About this game
Welcome to the BADASS BRIGADE!
Throw a dude at another dude! Badass Brigade is a light-hearted 2D action game where you shoot, punch, grab, and throw your foes. Take on missions where you can explore the world and uncover a wide variety of weapons and gear for new ways to fight.
You are a Brig (short for Brigadier). You, along with everyone else around here, are stuck on planet Idronis after it was placed under Planetary Lockdown several hundred years ago for mysterious reasons. Unable to continue with interstellar acts of piracy, tomfoolery, and other shenanigans, boredom and disillusionment have set in. Looking for a change of pace, you abandoned your post to try and make a living by selling...deep fried bug legs.
Clearly, this venture does not last long. New intel suggests that it may be possible to lift the Lockdown, and perhaps a way uncover the reason it was started in the first place...
Aside from the Badass Brigade, the other unlucky sons caught up in this mess are:
The Galactic Police Department (GPD). They’re the primary governing body over most of the galaxy. Yes, the police department also does the governing. The GPD is staffed entirely with machine life, all controlled by a central AI.
The Interstellar Armada, a roaming space fleet of techno-crustaceans led by Admiral Jer’cayce (or as everyone else calls him, Jerkface). He is the selfproclaimed arch nemesis of the Badass Brigade due to various reasons that we can’t remember.
Lately, the native ever-glistening and poppable Boombugs of planet Idronis have begun to exhibit some mildly upsetting behavior, such as performing blood sacrifices and unholy rituals. It’s probably not worth investigating.

Take on various metroidvania-style missions filled with enemies, puzzles, and secrets.
Grab stuff, throw stuff. Grab a key, throw it at a door. Grab a table, throw it at a dude. Grab a dude, throw him at another dude.
Tons of guns! A weapon for every occasion.
All traversal abilities available from the get go. No unlocking a new skill in mission 10 to get a health upgrade in level 2. Instead, use that big brain of yours to puzzle things out.
Boss (and mini-boss) fights, of course.
Scan stuff for questionably useful information.
Scan important things to fill out the Codex for that juicy lore.

Release date!
It's been a (relatively) long road.Badass Brigade is the first game I've ever made. The only relevant experience I had going in was modding for Starcraft 2. IYKYK. That doesn't teach you how to code but it does reveal many fundamentals like how variables work, how graphics, code, and audio all hook up to each other, etc. So going in I didn't know how to code, draw, animate, or make sounds.I was driven by Starcraft 2's editor sucking. Not to say it actually sucks, but my project files were getting so large that the editor would take 2 solid minutes to save and would crash all the time. It drove me insane. Every crash made me ask myself why I'm pouring all this time and energy into this and not something "real," i.e. not a mod. I was almost finished making a Pikmin analogue when I finally gave up.I officially opened a tutorial for Gamemaker on August 28, 2024. The actual Badass Brigade project file was made a few days later. Here's me after doing a basic "how to move in a platformer" tutorial. Here's after a few days of figuring out parallax backgrounds and how to do pixel art. I already had a mental image of how the game should look going in so this stuff didn't get used, but it was necessary practice.Long story short, repeat that process for everything that goes into a game. Need something -> google it -> read tutorial -> try -> it sucks -> google it again -> try again -> it works ok -> sit on it a while -> make some improvements -> hey this is actually good! Not all is fine and dandy of course. I haven't even gotten to the many bad decisions I've made. If you hang around game development circles, you'll hear the same thing from everyone when it comes to starting out: Your first game will fail and don't make a platformer.coughSo anyway, release date is November 13, 2026! Mark your calendar for this once in a lifetime event!Read full article on Community Announcements (Marauder Squad)Patch NotesOfficial
Update 1.5
Lots of behind the scenes work has been done, most of which is not in the demo (sorry), but that doesn't mean nothing has changed.Unlockable weapons found in missions 1 and 2 have been largely changed. These weapons were created early in development and aren't as interesting as some of the later ones. I figured the beginning of the game could use some more excitement. The removed weapons will be available elsewhere eventually. Added a few that are on the critical path so you can still get new ones without having to hunt for them. If you already have the removed weapons unlocked, you will still be able to use them.M1: 'Bomb' removed, moved to home base storeM1: 'GPD Colossus Cannon' removed, currently unavailable.M1: Added 'The Slimening.' shotgun that fires 5 bouncy projectiles.M1: Added 'Pocket Drones.' Deploys mini GPD drones that automatically fire at enemies.M1: Added 'Whirlygig Rifle.' Fires a projectile that spins in a circle shortly after launch.M1: Added 'High Output Engine.' Exchanges max energy for greater energy regeneration. Changes booster color to blue.M1: Added 'Traffic Jam'. Fires a traffic cone.M1: Added 'Hydraulic Pile Smasher.' Launches enemies in front of you.M2: Armada Katana removed, currently unavailable.M2: Kel'Raver Arm Blaster removed, currently unavailable.M2: Giant Crab Claw removed, currently unavailable.M2: Added 'Bass Booster.' Short ranged soundwave gun.M2: Added ''Yamato' Colossal Energy Breaker.' Swings a giant energy sword that launches a slashwave forward.M2: Added 'Armada Splitshot.' Burst fire rifle (There was a surprising lack of "normal" weapons in the beginning so I made this)M2: Added 'Radium Seeker Launcher.' Low cost single missile launcher. Some players kept forgetting that Scan Mode was a thing, so I added some Scan-lock doors in missions 1 and 2. They simple require a scan to open. Misc changes:Tutorial: Changed the arena at the end to fit in one screen like other arenas.M1: Changed the arena in the Neon Loft to fit in o...Read full article on Community Announcements (Marauder Squad)AnnouncementsOfficial

It's playtest time!
Hello friends!Badass Brigade is officially open for playtesting. The actual game content available is the beginning of the game without any alterations. Here's exactly what that means:Tutorial + first 3 missions. A mission should take around 1 hour+ to complete at my best estimate. For context, personally it takes me 30 minutes to clear a mission while getting every secret and knowing exactly where to go and what to do while absolutely crushing every enemy encounter.1 Training side mission. Currently has no music, pls ignore the silence. There will be many side missions in the full release.Lots of weapons and gear to use. Note that some of the weapons and gear shown in the menu are unobtainable in the playtest. After completing mission 3, there will be a post-mission cutscene as usual setting up the next mission, but you will not be able to access it.I'm looking for feedback on everything! First and foremost, the game might crash at times. As of me writing this I'm fairly certain that there aren't any game breaking bugs in the content available, but I've been wrong before. But anyway, here's a list of things I would like feedback on:Combat difficultyTraversal difficulty. This includes things like making tricky jumps or just figuring out where to go.Puzzle frequency/difficultyDialogue/cutscene frequency. Too much chatter or not enough?Known issues:Some player animations will fail to play or rapidly "jitter" in specific circumstances. This includes dying while performing certain actions or wall jumping while mashing keys.Very rarely an enemy will clip into a wall, which causes them to instantly teleport somewhere nearby. I'm not sure any of you will notice this one in the first place.Rarely some combination of punching + getting staggered or knocked back will cause the player to have no weapon equipped. Punching again should restore the weapon. In the event that the game does crash, please either copy/paste the error message or take a screenshot of it and post it in eit...Read full article on Community Announcements (Marauder Squad)
