About this game

Talaka is a fast-paced action roguelite where you tear through corrupted legends and twisted folklore creatures across stunning Brazilian hand-painted landscapes. Wield god-blessed weapons, master dynamic runs, and fight alongside the Orishas to restore a mythology on the edge of erasure.

A unique adventure with Dead Cells-like combat, Hades-like run and storytelling structure and thrilling Boss fights.

Every run offers new challenges and god-blessed weapons across 150+ weapon and skill combinations. Dodge, parry, and restore your way through corrupted spirits and twisted beasts in fluid, fast-paced combat, culminating in epic miniboss and Boss encounters that will push everything you've learned to the limit. No two runs ever the same.

Every biome in Talaka is a living painting, from the arid Sertão and the vast Pantanal wetlands to the streets of São Paulo and the dreamlike depths of the Dark Orun. Enemies don't bleed. They burst into ink. By the end of each battle, the screen is your own canvas.

The legends that once guarded these lands are being erased from memory, and as they fade, they've lost themselves to a mysterious corruption. Hunt them down, master their patterns, and fight to restore what the world is forgetting.

Every creature you face in Talaka is rooted in real Brazilian folklore, fauna, and flora. The Mapinguari, the Velho do Saco, the Labatut, the Bathroom Blonde: legends that have haunted Brazilian imagination for centuries, now hunting you in every run. Uncover their origins in Talaka's in-game bestiary, where every enemy has a story worth reading.

Each run makes you stronger. Between runs, spend your earned Ashe to unlock permanent upgrades, boosting your health, dodge, healing, and more. Seek the guidance of Iemanjá, Ogum, Oba, and Eshu, each offering their own blessings to shape your journey.

Talaka analyses your gameplay and suggests the ideal difficulty for your skill level. If you want full control, accessibility options are always available: infinite health, one-hit kills, and more.

Uncover Secrets: Every room hides secrets waiting to be found. Explore beyond the obvious and uncover hidden areas that reward curiosity with rare items and untold stories.

Kill Streak: Defeating enemies increases your damage output, but healing resets your streak. Push your limits or play it safe; the choice is yours every fight.

Brush of Kumbu: Some enemies appear shrouded in the mysterious corruption, absorbing almost all damage dealt to them. A single stroke of the Kumbu brush shatters the shield, exposing them fully. Upgrade and master the brush alongside your weapons to craft the ultimate build.

Hello, everyone! We’ve reached the end of Talaka’s Beta Test period, and we want to thank you with all our hearts for playing and sending feedback throughout this process. What’s going to happen: 🔑 Starting NOW, it will no longer be possible to claim new keys. 🔐 The Steam beta keys will be revoked by August 3rd and will stop working from that moment on. 🎮 This means access to the test build will be closed, but we’ll give an extra period, where you’ll have this weekend to play and fill out the feedback form. However, if you’re interested in continuing to chat about TALAKA, or follow its development in real-time, or get priority access to news, join the PotatoKid Discord. It's where we'll post the freshest updates about the game. It’s been a bit quiet there because we were busy with the Closed Beta development, and we focused on Acclaim’s server during this period, but we’re going to shake things up over there! So stay tuned.Once again, thank you so much for your support and patience during this phase! Your feedback made all the difference, and we’ll keep working hard to deliver the best possible version of Talaka. ✨Cheers!

    Mid-Beta Update

Hi there folks! Potato Kid team here, bringing you a freshly baked new Talaka build just out of the oven! This build contains dozens of fixes, changes and improvements based on the first week of Beta testing. Thank you so much to our dear beta testers for making this possible! Here is the change log of what’s in Build 0.8.4.26:1.ImprovementsCrouch & Crouchstrike!!!Talaka can now crouch to stay away from some of those projectiles! And bonus: she can perform a crouch strike to repel pesky folks getting too close, like that little fiery snake!Getting Hit & FlowChanged Talaka’s reaction, physics, and consequences when she takes Body Damage from enemies (collisions with the enemy’s body). Now she won’t be stopped on her tracks when colliding with enemies, but will still take damage. This is designed to keep the game flow faster and offer more freedom of movement overall in combat. Please note Talaka will still be knocked back and interrupted by enemy attacks.2.FixesCombat & Gameplay ImprovementsFixed a stunlock exploit in Miniboss "Cabeça da Mula" (Head of the Headless Mule).Fixed a bug in the room that unlocks the Kumbu brush that prevented glitch walls from disabling.Added a larger and clearer low health warning to improve urgency to heal. Exploration & World NavigationFixed physics to prevent Talaka from "hugging" walls across the game.Fixed a few rooms where Talaka could fall into the Void.Fixed a bug where Talaka appeared to be flying after being resurrected.Changed spoils physics (coins, Sankofas, etc.) to prevent them from falling out of bounds.Created more forgiving colliders to interact with the Orishas.Fixed NPC interaction bugs in the Orum. UI, Audio & Quality of LifeFixed the pause menu locking up when underneath the store UI.Fixed a bug that caused the Options screen to freeze.Lowered the volume of certain sound effects, specifically Glitch Shield-related ones.Fixed various minor menu bugs. Localization & TextFixed consistency regarding "Exu/Eshu" naming.Fix...

8 Fun Facts based on 5 Days of Talaka Beta data

Hi there folks! Paulo here with a new type of post, hope you enjoy it! Before we opened up the game for a closed beta test with 200+ participants, we at Potato Kid decided this would be a great opportunity to get some telemetry data and learn more about what’s going on in the runs from an objective, data-centric perspective, as well as gathering the subjective feedback we are collecting on Discord and with the survey. If you have never heard of telemetry, no sweat: “Telemetry is the automated collection and transmission of data and measurements from distributed or remote sources to a central system”, says IBM here. We designed and implemented lots of fun little triggers and can now share data based on 5 days of gameplay by our dear testers (from 16/july to 20/july)! Now on to the fun part: the fun facts! 4 brave players already reached the end of the Beta! On 11 occasions Talaka made it to the final boss of this beta build, and 4 times she emerged victorious. Congratulations to those who made it!!! Death Toll: 604 Talaka has died 604 times during these days. Poor girl. But she’s resilient and she kept fighting! Rooms cleared: 5785 Players have beaten a total of 5785 rooms, meaning the average rooms cleared per run is 9. This includes rooms like healing, shops and narrative, so the real combat rooms are likely a bit lower than that! Miniboss Spotlight: Head of the Mule That pesky head! It has killed players 69 times… which means over 10% of player kills! But she has been defeated 378 times too, so take that!  Eshu is rich! Ashe collected: 1968 Oh, what a good gig he’s running! Eshu collected all of that for opening up portals in Orun to take Talaka to the Aiê. Dendê Tree has been beaten 56 times That’s how many players cleared the first act of the game! Though she killed 67 players, meaning she’s got a solid 1.19 Kill/death ratio!Bugs reported: 25 (and counting!) The community has already flagged 25 bugs/inconsistencies/issues with the game. This is great, we love to...

Hey everyone, Potato Kid here again! \Today's the day! Our first two biomes are live and ready to be broken by all of you. If you already said hi in the Beta Discord, you'll get your key today! Haven't requested access yet? Head to the #talaka-beta-request channel on our Discord and drop a message; we'll hook you up! → \Quick heads-up: the controller is your best friend right now for the smoothest experience. Keyboard support just landed too, but it's fresh out of the oven and still experimental, so expect some quirks if you go that route. And please share everything you go through, good and bad, with us! Every run matters. Every ridiculous death, every "how was I supposed to know that would kill me," every fight that made you go "okay THAT was awesome" — tell us about it in the beta channel. We're reading every word! And yeah, this is an unfinished game. Rough edges, weird balance, the occasional bug crashing the party. That's the whole point of a Closed Beta, so dive in and help us find them! Talaka launches on Steam in early 2027 — wishlist it now so you're ready to dive in on day one. See you in our watercolor world!==
