About this game

Hand-me-downs is a roguelike deck builder where you play against your own old hands.

Your opponents don't have their own deck, so they borrow your cards!
After every face-off, you switch cards with your opponent, and you must face off against the very hand you just played the next time you encounter them.

Each opponent brings a unique twist to the table, so be careful which cards you let them have.

Whether it's the The Bouncer restricting which cards you can play, or The Painter changing the suits after the switch, your opponents will make sure to complicate your plans.

And remember: their cards are your cards.

Each suit has its own flavor, and each rank its unique character.

Throughout the game you'll get familiar with the no-nonsense Clubs, the fortunate Coins, the jolly Cups and the ruthless Swords.

Face cards and aces have powerful effects that can shut down your opponent, or score a ridiculous amount of points.

Acquire powerful trinkets to manipulate your deck and keep up with opponent scaling.

Whether by increasing your score, suppressing your opponents, or manipulating your deck, trinkets play a crucial role in keeping up with your opponents.

Use totally-not-cursed tickets to corrupt your cards and gain an edge over your opponents.

Why do your opponents let you use these obviously illegal cards against them?
Don't worry about it!
Holding the corrupted cards makes you feel funny?
Do not worry about it.

Unlock and beat all decks on all tables.

Each deck provides unique benefits and each table brings new challenges to the... table.

Achieve victory with all combinations to earn the prestige "Hander of Downs" title.

(Not a legally recognized title. Yet. Working on it.)

Sit back, relax, bob your head to the beat, and watch the beautiful chaos unfold!

State of The Game and Incoming Price Rise

State of the gameHey downers! We released Hand-me-downs in early access in May, and we've continued working on it ever since! After 9 updates, some smaller, some bigger, we feel the game has matured enough to warrant this announcement. So for those of you who haven't been keeping up with the updates, here are the highlights of the changes since release:CORRUPTION AND LEVELS OVERHAULCorrupted face cards and aces now have custom effects to reflect their expected power level.Corrupted cards no longer have a random trigger, now all of them invoke their effect on discard.Numbered corrupted cards don't scale their effect with card upgrades, but face cards and aces do.Instead of levels, cards can now either be upgraded, downgraded, or normal.Upgrades and downgrades are now temporary by default.FEATURESYour runs now get automatically saved as you play.Cloud saves - this includes unlocked decks and tables as well as any ongoing runs. The corners of the field now dynamically change color depending on whether the player wins with the current hand. (green if the player will win, red if the player will lose)Added stats overview. This is a very early prototype of what should one day become a more comprehensive overview including more than just basic player stats.CONTENT3 new opponents.2 new decks.24 new trinkets.USER INTERFACE AND EXPERIENCE:Main menu overhaulMost notably: The deck selection screen now shows the cards included in the deck laid out on the table and able to be inspected, along with any starting trinkets. Dynamic panelThe score section of the sidebar is now a dynamic section that serves multiple purposes.During a face-off it displays the score. When hovering cards, trinkets, or certain UI elements it displays additional information if there is any. (Mouse scroll wheel can be used to scroll the text if necessary.)Otherwise displays encounter information and/or flavor text. Card packs, ticket packs, and trinket packs now use different pack art.You can now see a preview o...

    Patch Notes - v0.9.0

Hey Downers! We've been busy with other life stuff so this update took a bit longer than usual and is a bit smaller.FEATURESHovering your draw pile now shows you a preview of card values in your hand and on the field.BALANCEBuffed Butter Knife:From: At start of face-off, evenly distributes all values of your cards among them. (rounds up)To: At start of face-off, doubles value of your leftmost card. Evenly distributes the total value of your cards among them.Pillow reworked to make more sense with the recent corruption overhaul:From: Corrupting a card with a ticket of sloth upgrades it.To: Corrupting a card with a ticket of sloth permanently upgrades it.VISUALSRound, encounter, discard, and opponent info labels pulse when updated.Dominance suit icons pulse when shuffled.Gold amount now pulses green/red when the amount changes.Player and opponent score now pulse when score is added. Pulsing is stronger the higher the score.BUG FIXES"Cards in hand" now include cards you've put on the field for the purposes of the Dice trinket and some corrupted card effects.Fixed draw pile not moving with the rest of the UI when peeking inactive tables.Fixed game sometimes crashing during tutorial when peeking inactive tables while in the Shopkeeper encounter.WHAT'S NEXT?We have one more major gameplay mechanic in our plans that we will begin implementing now.Our priority right now is implementing the mentioned mechanic as we feel it's the missing piece that ties the whole game together. We might push an update or two in the meantime, but more likely is just hotfixes when necessary until we have the mechanic ready for a major update.~Toni & Margo

    Patch Notes - v0.8.0

Hey Downers! We lied. We said we might sprinkle in some balance changes. Instead, we completely reworked corrupted cards.GENERAL CORRUPTION CHANGESCorrupted cards no longer have a random trigger, now all of them invoke their effect on discard. This should bring some consistency and eliminate the possibility of practically useless corrupted cards. The general dilemma behind all corrupted cards from now on should be: "Do I keep this card in my hand and use it for points, or discard it for it's effect?"Corrupted face cards and aces now have custom effects to reflect their expected power level.Anyone who played at least a couple of runs probably experienced the disappointment of corrupting a strong card and getting some garbage in return. No more!Numbered corrupted cards don't scale their effect with card upgrades, but face cards and aces do.that said...CARD LEVEL REWORKInstead of levels, cards can now either be upgraded, downgraded, or normal. We used to have 5 levels of cards, but we wouldn't blame you if you didn't realize that. There weren't many viable ways to upgrade your cards, and the level progression wasn't interesting, so we decided to reduce the bloat in favor of more exciting upgrades.Upgrades and downgrades are now temporary by default. All upgrades reset at end of encounter, so don't be scared to play your upgraded cards or downgrade your opponent's cards.WRATHNo longer provide discards, now serve the purpose of destroying cards.LUSTCopies created by lust are now fading - they get destroyed whenever they enter your draw pile.GREEDNo longer gilded. Must discard to gain gold.ENVYCan now be upgraded.GLUTTONY, PRIDENo major identity changes, but the general corruption changes still apply.SLOTHSloth is unchanged.Sloth was by far the strongest corruption, and likely still is. A nerf is likely incoming, but for the time being, we're leaving it as is to see how it compares to other new corruptions.TRINKETSSome trinkets needed reworking after the corruption changes. ...

    Patch Notes - hotfix

Hey Downers! We dropped the ball with our last update. Due to a major oversight on our part new players were not able to start a run on the tutorial deck, effectively locking them out of the game completely. THIS IS NOW FIXED. We will make sure to be way more diligent in our testing going forward. Thank you for understanding. ~Toni & Margo

    Patch Notes - v0.7.0

Hey Downers! This update brings some menu work, a few balance changes, and a new feature!USER INTERFACEThe main menu layout has been reworked.FEATURESAdded stats overviewThis is a very early prototype of what should one day become a more comprehensive overview including more than just basic player stats. In the meantime, you can see how many runs you've played, your highest score, and a few other stats.WARNING: we'll do what we can to preserve player stats as we expand this system, but there are no guarantees.VISUALSMost of the placeholder visuals from the settings menu have been replaced.MUSICOld music has been replaced with a new looping track. The reason for this are some licensing issues that would come up when gameplay footage was uploaded on YouTube. This is a temporary fix while we work on creating our very own custom music!(More observant among you will notice this was already changed before this latest version, but we didn't make a post about it.)PERFORMANCENo more stuttering while going through different decks in the deck selection menu.BALANCEBlue deck changedBefore: "Start with Blue Envelope and Membership Card"Now: "7s replaced with 4s. Start with Blue Envelope and Four Leaf Clover"Four Leaf Clover changedBefore: "Your normal 4s have a special effect: On trigger: 1 in 4 chance to give 40 gold."Now: "Your normal 4s have a special effect: On score and trigger: 1 in 4 chance to give 40 gold."Blue deck was overly dependent on RnG. If you didn't find a way to generate gold in the first shop, the run was basically doomed.Replacing the Membership Card with the Four Leaf Clover provides a guaranteed alternate source of gold.WHAT'S NEXT?We will continue working on improving the sound effects and visuals, as well as expanding the stats overview feature.Balance changes will also be sprinkled in if deemed necessary.~Toni & Margo
