Explore The Expanse as a struggling mercenary trying to keep his crew intact. Your decisions shape the narrative in this third-person Action RPG from Owlcat Games.
About this game

By the 24th century, humanity has conquered the cosmos. However, life has remained anything but easy. In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a story-driven sci-fi Action RPG, you play as a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose brief shore leave on the asteroid Eros spirals out of control. Trapped in a deadly lockdown and drawn into a solar system-wide conspiracy far beyond your control, you’ll have to adapt, survive, taking command of the most advanced ship in the whole of the solar system.
Create and customize your own captain — Earther, Martian, or Belter — and lead a crew of highly-skilled specialists as you face off against escalating threats, political pressure, and a relentless enemy that will stop at nothing to see you dead. In a solar system held together by fragile alliances, every decision leaves its mark.

Your companions are more than just mission assets — they are people with their own scars and loyalties. Some chase redemption. Others hide their truths. Over time, your relationships will flourish or deteriorate depending on the choices you make and how you choose to lead. The ship becomes your home — a place where trust is earned, not given.

Fight in third-person utilizing cover-focused gunplay and abilities. Two companions will accompany you into the field while others will support from a distance: disabling systems or drawing the enemies’ attention. You will issue real-time commands and have to adapt quickly to survive the manifold threats the system will throw at you.

Visit iconic locations like Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna. Walk through ruined habitats and political strongholds mired in unease and tension. Talk to the locals. Uncover secrets. Use your skills to influence what happens next. The system looks different from every planet and from every asteroid. Some are falling apart. Others just hide it better. You may even come across a familiar face or voice that reminds you of just how small the system really is.

The Choices You Make — and the Ones That Make You
Oye kapetang! When an RPG presents you with a choice, do you look for the “right” answer? The one that saves the most people, earns the best reward, or keeps every companion happy? In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, the consequences are not always that simple. A decision can determine the fate of an entire station. A piece of advice can gradually change who a young member of your crew becomes. And some choices may only reveal their true cost much later.Today, we want to show how your decisions can change the world around you — and the captain at the center of it all. OriginsWe have already talked about how your origin shapes your past, connections, and opportunities. But where you come from does not decide where you stand. A Belter can support Earth, a Martian can turn against Mars, and an Earther can fight for the Belt. Your origin gives you a place in this world. Your choices determine what you do with it. You Made the Choice. But You Haven’t Seen the Consequences. Players who joined the Beta have already faced one of the game’s earliest dilemmas on Pinkwater 4. Protogen mercenaries have followed you back to the station, putting everyone’s lives at risk. You can convince the station’s personnel to fight back — or ask them to stand down while you find another way out. What Beta players have not seen is just how far that decision ripples.Fighting... makes it easier for you... but the station gets destroyed.Avoiding the fight... allows the station and its personnel to avoid casualties…An organized defense gives you valuable support during the escape, but it also escalates the attack. Asking the station to stand down leaves you to face a much harder route out, but may prevent the conflict from igniting. Neither decision ends when you leave Pinkwater 4.Later, you may meet the families of station personnel and see for yourself how your one decision has affected them. The consequences can even reach the people behind the unauthorized raid — especially if your actions allowed t...Read full article on Community Announcements (galagraphia)AnnouncementsOfficial
Weapons, Gadgets, and Player Freedom
Oye, kapetang! In our previous dev blog, we talked about how your origin shapes your captain's journey through The Expanse: Osiris Reborn and mechanically defines where you find yourself starting. But where you begin doesn’t define how you have to play. What if character creation didn’t lock you into an RPG class?Instead of choosing a fixed role, you develop your captain across four skill trees, but the weapons and gadgets you equip and upgrade ultimately define how you fight.Choose Your PlaystyleAt the start of the game, you'll pick a specialization that sets your captain's initial skills and gear. For example, a cyber warfare specialist (formerly a hacker in the Beta) starts the game with decent gadget expertise, and their playstyle leans toward using abilities more than firearms. A firearms specialist (formerly an officer) starts with better shooting and leadership skills, relying both on their own aim and on issuing orders to companions in combat.Specializations don't restrict your progression or lock you into a particular role. You can begin as a cyber warfare specialist, invest in weapon skills as you level up, and gradually turn your captain into a hybrid of a cyber warfare and firearms specialist. All four combat skill trees — Marksmanship, Gadgets, Survivalist, and Leader — remain open, so you are free to combine them and develop your captain in the direction that suits you.The marksmanship skill tree focuses on your mastery of various weapons and unlocks bonuses to critical damage, accuracy, and other combat modifiers. The gadgets skill tree focuses on making your gadget-related abilities more powerful, increasing damage and duration, reducing the cooldown of abilities, etc.The survivalist skills, as the name suggests, ensure your survival in combat by increasing your health, armor, armor regeneration capabilities, as well as providing unique bonuses that make you more lethal to your enemies while you are exposed or engage in melee. The leader skill tree re...Read full article on Community Announcements (galagraphia)AnnouncementsOfficial
Introducing Origins — More Than Just a Background.
Oye kapetang! How do you usually create a character in an RPG? Do you just pick a class, min-max the stats, and then jump right in? Or do you take the time to figure out exactly who they were before the game even started? In any case, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’s origins will give you something to experiment with. During character creation, you will choose between three distinct origins: Earther, Martian, or Belter. Each of these origins offers unique bonuses to your exploration skills, starting gear, unique armor look, and affects you and your twin’s physical appearance. But the best part is how origins can alter your character’s journey throughout the game. Today, we’d like to talk about the latter in more detail.BackstoryThe Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a fast-paced, action-heavy game that throws you into the thick of battle right after character creation. But it’s only later that the game will offer you opportunities to reconstruct your character’s past through conversations with your twin, J, and other characters. That’s where you, as a player, will be able to consider what led you to where you are now and how it might affect your present and future. At certain moments, other characters will even acknowledge your past choices and react to them in turn. We think this creates some really interesting opportunities for role-play and self-expression without slowing down the pace of the game as a whole.Friend or FoeIn the world of The Expanse, where you come from will affect how the denizens of the solar system look at you, and how the major factions, the UNN, MCRN, and OPA, will react to your presence. During the events of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, Mars gets accused of destroying an ice hauler, the Canterbury, which had been transporting ice to Ceres. The populace of Ceres, left without water, will not be happy to see inners, especially Martians. Meanwhile, tensions between Earth and Mars are rapidly reaching their precipice, requiring only the faintest of prodding to...Read full article on Community Announcements (galagraphia)
