MADHOUSE

Paul Hubans · Published by Paul Hubans · Official site ↗

Content notice: MADHOUSE features frequent, stylized violence and gore in a lo-fi pixel art style with chibi horror characters. Players engage in bloody combat against zombies and other playable characters in a four-player versus mode, with pixelated blood splatter effects, and encounter dark cinematic moments, such as the main character’s wife being killed in the opening cutscene. Despite the cute presentation, the game includes mature themes: strong language (e.g., occasional use of ‘fuck’), depictions of tobacco use (a teenage NPC smokes and requests cigarettes in an optional side quest), which references to underage smoking, a topic that may be sensitive for some players. There are no depictions of sexual acts, sexual assault, drug abuse, alcohol, or self-harm.

    MARCH MADNESS: MORE VS CONTENT!

Inferna Joins the Versus Roster! Use her CHARM ability to take control of your opponents, forcing them to attack allies, walking them into traps, or burning up their ammo! Her melee attack is a whip that drains stamina with her passive ability, WEAR OUT. She's definitely a lot of fun to play with, so I hope you'll give her a shot! Jump Into the Junkyard! In addition to Inferna, there's a new stage for VS mode as well: The Junkyard! This is the most dangerous level yet, with flaming pools of oil, explosive barrels, exposed wires, and a crusher that you can control to smash your opponents with. It pairs perfectly with Inferna, as there are many opportunities for self-destruction here. Check it out! Ongoing Development I am continuing development of the Story Campaign alongside finishing up the roster in VS Mode. Ideally, I'd like to finish the remaining 3 characters over the next couple months, but I also need to focus on releasing the next chapter of the story for release sometime mid-year. I'm very excited for the next story update, because it's going to be a big one with a lot of new content and revelations. Stay tuned!

    Clyde

Hello MADHOUSE community! I'm still working on the next chapter update for the Story campaign, with a planned release in late May 2026. In the meantime, I plan to stick to this schedule of releasing content for Versus each month until that mode is complete, also coincident with late May 2026. This month's update introduces a new character, Clyde, an eye guy from another dimension and the last of his kind. His special ability, Beam, can be used to fire rapid shots or it can be charged into a powerful, one-shot-kills death beam. His passive ability, All-Seeing lets him easily see hidden hazards like traps, mines, and caltrops at all times. Also introduced is a new Versus stage: Bio Zone. This dimly-lit interior level is made of flesh, bone, and blood and features difficult terrain, eyes that track your movement, and doors that chomp down! Take a look at the video to see some local 4-player Team Deathmatch with Clyde, Butch, Jack, and Mr. E duking it out in the Bio Zone. Have you played the Versus yet? If not, I am once again encouraging you to check it out, as Versus mode is the foundation of MADHOUSE. If you can't do local play on a couch with buds in real life, you can play this game with your friends via Steam Remote Play. Up to two players can share a keyboard, but if you're playing with 3 or 4 then everyone will need a gamepad. I'll work on customizing key bindings in the future and hopefully having keyboard support for 3rd and 4th players that don't have gamepads! And Story mode lovers stay tuned... we're just a few more months away from the next exciting chapter!

    Happy Holidays!

https://i.ibb.co/Kp1z3JqV/Editor-9-1.gif This month's update is on the lighter side because I've been mainly focused on building new elements for the forthcoming story, so there's a lot of finished story content that isn't playable yet. I had considered putting out smaller story updates more frequently, but realized that the best approach would be to stick with my initial plan of doing a larger, more satisfying story updates on a bi-annual schedule that I originally intended. What this means is instead of me rushing out the next dungeon with enemies, a boss, and some more story over the next month, you'll instead get twice that much with a more satisfying story beat resolution by waiting a few more months. My goal is to have the next major story update out in May 2026, coinciding with the game's Steam page and demo launch, and about half a year out from its early access release. This update will include two whole dungeons with unique mechanics, bosses, and new enemies, as well as several connecting areas, NPCs, and new story elements and cutscenes. At this point, the story aspect of the game will be approximately 50% complete and give players closure on some of the earlier story elements that were introduced in the demo and early access. Additionally, I will continue to release a new playable character in versus on a monthly schedule until the roster is complete, which should align with a complete roster that coincides with the major story update in May 2026. Players can expect new versus stages, too, on an every-other-month frequency. There may also be new weapons and game modes coming to versus during this time as well, but right now my main focus is working on building out more content for story to hit that May 2026 goal for the first arc's conclusion. That being said, I do hope you get a chance to play the versus mode if you haven't already. Now is a great time to jump in, with a roster that's 75% complete, while still leaving some room for new characters to be ...
