Embark on a heroic fantasy journey where your words and actions shape the outcome. As part of the indie RPG lineup, Dragon Riddler challenges you to solve puzzles and face foes through clever use of language and strategy.

About this game

In this turn‑based word‑puzzle adventure, you are a Dragon Riddler: an adventurer seeking fabled dragon gold.

Journey through a fantasy land where words hold power and reality is scattered into mythic Regions. Each Region is guarded by a powerful foe, protected by magical Gates, and patrolled by monsters and ruffians of all kinds. As you fight your way forward, every Gate you open reveals a prophecy describing the possible breed of the final dragon. The prophecy is hazy at first but becomes clearer as you progress. Each dragon breed has its own strengths and weaknesses, so prepare wisely.

Both the combat and magic systems rely on a word‑based mechanic that creates synergy between the adventurer’s abilities and the player’s skill, with a healthy dose of luck and mastery. By choosing the right combat stance, you can shift between defensive, balanced and aggressive styles, and a Blackjack‑like preparation phase plays a crucial role in breaking the magical Gate seals.

Improve your adventurer by earning XP for building strong words and spending it on various boons. Your foes come with their own buffs, debuffs, and traits, and circumstances may trigger both beneficial and harmful effects on the hero.

Essentially, v0.4 is a new game!

When I saw the surprisingly low interest in the heroic fantasy adventure game I made, I was somewhat surprised and discouraged, as I genuinely thought I had created something unique and interesting, worthy to be played regularly. But numbers don’t lie, so I had to accept reality and decided to focus my efforts as a solo game developer elsewhere.I couldn’t completely abandon all hope though, and my mind worked tirelessly to figure out what could have gone so wrong and what I could do to give Dragon Riddler one more chance to shine. Then I made the decision and simply removed what I felt was not as good as it should have been. The Journey act was either too easy or too hard, but seldom in between. Realigning the focus on what worked – the word duel – was clearly the sensible design pillar, but it needed to be put into a framework that has become the system of Regions.Regions are self-contained islands of reality, dominated by a specific fantasy trope that also defines what type of enemies and challenges dwell on them. Each Region begins with a series of combat encounters, and the adventurer eventually reaches the Gate which protects the Region’s Guardian, the local “boss monster.”Gates are a new type of word-based puzzle, starting with a blackjack‑like gathering of magical strength, then turning into a seemingly straightforward but surprisingly challenging procession of words to break all the seals. If your word is not strong enough, something monumental happens: due to the magical backlash, the adventurer is teleported back to the beginning of the current Region and must fight their way back to the Gate and try again. Fail too many times, and the final dragon becomes older and thus more dangerous.Breaking a Gate’s last seal not only lets the adventurer proceed and face the Region Guardian; a prophecy is revealed with a list of the most likely breeds the final dragon is going to be. At first, the prophecy is uncertain, but as you travel, it solidifies, so you can relia...

    Development Resumed!

Rejoice! Good news!Even though I've been focusing on a completely new game project, I've decided not to let a good year's effort go to waste. Despite the odds, I will complete and release Dragon Riddler too.Based on feedback I received, it seems to me that the Journey act, in which the adventurer searches for the dragon's lair, was either way too easy or frustratingly hard.Over the couple of months I had the development of Dragon Riddler on hold, I kept thinking about it a lot. I believe I have figured out how to make the game better in every regard. The concept changes a bit. Don't worry: it's still very much about seeking treasure and fighting dragons of various breeds and age categories, so let me explain what's coming. The word-duel system will dominate the game, and your adventurer will fight the kinds of enemies you'd expect in heroic fantasy. You've already faced some during Journeys, but now you'll be able to fight them individually. But that's not all! I'm not the kind of designer-developer who just hacks something together and moves on. Let me introduce you to the Regions (or Realms) system. (I haven't decided the final term yet.)In a typical adventure there are 5 Regions. You start at Region 1, facing the easiest challenges, and your goal is to reach the final Region where the dragon's lair is.Each Region is protected by a few monsters and a boss, a stronger opponent. For example, the boss of the first Region is a Hatchling dragon who doesn't yet have any breath weapon but is already a formidable foe. Not all bosses are dragons. The Region boss guards a Gate or Portal (again, terminology not yet decided). To open it, you'll need to break a magical seal by playing a quick, refreshingly challenging new type of word puzzle aimed at building a stronger word than the one sealing your progress (no, this is not a puzzle you might have seen in my previous game, Words of Yendor, it's completely new idea). If you fail here, the magical ward throws you back at the start...

    Dragon Riddler Development Halted

Since launching the Dragon Riddler demo, Steam engagement and wishlist growth have been minimal. As a solo creator, I have to be careful with where I focus my time and energy, so I've decided to cut my losses and pause development indefinitely. Many thanks to all who tried the demo and offered their thoughts.Sandor

    Hotfix for Steam Deck

Despite testing thoroughly on Windows, Mac, and Linux, I didn't realize the game was unplayable on Steam Deck. It couldn't detect the correct screen size, so only the top left corner was visible. After finally getting my hands on a Deck, I discovered the native Linux build was causing the issue. Strangely, the Windows version via Proton worked fine.It took a lot of investigation and trial-and-error, but I eventually worked out a solution that makes the native Linux version run properly on Steam Deck, while still behaving as expected on desktop platforms. If you previously launched Dragon Riddler on Deck, your settings might still force the wrong resolution. To reset them, tap the top left corner of the main menu and press the green confirmation button. This hotfix should install automatically, so you don't need to configure anything. Please let me know if you find any bugs!Cheers,Sandor

    Hotfixes and some pleasant adjustments

Critically annoying bug fixed: The primary objective of this update was to correct a bug, which prevented some boons like the Farstrider Boots from activating. A minor annoyance was squished too: The game failed to remember the correct display on multi-monitor setups. Earthquake & Crystal Obelisks Earthquake is a new game event in v0.3, and I realized that it'd be neat if the tremors actually harmed Hazard-type encounters (i.e. Obstacles and Foes), in addition to shifting everything around a bit. Crystal Obelisks have also been added in v0.3 as a new type of Obstacles that subtly hint at the lore of the fantasy world of Dragon Riddler, but it seemed logical to me that these crystal structures should be more vulnerable to Earthquakes. Now they are. Severe Wounds & Fierce Determination Severe Wounds is a status effect, which was present since the first public release. When the dragon riddler or a dragon has lost 60% of their Life, the wounds have caused the loss of 1 Word Builder capacity, making it so much harder to build words. Some players rightly pointed out that falling into an unrecoverable downward spiral is never fun, but I liked the concept of a critical health condition being reflected in the game system. Then I realized that it's a very common trope in heroic stories that the wounded character gathers their strength (perhaps for the last time), and defends and attacks even more fiercely, having nothing to lose anymore. This brings us to a new status effect: Fierce Determination. The Severe Wounds is now only applied to hatchling dragons. They are not yet masters of their existence, and their willpower over their bodies is not yet able to take control over. Young dragons no longer have this weakness, but they are not yet experienced enough to find strength in a hopeless situation. Your character, the dragon riddler, and also adult dragons (and older ones) are different. They are the primary characters in these adventures, and thus, when they only have 30% of...
