About this game

The prologue to Deserter is a free, standalone chapter that introduces you to the bleak world of the main story.

You are John Holden, a soldier broken by endless bloodshed and lies — witness to something that can’t be unseen. With no way back, there’s only one option left: escape.

Time is short. Each night is a chance to prepare, but every misstep brings you closer to death on the front lines. Evade the night patrols, steal supplies, craft tools, and strike secret deals with fellow soldiers. Can you make it out unnoticed? Or will you vanish in someone else’s war?

Key Features:

  • A unique blend of stealth and RPG genres

  • Stealth, deception, thievery, and careful planning instead of direct combat

  • Atmospheric, detail-rich locations set on the front lines and inside a military camp

  • Multiple escape routes with distinct challenges and consequences

    📋 Directive No. 4/b

Comrades, today an important update comes into effect. In order to improve the efficiency of surveillance and control, the camera view in Deserter has been changed to an isometric perspective. From now on, every citizen is required to observe the world from above — just like in Gone Rogue. With this update, we aim to restore the atmosphere of classic stealth games, and improve both comfortable controls and spatial awareness on locations. ⚠️ Attention: After installing the update and launching the game, old save files will be deleted. If you wish to finish your playthrough on the previous version, go to your Steam Library → Game Properties → Betas → select oldprologue. Main changes:The isometric camera view has returned. The interface and controls have been reworked. Lighting and visual effects improved. By default, John now moves at a light jog; holding Shift briefly boosts his speed. The sprint is also available in stealth mode. Added Observation Mode, allowing players to look around without pausing the game. Enemy AI improved: enemies are more responsive during chases and searches. High-ranking foes are now easier to identify by the color of their name and vision cone. Tutorial hints are now more informative. Balance changes:The stun attack can now be used from any direction to make the emergency defence easier, but if performed from behind, the stun duration is doubled. The Survival skill branch is now available for unlocking. In the military camp, container and NPC inventory contents now refresh more actively each day. Many unlocked objects retain their state until the next day. Thank you to everyone helping us develop Deserter. We carefully review and analyze every report you send. Your dedication and attention to detail truly help us make the game better. Try out the new update and share your impressions — on Steam discussions, in reviews, or on our Discord server. Together, we’ll make the system flawless.

📢 Citizens, attention! Our engineers have prepared Patch #3

📢 Attention, citizens!By decree of the Party, the Prologue advances ever further. Discipline is tightened, enemies grow sharper, and John Holden’s path becomes more perilous. Here is what has been refined for your continued loyalty and vigilance: AI ChangesNPC behavior during alerts improved: they now pursue and search for John longer and more actively. Both chasing and searching now happen at running speed. Fixed a bug where NPCs sometimes failed to call allied NPCs for help. NPCs whose rank is higher than John’s by +1/+2 levels now spot him +50%/+100% faster. This applies to both normal detection and their Sixth Sense (base detection speed has been slightly slowed). NPCs now hear gunshots and the impacts of other NPCs attacks, and will react accordingly. If John gets too close, NPCs can now shove and stun him. Even neutral civilians, like doctors, may push him away. NPCs are now less precise in tracking John’s exact position and lose him faster when he hides behind cover or in bushes. Elite Soldiers can now run even in their heavy armor. With their rank 3 advantage, they are now far deadlier opponents. Fixed a bug where NPCs could react multiple times to the same disabled light.Balance ChangesJohn’s movement speed increased by 10% to balance against the more dangerous NPCs. Durability of the improvised crowbar increased from 8 to 10. Recipes for Smoky Gunpowder, Sparkling Gunpowder, and Pack of Firecrackers have been changed: scrap paper is no longer required. Pack of Firecrackers now additionally requires 6 bullets. Reworked the Eyes on the Prize ability: lock picking is now nearly instant, similar to using a Brain Boost (previously: lock picking speed +100%). Reworked the Gentle Pressure ability: noise reduction from lock picking now applies to all tools (previously: only brute-force tools). Additionally, with this ability tool durability is no longer reduced. Duration of the Forced March ability increased from 30 to 45 seconds. More scrap metal has been added a...

📢 Citizens, attention! Our engineers have prepared Patch #2

Deserter: Prologue continues to evolve under your watchful feedback and our tireless effort. Here’s what’s new:Korean language localization. Improved character voiceovers. Added a new voice for the elite soldier. New items can now be found in houses every day. NPCs react faster when they spot the protagonist: they chase or attack more aggressively and coordinate better in groups. NPCs now interact with windows: they can look and shoot through them, and even climb through to continue the chase.Fixed the problem where difficulty levels may not have applied properly - so if you found the game too hard on Easy or vice versa, make sure to give it another go! Inventory UI improvements:You can now sell all useless junk at once when starting a trade. Tool icons now display which objects they can be used to unlock. When inspecting certain consumables, you’ll see which of John’s parameters they affect (hunger, fatigue, health). Together we strengthen the cause - your feedback is the fuel of progress. Now is the perfect time to try Deserter: Prologue, share your thoughts, and maybe even leave a review.
