Lead the King's Guard through perilous battles, unlocking upgrades and assigning badges to defend an ungrateful monarch. Navigate the challenges of turn-based strategy and survival in this unique indie game from Tales Games Studio.

About this game

Your job: Keep an ungrateful monarch alive. Your tools: 8 expendable guards, gallows humor and questionable moral standards.

Command your warriors through a downward spiral of danger and misfortune, strategically escorting shoving the king through a maze of traps, assassins, angry peasants and the occasional donkey.

Position your warriors as human shields. Use them to trigger traps. Talk them out of healthcare. Dig into their retirement funds. Spend money on gear and upgrades for your soldiers.

Turn your units into trap detection specialists or crazed butchers. Identify traitors in your ranks. Bit by bit, uncover their personal stories and clues about what happened to each of the kingdoms you visit.

Like chess, without the dice.

    New languages: 日本語, 简体中文, 한국어

Greetings 貴族 , 暗殺者 and 왕실 근위대,Fresh off our last localization update, we're back already - because apparently we hate sleep. King's Guard now also speaks Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified). Now, we won't pretend this one was easy. There were fonts. There were more fonts. There were nights spent staring at a single character wondering why it rendered as a tasteful gray rectangle. So if these localizations land well, we'll be over the moon. And if a stray glyph slips through looking slightly haunted - please tell us, before the goblins do.To celebrate, we wanted to greet all our new players properly. So, from the bottom of our hearts:吹迎 !…which we are reliably told means "welcome."谢谢 / ありがとうございます / 감사합니다Tales Game Studio

    Watch the developers play!

Greetings, traveler! We hope you're enjoying Next Fest and have already discovered a few hidden gems. We've got something special to share as well: join our developers for a live gameplay broadcast as they venture beyond the content featured in the demo and tackle some of the later levels.Assuming they can make it that far, of course...

    Localization

Six New Tongues, One Doomed KingdomGreetings, noble guards and naughty traitors,We've got two pieces of news, and both of them are good - which, frankly, is rare around here.First: King's Guard is officially part of Steam Next Fest! If you've been lurking in the corridors, getting lost on your way to the throne hall (we've all been there), now is the perfect time to step in, play the demo, and see whether you've got what it takes to outlast the competition. And by "outlast," we of course mean "push into a trap and loot the remains."Second - King's Guard now speaks your language. Or at least, several more of them. We've fully localized the demo into:SpanishFrenchItalianPolishGermanRussianSo whether you're into being outsmarted by a plant or watching the King die from sheer social anxiety, you can now experience all of it in your native tongue.(We'd like to thank our translators, who read lines like "I guess this donkey is a kind of an ass" and chose to stay on the project anyway. True heroes.)If you've been waiting for a reason to share King's Guard with friends who don't read English, the excuse has officially expired. Wishlist it, play the demo, and spread the word.Stay sharp, watch the tulips, and never trust a plant that blooms out of season.Tales Game Studio

    New Demo Release

The wait is finally over! (Somewhat)We're thrilled to introduce the long-awaited phased mechanics system — a full reimagining of how you first set foot inside King's Guard. Think of it as a replacement for the old tutorial, except one that doesn't make you feel like you failed the Royal Academy entrance exam on your very first day. If the game's mechanical depth previously felt like a wall rather than a door, this update is here to change that. Oh, and we also snuck in some roguelike elements. You know the ones. You love them. We know.On a completely unrelated note, we have been extremely busy this past sprint carefully crafting, coloring, and animating a gorgeous illustrated sprite for Arianna specifically for this post. (She is still a gorgeous 16×16 monoblack sprite in the actual game. We think she looks very fancy either way. We're proud of her.)Anyway — welcome to the new demo. Go explore, break things, and let us know what you think.

    2026 Board Game Festival News

Greetings, noble guards and naughty traitors,With the Steam Board Game Festival just around the corner, we want to take a moment to thank all the beta testers, demo players, streamers, and fellow indie developers who shared genuine and thoughtful feedback on our demo. Thanks to you, we’ve made it this far - and the number of wishlists we’ve received has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. Before we introduce our upcoming **phased mechanics system**, we’d like to invite everyone to give the current demo one last run. This new system will allow players to gradually unlock features that are currently available from the start. If you felt that the onboarding into King’s Guard’s mechanical depth was a bit too steep, this update is designed to smooth that experience. And if you were hoping for *more* sadistic traps, quantum twists, and an even deeper downward spiral into the royal sewers - don’t worry. We’ve got you covered as well.Stay tuned, and if you haven’t invited your friends to wishlist the game yet, now is the perfect time.Tales Game Studio
