About this game
A modern-day narrative mystery where players explore a seemingly ordinary laptop to uncover hidden layers of conspiracy, surveillance, and stolen data. Blending investigative gameplay with branching choices and a grounded tech-thriller tone.
Uncover the secrets hidden in plain sight
When you pick up an old laptop at a local car boot sale, you’re not just getting a bargain - you’re inheriting a digital pandora's box that will put you in the sights of powerful and influential entities. What begins as idle curiosity quickly escalates into a high-stakes investigation with global implications.
Project NexOS is a modern-day mystery adventure where every click, search, and discovery pulls you deeper into a tangled web of conspiracy. Navigate a custom-built operating system designed to both conceal and reveal. Recover deleted files, decode encrypted messages, and piece together the events and stories of those who vanished trying to expose the truth.
Features:
Explore a fully interactive desktop filled with emails, documents, and hidden programs.
Solve layered puzzles that rely on observation, deduction, and real-world logic.
Uncover a dynamic story shaped by your choices, where the truth is never simple and the consequences are real.
Navigate a tech-thriller world filled with secret organisations, whistleblowers, and digital activists all with their own objectives and interests.
Experience an atmospheric journey that blurs the line between fiction and reality, with some subtle (and not so subtle) narrative branches and multiple endings.
Embrace your autonomy and forge your own journey. With no right answers, your decisions are solely yours to make.
Will you play it safe - or chase the truth, no matter the cost?

100 wishlist additions! Development is active and continues
Thank you to you all, Project NexOS has been added to 100 wishlists - considering I was excited when it hit 10, this is exciting news.Whilst I only want to post news when I hit milestones in the development of Project NexOS, I did want to take the time to thank each and every one of you who've shown interest in my game. I felt it appropriate to assure you all that development is very much active and continues. I intend on sharing more news when I hit the next milestone. There's a fine line between spamming everyone and posting news that is of note.As far as development-related news, I've been continuing to expand the story and have already implemented the first mechanics related to unravelling the mystery you'll all be diving into. Screenshots and more details will be released in time – this is something I'm proud of and want to get right.Thank you all again, the support is appreciated.Read full article on Community Announcements (William Cipher)AnnouncementsOfficial
Project NexOS Is Coming to Steam – Follow Development!
It’s been a while since my last development update over on itch.io (here), but rather than posting about every small milestone, I wanted to wait until I had something substantial to share. Since last year’s update on the StoryImporter, I’ve made major progress: the draft introduction to the story is now fully playable. This required significant refactoring of the original systems, but the result is a much more modular and expandable codebase. My main focus since then has been on the event system and the Messenger app where most of the interaction with NPCs takes place. This has included features like: A typing indicator for better immersion Simulated reading and typing speeds based on message length Smart message grouping (i.e., combining sequential messages in the same chat bubble) A reputation system unlocking dialogue based on player choices An information system that remembers player discoveries and choices Player actions outside the messenger influencing NPC responses A core design decision behind all of this is to keep the game entirely data-driven. No event logic is hardcoded: every message, response, and action is stored and managed via the database. This makes it easy to iterate on the story using Obsidian Canvas and even major narrative changes can be imported via the StoryImporter without touching the core game logic. While there’s still more work to do on this system and let’s be honest, it’ll need further additions and polish as development continues but at this moment in time I’m really happy with the current state. It’s exciting to finally have the foundation of a solid, non-linear story engine in place. Creating the store page on Steam is also a huge milestone. I fully intend to take advantage of the platform’s features, including achievements and Steam Cloud support at the very least. And finally looking ahead, one of the next big systems I’ll be tackling is accessibility. Project NexOS is inherently a text-heavy game, and that brings its own challe...Read full article on Community Announcements (William Cipher)
