Explore an interconnected world in Runeblight, an action-packed indie game set in 2026. Unleash your fury on cultists and monsters as you seek hidden paths and break the eternal curse's grip.

About this game

Runeblight is a retro-inspired FPS which takes place in a steampunk fantasy world on the brink of collapse. After having acquired an incredible power, you must take on cultists, monsters, and creatures of the abyss to free the land from an oppressive blight which threatens to destroy everything it touches.

Landing somewhere between Half-Life and Dark Souls (with a hint Thief), Runeblight features tight retro FPS gameplay, a throwback to shooters of the 90s, all within an interconnected metroidvania world.

Carve a path of your own as you fight your way through hoards of enemies, discover secrets, and become unkillable.

Vilaura is a maze of hidden paths. From sprawling cities to haunted catacombs, each passage hides something new. Your survival depends on your adaptability. Equip enchanted daggers, arcane wands, shotguns, and crossbows, each weapon shifting how you fight and survive.

  • As you explore you will find hexaltars, waypoints between the darkness. You may find yourself returning now and then to paths you've crossed before as new abilities unlock new ways to traverse in this metroidvania world.

  • In Vilaura, you can find anything from a shotgun, to a wand. A crossbow, or a grenade launcher. Just like the shooters of old, you can carry as many as you can find, giving you a variety of choices for each combat situation.

The world is woven with forgotten magic, its ancient writings buried in ruins, cities, and crypts. Runic powers harken to an age long passed, each one providing you its strength.

  • Equipping a runic power gives you a unique ability, some more powerful than others.

  • A plethora of these powers can be found throughout the game, allowing you to mix and match their abilities to your playstyle.

  • As you grow in strength, you'll be able to equip even more runic powers. You'll need them for the challenges to come.

Rusted machines continue to hum, their gears still turning even as the world crumbles away. Lost ruins and dilapidated castles still pulse with ancient magic. Vilaura has been decimated by an unrelenting plague. Powerful forces conspire to see this land fall into ruin, but with the gift of undying, you might have a chance at ending the blight once and for all. As you explore this forgotten kingdom, you'll find the remnants of a civilization in collapse, and those who still hope for its future—May the moon light thy path.

  • Explore a diverse steampunk fantasy world. A castle sits next to an industrial forge. A squalid town rests at the foot of a tower guarded by automatons. Secrets wait for you around every corner.

  • Of those still living in Vilaura, few will be your ally. Occasionally, however, you can find merchants and friends who will help you along your path. Your quest is simple, but there could be more to this story than meets the eye.

Why Early Access?

Runeblight is a fairly ambitious project given we're looking for the scope of the final game to have a variety of locations to explore, weapons to find, and bosses to fight. Early Access allows us to get content out incrementally, while also getting feedback, which will be essential in shaping the game. We plan to update the game with new stuff over the span of a couple years.

Alongside new levels, we have plenty of features we'll be adding as updates continue:

  • Controller/Steam Deck Support ADDED!

  • Cloud Saves

  • Steam Achievements

  • Arachnophobia Mode

  • Improved Journal & Compendium/Bestiary ADDED!

  • Level Respecialization

  • "Selling" Runic Powers ADDED!

  • Weapon Upgrading

  • Runic Power Variants/Alterations

  • "Activate to Use" Runic Powers

  • More NPCs, questlines, merchants, and more!

The game will be cheaper while in Early Access, and you get to help support and shape development.

The Forgotten Gods Update - Out Now

The Forgotten Gods update is now out! You can read more about what's included here. Full patch notes are below!First, a few important notes:Some content is still a bit of a work in progress. The compendium is missing proper enemy icons, some sounds are placeholder or missing, and a few music tracks are missing. The Compendium - there are no rewards for completion yet. Please don't grind filling it out.Rune Abstraction - there is no mechanic for recovering runic powers you've abstracted yet, so be careful. After updating to the new version, any save file you play on will be backed up. If you experience an issue with a save, fill out a bug report before restoring the backup.FeaturesTwo new locations are now available. The Fork of Forgotten Gods - This area can be accessed from the Traitors' Respite, although the path remains sealed when not under the moon's watch. It can also be accessed from the Catacombs. The Catacombs of Rites - This area can be accessed from the Abandoned Waterways, Iresborough, and the Fork of Forgotten Gods. Two new weapons can be acquired. The Paegen Weaver - Fires a stream of tracking crystals, which build up the "crystallized" status effect. This status effect creates a small crystal explosion. The Grenade Launcher - Heavy duty weapon that makes big explosions. The Compendium - Residing in the Fork of Forgotten Gods, a new NPC grants you access to the compendium and expanded journal. The Compendium allows you to track enemies you've killed and provides some info about them.Note: Some stuff is still a WIP, enemies don't have proper icons yet. There are no rewards for filling it out yet, so please don't spent a bunch of time grinding to get it completed!Rune Abstraction - After locating a spirit stowed away in the Catacombs, you'll be able to engage in Rune Abstraction. This allows you to exchange certain runic powers for runeglass. You will be able to reacquire these runic powers again if you change your mind, however, at a significant cost.Note: Gett...

The Forgotten Gods Update - Releasing September 2nd!

I'm excited to announce that the first major update since launch will be releasing September 2nd: the Forgotten Gods update! This update will feature two new levels, two new weapons, the compendium section of the journal, rune abstraction, controller support, a variety of new enemies, several new runic powers, various other improvements, and bug fixes. The Fork of Forgotten GodsThis new level is quite challenging, but can be accessed early on from the Traitors' Respite... if the conditions are right. The ruins of the old temples are inhabited by the pægens, who won't take kindly to your presence. The woods hold many secrets, some of which will be needed on your quest. At the edge of the forest, beyond the maze, lies Quallia's Manor and an entrance to the catacombs. Here too you can find the Silseeker, who can expand your journal and aid you in your journey. The Catacombs of RitesBelow Vilaura lie the catacombs. The blight seeps up from below, making an excellent home for every kind of horror. The key to the Clockwork Tower is sealed away here, the only means of accessing the structure which looms over Iresborough. In the deepest parts, the darkness will surely impede your journey. A light will be required if you wish to progress... but where to find one?The Pægen WeaverThis new weapon found in the Fork of Forgotten Gods will come in handy for quickly dispatching tough enemies. It quickly fires crystal bolts which track targets and build up a new "crystallized" status effect. Afflicted enemies will explode into crystal shards. The Grenade LauncherFound in the catacombs, the Grenade Launcher fires grenades which explode on contact with enemies, and bounce and roll off of surfaces, detonating after a few seconds. It's a bit slow and dangerous at point blank, but great for taking out large enemies and groups alike. The Silseeker's JournalThis new item expands your journal, letting you track stats like total number of deaths, runeglass acquired, and distance traveled. More im...
