beautiful in their own way: steam, metal, and red light cutting through smoke.Built for players who love strategyThis isn’t about heroes jumping across trains or Hollywood explosions. The real reward is watching your network run perfectly, finding that one curve that saves two minutes, or de...

Steam & Steel: The Countdown Begins

Only Nine Days Until Steam & Steel Opens Its DoorsWe wanted to tell you, calmly and without technical jargon or patch-note language, what the adventure looks like right now. Think of this as an informal letter — a long chat to help you understand what you'll find when you start up your first locomotive.A world that changes every time you playSteam & Steel changes from one run to the next. The map decides which routes appear, which cities end up isolated, and which storms complicate your day. If you come back tomorrow, you’ll see new connections and new situations. And if you join the daily mode, then yes — everyone plays the exact same setup.Trains with characterYou start with simple locomotives, but soon you’ll unlock stranger and more powerful prototypes. Each train has a clear stat card: speed, fuel consumption, comfort… When you want to upgrade one, a panel opens showing everything you need: parts, price, installation time, and whether the machine has any issues. No surprises, no hidden costs.Routes that tell storiesThe route panel works like a station-master’s notebook. You can see which lines are overloaded, which ones are affected by bad weather, and where tourism is booming. If a route requires a lab project, you’ll get a direct warning; once you’ve completed it, the warning disappears. Routes can also be improved with hotels, station upgrades, or small aesthetic touches.Infrastructure that mattersBeyond the tracks, there’s a whole city growing with you. You can build coal mines, sawmills, refineries, labs, customs posts or power plants. Each building has its own card showing what it produces, what it needs to level up, and the bonus it gives. If you’re missing reputation, time, or electricity, you’ll get a notice — fix it, and the card becomes available again.A laboratory with clear rulesThe laboratory is where you unlock projects that shape your run. They used to be too expensive, so we rebalanced them recently. Now each project explains exactly what it do...
