About this game

OBSERVE: A World That Plays Itself

Watch entire civilizations rise, war, and fall across a 3,400-region map, then shape the outcome however you like. Build the world in the editor, reach in and command it like a god, or go deep and program the AI that runs the nations. Set it loose and watch your world unfold, or take your strategies to the Arena and pit them against everyone else's.

Watch It Unfold

Observe is a world you can leave running. Nations expand, ally, betray, and collapse on their own across a seamless, world-wrapping map drawn from real geography. Sit back and watch history happen, or steer it whenever the mood strikes.

  • Endless Mode. Flip the toggle and every time a game ends, a brand-new shuffled world is generated and play continues forever. Set it running and let civilizations rise and fall while you work, watch, or relax.

  • A living map. Read the whole world at a glance through map modes for alliances, wars, and the shifting balance of power.

  • Empires rot from within. Conquest is no longer free. Overextended nations bleed stability until their own people turn: rival ideologies raise a civil war out of a country's heartland, and conquered peoples secede in wars of national liberation. Watch a continent-spanning empire come apart without a single foreign invasion.

  • The nuclear age. From 1950 onward, nations that build the industry can build the bomb. Warheads leave regions as permanent wasteland, and a cornered superpower will use them. Scenarios set before the atomic era stay conventional by default.

Scenario Editor: Build the Board

Design the worlds you watch and fight over.

  • 3,400+ regions across a detailed, seamless, world-wrapping map.

  • Alternate histories. What if Rome never fell? What if the Mongols rode again? Take full control over countries, populations, borders, technology, and starting conditions.

  • One-click Randomize. Hit the button and get a fresh, shuffled world to set loose. Instant new challenges, no setup.

  • Save your favorites. Build a library of custom civilizations and drop them into any scenario.

  • Share your worlds. Build the scenario you've always wanted to watch, then hand it to everyone else.

God Controls: Reach Into the Sim

It's your world. Reach in and meddle. God Controls let you intervene in any running simulation directly: tip a war, prop up an underdog, or unleash chaos, all through an in-game HUD. Watch a situation unfold, then change it with a click.

AI Studio: Go as Deep as You Want

Want more than a spectator's seat? You can write the minds the nations think with. Observe ships with a built-in code editor running MiniScript, a clean, readable scripting language for authoring AI doctrine: when to expand, who to trust, where to mass its armies.

  • Never written code before? A 30-lesson interactive tutorial takes you from your first line to a working war machine, in-editor, at your own pace.

  • Already a programmer? The API exposes composable primitives (full enemy intel, army allocation, front objectives, economy, stability, nuclear arsenals) and gets out of your way. The strategic ceiling is yours to find.

  • Iterate fast. Run any scenario right inside the editor, watch your script command nations live, tweak, and run again.

The Arena: Script vs. Script, Ranked

Wrote an AI you're proud of? Prove it. The Arena pits your scripts head-to-head against other players' creations in 1v1 duels and a global, properly-rated ELO ladder.

  • Spar instantly. Load a script, pick any rival on the ladder, and watch the duel play out live before your eyes.

  • Climb the ranked ladder. Matches are rated with a true round-robin system, not luck-of-the-draw ELO. Each of your named AIs earns its own place on the board.

  • Run up to 3 AIs. Field different doctrines and see which one the meta rewards.

Watch a world play itself. Shape it however you want. This is Observe.

Observe 0.8.0: THE ULTIMATE GRAND STRATEGY SANDBOX!

Hello all! Observe began with a simple rule: the world moves without you. Countries build, fight, make peace and fall apart while you watch. God Mode lets you interfere, but I kept coming back to the same question: what if you wanted to stay with one of those countries and live with the consequences of its decisions? Observe 0.8.0 is available now. It adds a built-in Great War campaign, a way to make campaigns of your own, direct country control in ordinary scenarios and a naval system that can decide whether an army ever reaches the shore. Lead a country in any scenario Open God Mode, select a country and choose Control this nation. You take its treasury, government, construction, armies and fleets into the country-control interface while the rest of the world keeps running. You can switch to another country or hand control back to the AI and return to watching. This works in ordinary Observe scenarios. You do not have to start a campaign to take control of a country, and you do not have to commit to leading it for the rest of the game. If a war on the map catches your attention, you can step into it, make your decisions and step back out. The Great War begins before the war The first built-in campaign starts on 1 January 1912. Choose Austria-Hungary, Germany, France, the Russian Empire, Britain, Italy or the Ottoman Empire. Each begins with its own position and problems, while the world around it is moving toward a crisis. The campaign begins before the First World War. Face the war in Libya, the Balkan Wars, diplomatic demands, domestic pressures and choices about mobilisation as Europe moves toward a wider conflict. A capital can fall to a different power than history expected; a country can refuse the path that led it into the war; a settlement can leave a very different map behind. Campaign events appear in their own illustrated window. Decisions show their requirements and costs before you choose. Research and laws let you decide how to raise an army, what to...

Observe 0.7.8: Save Games, Combat Rules and More God Mode Tools

Hello all! This update adds save games, reusable rule profiles, more control over combat and new ways to change the world through God Mode. Save a world and return later You can now save a running world and continue it later from the Scenario Editor. Open the new Saves tab, choose a saved world and return to the simulation. A save keeps the current date, countries, wars, active front lines, committed armies and losses. Saving waits for a safe point between turns so the world can resume without rebuilding an ongoing war from its beginning. The old Endless setting has also been divided into two clear modes. Loop starts a newly generated world when the current one ends. Endless keeps the same world running after one country remains, leaving you free to change it with God Mode. Save your preferred rules Game rules can now be saved as reusable profiles. Set up the kind of simulation you want once, save it and load the same rules into another scenario. Shape how wars are fought New combat rules let scenario creators decide how predictable, destructive or defensive wars should be. You can choose a combat style or adjust each part separately. Change how strongly stability and terrain affect fighting power.Add more or less uncertainty to battle results.Increase or reduce frontline casualties.Control the value of holding a position, building forts, gaining air supremacy and concentrating tanks. The same controls are available inside God Mode, allowing you to change the character of a war while the simulation is running. Faster front lines Front lines now use a hybrid renderer on supported hardware. The GPU draws the visible line at a stable cost, while the CPU keeps flags, tanks, labels and interaction points accurately attached to irregular borders. The new Frontline Renderer setting defaults to Automatic. It uses the GPU path on suitable hardware and falls back to CPU rendering on weak, integrated or unsupported graphics hardware. You can also force either GPU Line or CPU L...

    Join The Translation Effort!

We have moved Observe's community translation project from Crowdin to a self-hosted Weblate server. This lets us support every language our players ask us to add. German, Polish, Turkish and Ukrainian translations are already underway. French, Korean and Russian are now open for contributors too. HELP TRANSLATE OBSERVE You do not need to translate the entire game. Every translated or corrected sentence helps. If your language is missing, ask for it in the comments or join our Discord. I can add it to the project. JOIN THE OBSERVE DISCORD Thank you to everyone who has already contributed!

    Observe Needs YOU: Community Translations!

Hello all! Observe has grown considerably over the past few months and we now have a big international audience! I would like to make Observe easier to play for people who do not speak English as their first language, so I am opening a community translation project. The first translation A group of Polish players (Monika and Igilq) has already offered to begin translating the game into Polish. The first parts of the translation system are now working and translators can test their work inside the game without waiting for a new public update. Polish is the first language we started to work on. If you want your language to be listed and you would like to help translate it, leave a comment below and then join our Discord so we can communicate. I can add new languages as translators volunteer. How you can help Translations are managed through Crowdin. You do not need to translate the entire game or make a long-term commitment. Translating a page or a few sentences would go a long way. Join the Observe translation project on Crowdin You can also join the Observe Discord to speak with other translators, report problems and ask what a sentence means inside the game. Join the Observe Discord What translators should know Please write natural text that players in your language will understand. A clear translation is more important than copying the English sentence word for word. Some words such as Country, Region, Front and God Mode have specific meanings in Observe. Ask if the intended meaning is unclear.Do not translate text inside braces, such as {country}, {amount} or {version}. The game replaces these parts automatically. Contributor credits Community translators will be credited inside the game. Each translation can include a Translation Team credit written by the people who worked on it. Observe has players from all over the world and I would love for more of them to be able to understand the game without fighting through English. Thank you to the Polish team for gettin...

Observe 0.7.6: Map Composer and New Map Modes

Hello all! This update makes the map more useful by letting you choose both what it shows and how that information is presented. Build your own map viewThe new Map Composer combines three separate choices: a base map, optional overlays and country labels. You can begin with the political, bloc, culture, terrain, supply, technology, ideology, alliance or nuclear map. You can also compare countries by stability, treasury, military strength or food supply. Flags, occupation, population, unrest and original ownership can then be placed over the selected map. Labels can independently show country names, soldiers, stability, treasury, food, population or nothing at all. This means you are no longer limited to one fixed map mode at a time. A military map can display flags and soldier counts, while a terrain map can also show occupied land and population. Clearer occupation Occupied regions now use a visible pattern. This makes conquered but unintegrated land easier to distinguish without relying on two similar colours. Better building information Building tooltips have been rewritten to match the current simulation. Farms show how many people they feed, military buildings show their current daily production and Markets show their current income. The values account for relevant technology, stability, terrain, building level and occupation. Tooltips also explain upkeep, construction, research buildings, nuclear buildings, forts and Political Offices. Display and editor improvements Legacy Map Graphics can be enabled in Settings for players who prefer the previous graphics.Map Editor tools now have keyboard shortcuts.Empty country drafts no longer inflate country counts in the Scenario Editor. Thank you for playing Observe!
