About this game

Featured in Science: “Can a video game mimic the highs and lows of life as a scientist?”

Science used to be your purpose, but now it is your prison.

Trapped in a distorted version of your laboratory, shaped by the quiet, unseen struggles of scientific research, you must find your way out. Battle with lab-inspired tools and science-themed companions in light 2D combat! As in science, the way forward isn’t always a choice.

The Scientist Battles is a personal exploration of the realities of scientific research: the excitement of discovery, the frustration of failure, and the persistence required to keep moving forward.

Features:

  • A short narrative journey with an emotional, introspective tone

  • 2D combat using lab equipment and science-inspired companions

  • Rooted in the lived experience of someone who's been through the ups and downs of research

Alright. Deep breaths. Let’s find the way out of here. I’ve got loads of experiments waiting for me back in the real world.

Researcher's log

I started this game while unemployed, after moving to a new country, and decided to finish it after returning to the lab. It’s inspired by the quieter, often unspoken stories behind scientific research. I hope the game resonates with you, even just a little bit, whether you're in the lab, playing for the story, or just finding your way forward.

A much belated milestone: The Scientist Battles featured in Science

It's been a while, but I've finally found the time to share a quick update. At the end of last year, The Scientist Battles was featured in Science in the Experimental Error column by Adam Ruben. If you're interested, you can read the article here: https://www.science.org/content/article/can-video-game-mimic-highs-and-lows-life-scientistWhen I started making this game while I was out of a job, I wanted to explore something personal - the human side of research and the quieter struggles that often go unseen.Science is often defined by its breakthroughs and discoveries, but the journey behind it is also filled with uncertainty, failed experiments, setbacks, and moments where you have to find the motivation to keep going. The Scientist Battles was my attempt to turn some of those experiences from myself and others, while of course exaggerating them through the lens of a game, into a small narrative adventure combining my experiences as a researcher with my love for games.Seeing this project featured in Science was an incredibly meaningful moment. I never expected something I created in my spare time reach the scientific community in this way.Thank you to everyone who has played and supported the game since its launch. This game started as a personal experiment, and I'm grateful that it has became something that connected with people beyond what I imagined.Thank you for playing.- Shaun
