About this game

THIS BATTLE IS ALL IN THE MIND

The best competive experience comes from understanding all of the moving parts of the competition. A dangerous or smart play is nothing much to someone who doesnt understand its underlying risk and reward.

"XorO" is a 1vs1 fighting-inspired puzzle game that puts focus on the mind games by getting rid of mechanical, input-based complexity while also having a set of simple, easy to understand rules derived from familiar ideas of tic-tac-toe and rock-paper-scissors. Every play has counterplay, every advantage is earned.

The game achieves perfect balance as both sides are completely mirrored in their potential, leaving only sound strategy and big reads to affect the outcome of a match.

Although the game is turn-based, there is no first-turn advantage. Players take turns simultaneously, and after ending their turn, watch the moves they took interact with each other. This turn-based game flow also removes the impact of poor connection on a player's performance.

FEATURES

  • Simple, easy to understand rules let players quickly get to thinking about outplaying the opponent

  • Perfect balance where both players are completely mirrored in their potential

  • Online 1vs1 lobbies to challenge friends or strangers

  • Optional settings from board size to extra mechanics allow you to customize the game's rules to your preference

  • Arcade Mode where you can test your skill against increasingly difficult bots

    Update - v.1.1.1

CHANGELOGAdded following localizations:Español (Spanish)Français (French)简体中文 (Chinese Simplified)繁體中文 (Chinese Traditional)日本語 (Japanese)한국어 (Korean)Türkçe (Turkish)These localizations were made using MTL (Machine Translation). I cross-referenced between English and Russian languages to try and minimize the number of bizarre translations but some quirks like tenses, conjugations and word gender will inevitably feel out of place. Some words may make sense but not usually be used that way. If you notice any translation errors that annoy you then feel free to report them.I used to write steam update notices like this one in both English and Russian but going forward they will only be written in English.FIXESYou no longer can change the custom color palette's alpha value and make UI elements transparent. The game will now also force custom and guest palettes to be fully opaque in case someone tries to change them externally.KNOWN BUGSChanging localization does not resize the menu text, leaving it cut-off. Reloading the game after saving settings fixes it. I couldn’t find a straightforward solution to this so, for now, it stays that way.

    Update - v.1.1.0

CHANGELOGAdded color palettes to the game - all sprites that had the "orange & tangerine" and "blue & purple" colors are now recolorable. Icons, UI elements, fighters - all will change according to the selected color palette settings. You can choose from one of the three base presets or adjust and use your own custom preset. In multiplayer lobbies players will see the opponent's chosen color palette, this can be disabled with the "guest palettes" toggle in the settings. The default color palette has been adjusted for better contrast. As a result of experimenting with sprite settings, the game's visuals overall had improved.\\\\\\\\\

    Update - v.1.0.2

CHANGELOGAdded a new singleplayer mode where you can set up rules same as in a multiplayer lobby and choose one of the Arcade mode bots as the opponent. The bots were designed for "3x3 Simple" format, as such they will not utilize "storage" and "crush" mechanics. I found them to be quite weak on 5x5 and 7x7 boards but good enough to try things out and and experiment outside of multiplayer.Added a ready check in the multiplayer lobby.

    XorO release - v.1.0.0

Thank you for reading this, I hope you'll have fun with my game and see the positives in its simplicity.PLANSSome simple QoL features to expect:Mid-game pause menuArcade mode level select OR retry on defeat buttonFighters display toggleSingleplayer custom match"Ready" state for lobbies instead of any player deciding to start the matchSome not-as-simple features that would be great to add:Ranked matchmaking - problem is a matchmaking mode would require some specific ruleset everyone accepts as the standard, adding more rulesets would split the queues/mmr or add an element of randomness if one is selected at random. I have not made up my mind about it and think more player feedback is required for this decision.Color palettes - I dont like the visibility on the "O" side, the shades of blue and purple chosen ended up contrasting poorly, but going through all the sprites in the game would already be a hassle so might as well rework things to allow for color palette swaps.Bigger lobbies and spectator mode - self-explanatory, lobbies where more than two players can join and challenge others to a 1v1 match, as well as the ability to watch whats happening in those matches.BUGSI'm aware of a few network bugs that I have not considered testing for prior to release and will focus on fixing first cause its kinda embarassing. Mainly with accepting Steam invites outside the main menus, for example while already in a lobby or active match. Sometimes this leaves a "ghost" lobby you cant connect to. Rebooting the game seemed to help.If you encounter any bugs, please report them on the Steam community page.\\\\\\\\\
