About this game

Oikizo is a city-building game. Start by placing your first building and a few citizens, then make your city prosper. The strength of Oikizo lies in the ability to manage a city cooperatively with your friends. Currently in early access, the game offers a randomly generated map of considerable size and a "classic" civilization. We have initially focused on the basic mechanics. In this version, you can develop your city alone or with friends, without any imposed objectives for now. We have implemented a famine defeat condition that will be your priority in this version.

We are aware of the absence of certain aspects and assure you that we have many ideas for this game. However, we need player feedback to ensure the base is stable before adding new features.

This game has a unique feature: the ability to play the same city with your friends. You might think that managing ten buildings with two players isn't very exciting. We understand, but our vision is to create much more than a simple town with a few buildings. Indeed, we have chosen to implement a relatively large map size so that your small village can grow into much more than a city. We want players to be able to build and develop enough for the city to transform into a small country. This is where co-management makes the most sense.

Whereas you might typically manage a beautiful city with a hundred or a few hundred inhabitants, imagine being in charge of thousands. Managing their demands, continuing to grow your city while defending against attacks, involves a significant number of tasks. More than playing a city next to your friends who help you if they feel like it, you play the same city, and they will have as much interest as you in defending the territory that is yours.

For your information, here are the elements we will add later:

  • New Civilizations: Each will have its specificities (magical, steampunk, etc.) with unique resources, buildings, or technologies.

  • Population Satisfaction: Your population will evolve with your city, and the more developed it is, the more demands your citizens will have. Be wary of strikes if you neglect your population too much.

  • Trade: We will start with a classic resource exchange mechanic between players to support (or not) each other in times of difficulty in your friends' cities. Later, we plan to implement a more advanced economic system considering supply and demand to vary the value of resources.

  • Diplomacy: Although the game does not feature AI factions, we will integrate diplomacy to allow players who do not wish to co-manage a city to establish lasting relationships, whether economic, military, or technological.

  • Combat: We appreciate calm and peaceful games, but we are aware that some enjoy the military aspect. Therefore, we plan to implement this feature in the game. Whether through AI attacks during random events or simply if your friend has upset you, it will be possible to correct them amicably in the game by presenting your army.

  • Mods: We know that mods are an essential part of this type of game, and we also appreciate the ability to modify a game to add elements we like. Therefore, our goal is to support mods so that the community can create civilizations and other game elements as they wish, transforming the experience to their liking.

    Oikizo News

Hi everyone,After a while without any updates, I'm happy to announce that I've completed a major overhaul of Oikizo's custom engine.Over time, Oikizo had accumulated a lot of game-side code additions and workarounds to compensate for gaps in the engine. That's now been fixed — I went back down to the engine level to properly rework what needed reworking, in order to stabilize the game and make future additions to Oikizo much easier. While I was at it, I also built the V1 of the shadow system and improved support for 3D assets and animations, which let me add the beginnings of wildlife to enrich the game's visual content and make it feel a bit more alive. I'm working as fast as I can to bring you a new version of Oikizo. It will mostly consist of fixes and visual additions, as shown in the screenshot above, but it will serve as the new foundation for adding new gameplay features going forward :)L2N

Playtest fixes — translations, tutorial, Compendium, themes

Playtest fixes — translations, tutorial, Compendium, themes The first playtest sessions made one thing clear: Oikizo was hard to get into, especially if you don't read French. Players spent long minutes clicking "placement refused" without ever being told why, and parts of the UI still showed raw translation keys. Fair catch. This update is the fix pass. 🌍 Translations Oikizo ships in 17 languages, but a lot of the interface was only really finished in English and French. Untranslated text used to display its raw key (things like ui.governance.level_1). Every string now falls back to English instead. Full sweep: panels, seasons and weather, market resources, technologies, loading screens, recipe ingredients, server notifications and the journal all go through the translation layer now. The in-game date stayed French ("J4 M1 An1") no matter the language. Fixed. Quick language flags at the bottom-left of the main menu (EN, FR, ES, DE, 中文) — no need to dig through the options. The in-game language dropdown now shows the language you're actually playing in. 📚 Tutorial There was a tutorial. Most players never saw it, and it taught things in the wrong order. It now reliably starts for a new player, and re-arms on a new solo game. Roads come first. Almost every building has to be connected to your Town Hall by a road. The tutorial used to introduce roads last, as a speed bonus — it now teaches the rule as the prerequisite it actually is. "Placement refused" tells you why — no road, wrong terrain, missing resources — instead of just refusing. The harvesting step actually explains harvesting: trees, rocks and bushes are resources, you paint a zone, your citizens do the rest. 📖 Compendium (new) A full-screen in-game encyclopedia, opened from the hamburger menu. The front page is a clickable "city cycle" diagram: Your City at the center, with eight domains around it — Population, Production, Building, Research, Economy, Society, Threats, Multiplayer. Each domain opens a page e...

Oikizo: This Version Wasn't Supposed to Be Here… But We're Leaving It Up

Hi everyone,We're going to be completely transparent with you, because you deserve the truth: the version of Oikizo currently live on the main (Default) branch wasn't supposed to be there.Due to a mistake on our end, we pushed this build to the main branch when it was actually meant for the Beta branch — the one reserved for testing. In short: a slip of the hand, and a test build ended up in everyone's hands instead of just a few.Why aren't we pulling it right away? Because — the silver lining in this blunder — it's playable. Before, the game simply wouldn't launch. Now you can actually start a game and play it for real. Rather than putting everything back in the dark, we'd rather own the mistake, let you dive in, and gather your first impressions. But let's be clear about what you've got in your hands:This is NOT the version we planned to show you. Not the "showcase" build, not the final state, not even close. It contains bugs. It's a test build: that's normal, that's expected, and every bug you report saves us precious time. It's playable, but unstable in places. What's coming next: Development is running at full speed. We're actively fixing things, day after day. Our goal hasn't changed: to deliver a proper Early Access update — clean, solid, and finally worthy of what we want Oikizo to be. This accidental build is just an imperfect taste — think of it as a behind-the-scenes peek, not the official release. How you can help: While it's up, make the most of it: play, break the game, and tell us everything. Your feedback and bug reports are the fuel for this phase. Join us on our Discord to report a bug, share an idea, or follow development up close. Thanks for your patience with this little hiccup… and thanks for being here so early in the journey. We're building Oikizo with you.— The Oikizo Team
