About this game
What happens when sound becomes the only way to understand the world?
Coloratura is a narrative experience designed to be played without relying on sight, using 3D audio as the player’s primary way of navigating, solving puzzles and connecting with the environment.
Put your headphones on, close your eyes, and let yourself enjoy this experience!

Follow the journey of Alex, a talented young musician who is about to achieve her dream of composing a song, only for that dream to shatter after an accident leaves her blind.
As Alex, you will revisit memories, emotions, and everyday spaces, encountering a diverse cast of characters who will help you find new ways to connect with music and the world around you. Her journey culminates in a final concert, where you will unveil a masterpiece shaped by the very puzzles you solved along the way.

Coloratura allows you to freely explore the scenarios in 3D. You’ll orient yourself through 3D audio, detecting distances, directions and resonances. We’ve created a sound landscape (or “soundscape) so the player can explore and complete objectives without relying on visual guides. Actually, we encourage you to play with your eyes closed or blindfolded!

Since you don’t have the typical visual objective guides available, we've created a system that allows Alex to detect objects at a distance through a sound radar. The memory mechanic allows those objects, once found, to remain saved so the player can easily return to them. It's like an objective and guide system from a traditional video game, but based exclusively on sound.

Probably by this point you’ve already realized the pattern in Coloratura - indeed, the puzzles are based on sound too! To solve these challenges, you'll need to tune your ear. And as you solve them, you'll be weaving together the game's soundtrack, which evolves with your decisions and Alex's progress.

Echoes of Light - The story of Coloratura
Hey, Steam! Yeah, it’s us again…We have a nice topic today though, don’t leave! It will be shorter than usual because we don’t want to spoil the whole thing for you, but we’ll be talking a bit about the story behind Coloratura. The Main CharacterYou’ll be following the everyday life of Alex, a young talented musician who is about to fulfill her biggest dream - composing a whole song by herself, and recording a single. Exciting times for her! However, that dream gets derailed when she loses her sight in an accident. In Coloratura you’ll follow her journey through grief and growth as she gets used to her new circumstances, and manages to overcome them and achieve her dream despite them. The StructureThe lore is woven directly into the game’s progression. You’ll experience several days with Alex, starting by the tutorial where you’ll learn about the accident and accompany Alex through the first stages of coming to terms with what happened and adapting to her new situation.Pssst… we have a demo available right now with this content, we recommend giving it a try! From then on… well, as we said earlier we’re not going to spoil the whole thing for you, but after that initial day with Alex you’ll go with her through different phases of grief, acceptance of her situation and growth - conflicts with people close to her, putting too much pressure on herself, learning to live in a different way… ultimately, finding her path again and fulfilling her dream of composing and recording the single. And by the way, the song will be composed by yourself through different musical puzzles you’ll have to solve along the way. You’ll be a part of Alex’s story. Does this sound interesting? Well, as we said before, there’s a demo available to try on our Steam page! You can also add Coloratura to your wishlist so you’re up to date with news, updates and these articles we’re publishing talking more about the project.Want to chat directly with us? Behind the Scenes: A look into Coloratura's Development Philosophy
Hey again, Steam! We’re back with more insights about how our team at Nakama Game Studio develops games, more specifically Coloratura. Ready? Here we go!For us, but with usFrom the moment we started working on Coloratura, there was something very clear for us - we didn’t want to design and develop this game from a purely theoretical way, and we didn’t want to fall into a paternalistic tone. It was important to make the experience as realistic as possible, to really portrait the experience of a person adapting to blindness. To achieve that, we collaborated directly and constantly with blind people during the development process, especially with Sergio Vera from Videociegos. We talked about his everyday experience, and he tested and iterated constantly through the development process. This not only allowed us to make sure the journey Alex, our protagonist, goes through was believable and felt realistic - it also helped us understand and learn which game mechanics worked and which traditional aids or adaptations that usually are implemented in games designed for blind people actually ruined immersion.Unlearning Conventional DesignThe majority of videogames we play are heavily reliant on graphics and visual aids. This obviously wouldn’t work for a game like Coloratura, so one of the challenges the team faced was shedding those traditional, sight based design biases where the visuals certify the actions. Instead, we had to learn new techniques, get creative and focus on solving spatial and tension mechanics through interactive, haptic sound design.Extreme Iterative ValidationWe decided that a development process based on producing the whole game and testing it at the end wouldn’t work well for Coloratura. Instead, we took the approach of working on sprints with very narrow objectives, validating each technical and sound interface system step by step through testing of our own, with our collaborators we mentioned earlier, and also through playtests at public videogame event...Read full article on Community Announcements (Melbatla)AnnouncementsOfficial
Coloratura - A Journey Through Sound
*Taps microphone*Uh… hello? Can you hear us?Hi, Steam! We are Nakama Game Studio, a small indie studio based in Spain. In the coming months our game Coloratura will finally launch after a few years of work, so we thought it’d be a good moment to check in with you and let you know a bit more about the game, starting with… well, the very beginning of the project. So sit back, get a cool drink (always stay hydrated!) and enjoy the read! How was Coloratura born? The project evolved from Museful, a prototype created in a Game Jam that successfully validated a fundamental technical premise: it was possible to navigate a 3D environment in a game using only positional audio, without any visual aid.For us, Coloratura’s main goal was to move away from the restrictive concept of an “audio guide” or audio game, creating a fully fledged interactive 3D video game where the core gameplay is based on orientation through positional audio. A game that can be played equally by both sighted and blind players. What were our main objectives? There were several pillars that shaped the creation of the game. In the coming weeks we will release more articles going deeper into gameplay design, lore, etc, but for now we’ll talk a bit about the main objectives.Inclusive GameplayWe wanted to make a game that could allow people with and without visual impairment to play in equal terms. Maybe even enjoy the game together! We actually encourage sighted players to experience the game blindfolded or with their eyes closed, so they can increase their sensory immersion and enjoy the experience to its full potential.Stimulating the ImaginationWe created what we call a “sound landscape” (or “soundscape” for short) with the goal of allowing players to subjectively and personally draw the shape and dimensions of the virtual space in their own mind. In other words, use sound as a brush to draw the landscape in your mind - your brain is the graphic card here! Spatial Exploration and MasteryColoratura is designed t...Read full article on Community Announcements (Melbatla)
