About this game
Brought to you by Metahusk, this game is an educational Unreal Enigne project that is intended to help others learn how to develop games. If you're curious, give it a try. The game is more bug-free than a lot of commercial releases. But if you're expecting a similar experience to what you get from a paid game, this game may not be for you.
Note: This is an early release. Networking and co-op are implemented, but this release only includes the introductory level where there is no co-op gameplay outside of finding each other through coordination and having the correct items. If you are looking for a co-op game to play with friends, check back in the future. Until then, we recommend playing the game by yourself.
About the game: Cardinal Fall is a nonprofit, community-developed, story-driven, 3d side-view, single to four player multiplayer, survival-horror, co-op videogame set within an original far-future dystopian sci-fi universe.
Set in the year 2742, you play as a clone—known as an Echo—located in a research facility where catastrophic events are unfolding. In the game, players will explore a series of sprawling locations while planning a way to escape their eventual fate. Having multiple outcomes, Cardinal Fall will test the player and their friends as they navigate, learn, and survive the hostile environment they find themselves trapped within.
Shepherded by Metahusk, a US based IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Cardinal Fall is a community project that is being developed for free by volunteers. This is an entirely donation driven game. If you like this project, you can donate by purchasing our Donation DLC on Steam or by visiting our website at more information.
The game is currently in production. This is an early release that features the introductory level. If you are a developer and would like to contribute, we would love to hear from you.
This side-scroller version is an early prototype of a larger first-person edition we plan to produce in the future. In the first-person release of the title, the focus will be placed on the immersion, horror, and atmospheric elements of the game.

Small Patch v0.1.5.9
Bugs Fixed: After upgrading to Unreal 5, we rolled back to TAA anti-aliasing instead of TSA for better performance on older hardware. On cards like a GT 1030, the framerate dropps by ~55% with TSA ant-aliasing. With TAA we are only down ~9%. If we were to turn off SSR, the performance loss would only have been 2% but we decided to keep SSR on for this release.Read full article on Community Announcements (admin)Patch NotesOfficial
Small Patch v0.1.5.8
Bugs Fixed: After upgrading the game to Unreal Engine 5, some Windows 10 machines experienced the last frame of the videos "sticking" onto the screen. We know Windows 10 is End of Life for most players, but we still want to support older systems. In the spirit of supporting older hardware, we migrated from WMF to Electra for video playback to resolve the issue.Read full article on Community Announcements (admin)AnnouncementsOfficial
Upgraded To Unreal Engine 5
In this releases, we upgraded the engine to Unreal 5. We also added cross play support between Steam and Epic and modified the game play after receiving feedback from players. Unreal 5 required us to change a lot under the hood, like our key rebinding and server browsing system. It also brought new bugs that we had to fix. Overall, though, the upgrade process went smoothly. We would have preferred to stay on Unreal 4, but since this is a community project and the vast majority of developers want to learn to work with the newer engine, we decided to make the move.We know Unreal 5 has been receiving some bad press over the past few years, especially in regards to performance. We noticed this too, but for our project it’s not as severe on newer video cards when using settings similar to what was typical for Unreal 4.Upgrading from Unreal Engine 4.26 to 5.1 resulted in a ~9% performance loss on low end hardware like the nVidia GT 1030. We still want to target older hardware and will look into ways to increase performance. To greatly increase the performance of the engine, we disabled the resource heavy features like Lumen and Nanite. One of the other ways we maintained close to Unreal 4 levels of performance was by sticking with TAA anti-aliasing instead of TSA. On cards like the GT 1030, the framerate dropped by 55% using TSA anti-aliasing. If we wanted to improve performance even further, we could have disabled SSR for this release and the loss would have only been 2%. But we decide to keep it enabled otherwise some of our reflections would not look right. We hope you enjoy the changes. And as always, please let us know if you have any issues or find any bugs in the game.New Features:Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.Added cross play support between Steam and Epic.Modified the introductory game play.Bug Fixes:- As reported by a player, we fixed an audio replication issues on clients where the falloff with distance wasn’t working and clients could hear what the hosting player ...Read full article on Community Announcements (admin)Patch NotesOfficial
We released our first patch that addresses a playability issue and small bugs.
Less than 96 hours since launch, we released our first patch to address some of the concerns players left as feedback. This patch also fixes a few minor bugs. Here are the changes below.Feature: We implemented a new feature after a player left feedback implying that their encounter with security might be too difficult for some players. To mitigate this issue, we implemented a new mechanic that aids players while also provides more insight into Velma’s personality. If you are forced to “spawn a new Echo” because your last Echo died, Velma now activates a circuit breaker that she grounded into the metal floor. This electrocutes both the player, as a punishment, and kills any security on that floor. As a result, this action gives the player a chance to make it to the ladder before the next wave of security arrives without having to kill them.Feature: At the start of the game, Velma now tells the player that they are not the only Echo. Hopefully this helps when players think co-op isn’t working when they don’t immediately see their friend's Echo in the game. There are multiple levels in Reclamation, but some players may not find this easy to determine by looking at the floor numbers scattered around the level design.Feature: The menu’s control rebinding page now gives the player a popup when they try to bind a key that was already used. The potential conflicting bind isn’t set in order to avoid the issue where one key activates two actions.Fix: We fixed an issue where pressing the button to restore the default controls fails to set two buttons.Fix: We addressed an issue where, if the player reverses course on the ladder following their first confrontation with security, the music is stopped and restarted onto a random music track after it already happened once on the other side of the ladder.Fix: We fixed an issue where one of the data terminals didn’t allow the player to go back and click on the first dialogue that was presented. In order to get that screen back, previ...Read full article on Community Announcements (admin)AnnouncementsOfficial
