    Adventure Mode is now OUT!

Greetings,If you've been reading these, hopefully you know what this is so I'll get to the point:Adventure Mode Update is now live! Here's what's in it, in 3 quick bullet pointsADVENTURE MODE: A new way to play the game - streamlined single player experience with asynchronous multiplayer -Travel across the land, beating 40 areas in a linear map to reach the Champion. -Beat the Champion to have a chance to fight the Player Champion! Beat the Player Champion to take their place as the final boss! META PROGRESSION: A persistent player level that you increase by doing stuff -Unlock more character skins and name frames by levelling up! AUTODOX CHECKMARKS RETURN: Pretty self explanatory, no? Just look at this screenshotAnd here's what's in it, in dozens of long bullet points:More about Adventure:Beating the game will unlock a higher difficulty level. Beating that will-- oh come on, it's just ascension system from Slay the Spire, do I need to explain it?Gyms are optional, but every 10 nodes, you'll fight a ghost of another player. Player ghosts are slightly nerfed to prevent an ambush from a level 20 2-star Ladybuff from someone who got really lucky. You get healed before and after these fightsAreas 36-38 are a boss rush against the Pretty Good Three. There is actually 6 possible bosses there, but 3 are chosen at random. Then another PvP area, then finally, the mysterious Champion. Then, if you beat that, the Player Champion! Beating the NPC Champion is enough for the run to count as a winYou only have 2 lives in this mode, but you only lose 1 per battle loseThe run is saved as you go so you can quit and return to it. This feature isn't implemented in BR yet because there are a few more things to consider thereGameplay:Release is now available to do pre-battleWonder Trade and Dump rewards improved. Dump now also can't roll the fight outcome when you're at 1 lifeRefusing a capture now grants EXP equal to turn number, not static 3 per Automon anymoreAlpha Meishowl, Tongo and ...

    Saturday Evening Update #5

I legitimately forgot that it's Saturday and I'm meant to write an update today. If that doesn't speak of my integrity as a developer, I don't know what doesThis week, I spent time on two major features. First, I added some meta progression. So instead of "You win", it's "You win. +100 EXP!!! LEVEL UP!!! NEW SKIN UNLOCKED!!! BUY A BATTLE PASS!!!". That last one was a joke, at least until EA buys me out. Or Ubisoft. Or ANYONE really, they all do it now.Note that there aren't that many things to add as rewards as of now, but the floodgate is open to add more stuff easily and put it at higher levels. I haven't done this yet, but the player level itself will be displayed wherever you see a player, synchronously or not. Skins are only visual for now, but they'll have adventure abilities later, just don't want to stall the update to implement them.Second, Adventure mode will have 10 difficulty levels that you unlock one by one. Just beating it once is hard enough so this should keep you busy for like, 3 days. Note that you don't need to beat the player champion to unlock these, just the regular old NPC Champion.Other cool stuff:NPC characters now have different sounds when they speakAdventure runs can be returned to after quitting, even if the game or the server crashesWHEN???I don't think it'll be fully ready next week, so assume 2 weeks for now. There's still quite a few bugs and inconsistencies to work on, just a bunch of little things. And once that's done, I want to do a lot of testing of this, since there's so much in this update and I wouldn't really be myself if I didn't leave a game-crashing bug somewhere.

    Saturday Morning Update #4

Greetings and salutations,I'm doing an any% speedrun of releasing a major update and I'm glad to say, it's not far off from being ready. Adventure mode is completely functional and balanced enough to be difficult but not hellish. There's even a thing in the main menu to show who the current Player Champion is!Autodox checkmarks return! You only get limited information on Automons until you see and/or catch them. There will be new achievements associated with this tooGym leaders all have a face now, and some idiotic one-liners! I'm hoping they will make you exhale through your nose a bit faster than usual.Other things worth mentioning but not worth a screenshot:I added extra tutorials to prevent players from doing major mistakes due to not understanding some rules or missing a previous piece of tutorial. Among those is: going to a high difficulty area too early, starting a fight without a full team when you have some available Automons, capturing a 4th duplicate that won't upgradeYou can now reset the tutorial from main menu settingsChanged Alpha variants of Tongo, Meishowl and FrenmonOk but when??I still want to do the following things, then we're ready for take-off:Backup/save system - since Adventure mode is strictly single player, it's absolutely a must have to be able to recover mid-run if something crashes or just need to go to the bathroom really badAdditional difficulty levels for Adventure, up to 10Some indication that a player is the current Player Champion outside of adventure mode - some shiny crown or something when you run into them in other modesSome more persistent progression - Autodox is a good start, but I could do more already, maybe some simple player exp/leveling that unlocks the ONE skin that exists at some point. It's not much, but it sets up the framework for a reward system to expand onAnd of course, play both modes a lot from all directions to ensure stability and that I didn't break anything in BR (I bet I did. A lot)So I don't think it'll...

    Saturday Morning Update #3

Ey,So I was away for a few days and didn't have much time to work on the game, but I did manage to squeeze in a small patch that fixes some tutorial sequencing - I only noticed recently that some UI elements were available before the tutorial was meant to reveal them. Are you excited yet? Ready to vote for Automon Arena as Game of the Year?Anyway, in the time that I did have to work on stuff, I made some decisions about Adventure mode and what needs to be in the update that comes with it:1 life is not good when there are unpredictable player ghosts, 2 lives (but you only ever lose 1) seems to be the sweet spotAdventure mode will be assumed to be the default mode, with the tutorial leading there, and tutorial tooltips rewritten to refer to the rules of Adventure. In BR mode, the tutorial will only show up to mention major rule changes like losing more than 1 life per fight, and the ability to surrenderThere will be an ascension system in Adventure, but it's a bit tricky due to player ghosts being a thing. All difficulty modifiers will be things that can't possibly benefit youThough I plan a bigger meta progression update later down the line, this one will start with an Autodox checklist, just like in OG Automon. You'll get checkmarks for Seen, Caught, Upgraded and Won (and a secret fifth one)I need to implement a game saving/backup system for Adventure so that will be used for BR as well, to prevent game or server crashes from halting matchesMight have character abilities in Adventure too, like in Automon 1Also, for a bit of visual stimulation - I had a player skin in the works that I thought I'll finish just to include it in the updateAnd, I am working on adding different characters for each of the possible gym types, and Pretty Good Three members. Some are just the same joke from Automon 1 again, some are new. Most aren't done yet because like, how do I make a Wind guy funny. What's funny about Wind? See you next week when maybe I have something cooler to show than...

    Saturday Morning Update #2

Hello you sick nuts,I was prepared to say that this week, the word "update" means "A progress report" and not "A change in the files" but yesterday I happened to see a stream where the game would refuse to move past the naming screen. And today I found out that this happens to every first launch since last week. Every single one. I guess the mystery of the high refund rate is solved.Sincere apologies for this failure on my part. I will spend more time playing the updates with all sorts of save states before releasing them going forward. If you have refunded the game because of this, I'll be more than happy to throw a key your way, just reach out to me with a screenshot of the refund request. I might not get to it until next week, but I'll get to itSo what did you update? There's a been a few minor patches throughout the week, addressing the following:Enabled achievementsFixed a crash that would happen if a party bag was clicked during the Grinder animationFixed naming screen not proceeding to the tutorialPrevented the occasional crash that would happen when retrieving an enemy's spriteThat's it? I'm gonna play Minecraft insteadNo no, there's more. There are bigger things I'm working on that surprisingly take more than a week to develop. But I can show early screenshots already!Introducing Adventure mode! This is like Automon 1, but instead of going up, you go right! Truly worthy of a sequelSome notes about this mode:Gyms, events, alphas and NPCs from regular mode are all here, although with Events restricted to the ones that make sense - I'm not letting you take the Airport from area 5 to the final boss! Gyms are notably optional, you can go for them only if you think you can beat them and need the badge or the extra EXPThe mandatory encounter every 8 areas is now a ghost player! That's right, we're going asynchronous! Ghost players act like regular NPCs - as in, they will still have the brain to rearrange their team to match yours so there's still uncertainty about ...
