About this game

Tuoni is a turn-based RPG that borrows aesthetics and elements from old-school roguelikes.
It is an atmospheric blend of exploration, simple but tactical combat, and extensive buildcrafting. Take your weapon, grab your armor, and wander towards the northern wilderness on your mission to reach Tuoni, the land of the dead.
JOURNEY TO FINNISH MYTHOLOGY
Explore a rich fantasy-world inspired by Finnish legends and the untamed northern wilderness. Tuoni offers a unique blend of old-school RPG-design and atmospheric worldbuilding, where ancient spirits, forgotten creatures, and silent but all-seeing forests accompany your journey through the unknown.
Mountains, forests, and marshes stretch endlessly, each region telling its own story through inhabitants and environment. Gnomes skitter in woods, trolls lurk in dark caves, and spirits drift between trees and water. Who knows, you might even cross paths with Näkki by a dark pond or glimpse the ancient wrath of Iki-Turso rising from the depths.

EXPLORE THE UNTAMED WILDS
Open World: The North is vast, wild, and slow to reveal its secrets. Trek across howling fens, mossy cliffs, and ancient forests, on your journey to reach land of the dead, Tuoni. There are no set paths, only the ones you carve for yourself.
Procedural Generation: Wilderness shifts with every journey. Twisting cave systems, forgotten trails, and roaming beasts are reborn with each venture. Key locations stay unchanged, and offer memorable characters and deep lore to uncover.
Finnish Mythology: Step into a world shaped by ancient Finnish myth. From deathly marshes to spirit-haunted woods, every corner of the wild holds presence of forgotten gods, various spirits of the nature and large amount of creatures from small to gigantic. Is that a stone or a troll?
LEARN TO SURVIVE
Turn-based Combat: Fights are tactical and unforgiving, and rely on a tick-based system. Magic can empower weapons just as easily as it tears through foes. Do you grab an axe, explore powers of fire or become a feared shaman?
Freely Explore: Tuoni lets you choose your path. Explore where you will, shape your character as you see fit, and decide who lives or dies. But tread carefully, as the land does not forget.
BUILD YOUR LEGACY
Character Development: There are no hard-set classes, only choices. Shape your hero from a wide array of archetypes like Frostborn, Stone Guardian or Battle Shaman (and many, many others), while forging a build that stands the test of time!
Upgrade Weapons: As you journey deeper into the wild, you'll uncover ways to reshape and enhance your gear, to make your journey longer and stronger.
Enemy Variety: Wolves, bears, and other beasts roam the land, some still natural, others hollowed and warped by unknown forces. In the depths of troll-caves, increasingly deadlier and older trolls live, each layer revealing something more ancient and grim. What can you find down there?
AN ADVENTURE AND A CHALLENGE
Blending RPG's and Roguelikes, Tuoni offers two game-modes:
Adventure Mode: Progress is saved on checkpoints, and each death starts from most recent one. Beware however, world is still dangerous and poses a great deal of challenge.
Traditional Mode: Truly challenge yourself with a world that kills you for good. No more checkpoints and every death starts all the way from beginning.

Tuoni Devlog #4 - New Systems & Metroidvainia Elements
Hi all! Lots of water has flown through the River of Tuoni since I last updated you! It changes now, as I have loads of new stuff to introduce. First and foremost, thank you all for your never-ending help! Many of you have already playtested the initial versions of the game, and your feedback has guided the development to more fruitful and interesting directions than I could have guessed. It helped me even turn one bug into a whole new (and super fun!) feature, but more on that later. More and deeper systemsGames live and breathe from their systems. Tuoni's goal has always been to have meaningful and interlocking systems that feed into one another. Recently, I have spent a lot of time honing existing ones and adding new, complementary ones. Here's what's been cooking:Crafting System The game's demo will feature various raw materials for weapons and armor. Here, for example, are materials for Weapons: Wood, Bone, Iron, Steel, Crystal, and Obsidian. From the wilderness, players can find various materials. Combining 4 of them yields a weapon.Recipes are both dynamic and unique. For example, 4 Iron chunks yields and Iron Sword. Combining 3 Iron materials with one upper-tier material (like obsidian below) produces an item of dynamic material, this time Ashen Iron, providing better stats and added Shadow Damage. (Player has filled all four slots with 3 Iron materials and 1 Obsidian material)On top of these dynamic recipes, the game will feature hidden, unique recipes. The player does not need to explicitly learn them, as simply knowing the correct set of items is enough to craft anything. Many of these items will have more unique properties and even abilities, and will require something other than just normal materials to complete. Hints on what these recipes contain can be found in the wilderness with enough exploration. Upgrade SystemAs the items we create and find in the wilderness can be quite fitting to our builds, it would be a shame to lose their relevance too fast....Read full article on Community Announcements (Old Dog)Patch NotesOfficial
Tuoni Devlog #3 - Ranged Combat and Demo-update
Hey all! Dropping an update on development after a very useful playtest, which quite largely defined and verified the direction the game should take. Numbers & Playtest Let's start with some awesome news and numbers: Tuoni has surpassed 4.5k wishlists before any public demo, which is a huge number! Additionally, Playtests have been a huge success. Discord and feedback forms were filled with useful and creative feedback, and I am happy to say that almost every one of them was so spot-on that they ended up directly in my development backlog. On top of that, playtesters seemed to really enjoy the game, which is awesome to see, and numbers show that also: Average Playtime for Playtest-build was 2 hours 1 minute, which is a very good number! So, thank you all for your support, whether it's simply telling your friends about this game, pressing the wishlist button, or even coming to a Discord and contributing to the game's development with your feedback and comments. Ranged CombatInitially, when I started development, I set some constraints for myself to manage scope and design. One of them was that combat would consist only of melee combat & spellcasting. That means, arrows could come in the form of casting a spell that shoots an arrow, but no auto-attack, archery, bows, or wands However, Tuoni focuses heavily on exploration, combat, and crafting different builds. With this (and a couple of playtest comments) in mind, I decided to prototype Archery, and it fit very well into the game. Ranged combat opened up many builds and offered interesting trade-offs for players: Some enemies are easier to kill without taking a hit, but a charging moose or leaping predators are suddenly twice as scary as before. So, in addition to blades, axes, hammers, and staves, I decided to add two new weapon types: Bows & Wands.Bows and Wands are essentially quite similar, but geared towards physical & magical playstyles. Naturally, with a vast selection of skills, one can change even that: For e...Read full article on Community Announcements (Old Dog)
