Why We Brought Laser Guy Back After Five Years
Hello everyone! Today we'd like to share the story behind Laser Guy origins.Back in 2020, our team joined the GMTK Game Jam, one of the largest game jams in the world. Laser Guy was created in just 48 hours and submitted a mere 7 seconds before the jam ended. The theme that year was "Out of Control," and our idea was simple: what if the player had to constantly deal with a laser that was impossible to fully control? The original concept was actually pitched as a 3D game, but we quickly ditched the approach because we lacked the experience to make that perspective work in such a short timeframe. Ultimately, we delivered a prototype that is very similar to what we’re now developing; an office-worker named Harold navigating an alien workplace during an uncontrollable crisis while trying not to harm his coworkers. To our surprise, the game received an incredible response from players and earned a spot in GMTK's Top Marks selection. What started as a small weekend experiment suddenly felt like it had real potential. But game development rarely follows a straight path.Over the following years, our team became deeply involved in other projects, including Bloodless, which eventually won Best Brazilian Game at BIG Festival 2023. Laser Guy remained on the shelf while we grew as developers and learned from larger productions. After deciding Laser Guy would be our next game, this gave us the chance to rethink some aspects of the original prototype; like polishing its visuals and especially rewriting its story, that now reflect something much closer to our own experiences. What began as a game about an alien workplace has evolved into a more personal story inspired by the creative struggles and triumphs of game development itself. Harold is now an anxious game developer trying to navigate the many challenges that come with bringing a game to life. Over the coming months, we'll be sharing more development updates, behind-the-scenes insights, playable demos and plenty of progress ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Point N' Sheep)
