[DEV-BLOG #1] Let’s talk about Lola’s Familiars!
Hello everyone! Curious to know how Lola’s Familiars came to life? In this first Dev Blog, we’re taking you behind the scenes to discover the origins of the project and how it evolved from its original vision into the game we’re developing today. Lola’s Familiars had already been growing for several years thanks to its original creator and artist, Hongga. For around five years, he developed its visual identity, characters, illustrations, animations, and many of the ideas that became the foundation of the project, so let's let him speak! From lockdown sketches to a bigger vision Hongga: The idea started during COVID, when I was stuck at home with almost nothing to do and felt like I was going a little crazy. Around that time, a friend recommended that I start sharing my artwork on social media. Fortunately, many people liked it, and I often received questions asking whether I was making a game. To be honest, I didn’t have any serious plans at first. I simply began drawing and posting small game concepts every week. One day, I watched some gameplay from Skullgirls and was amazed by how expressive and interesting the characters and animations were. That was the moment I seriously thought, “Maybe I should actually make a game.” That’s how the idea began. Why Lola and the Familiars?Hongga: Ever since I was young, I’ve loved the idea of summoning creatures and fighting alongside them. I also really liked the contrast of a small, cute character being protected by much larger and more dangerous characters. There wasn’t one specific inspiration behind Lola and the Familiars. I simply wanted to draw a small, cute character protected by four dangerous monsters, each with a different specialized strength. From there, I gradually matched each role with a monster concept and explored the ideas through many small sketches. Those concepts and sketches eventually developed into the current designs of Lola and her Familiars. Down below you can find a pic of me at work!
