    September Update

Hi all!Gamedev is hard, but parenting tends to be brutal now and then. There are however moments that make it worth - even at our child's young age of a couple of weeks. Hope gamedev also pays off some day. Even being proud of something you made is rewarding enough. In both areas. After the diaper has been changed, the belly is full, we've done our workout and had some fun communicating, the focus briefly shifts to optimization. We are continuing with the approach described last month - adding LODs, disabling objects and adding occluders. So far around 70% of the demo area has been optimized meaning that the frame rate constantly stays somewhere above 75. I've set the target at 75fps just to be on the safe side. We might gain some fps in the build but on the other hand my PC isn't that bad and I want players to have a good experience even on older machines. After I finish optimizing the demo area I'll create a build and test it out on my old laptop. Plan to do this this month. This is the roadmap for the following months but you never know:October Finish optimizing the game.November Go through our 'nice to have' and 'need to polish' list and close the most pressing points.December Debugging.Have a lovely month of October!M&V

    August update

Hi all!Uf! Quite a month behind us! Full of chaos. Things that have effected our life in the past weeks:We're parents now, so 50% of the development team is currently fully occupied with a new project dictated by a new manager while the other 50% of the team is struggling to put in some work here and there.A water pipe started leaking in our bedroom walls so we had to tear the wall apart and replace it, which was not a great timing having a newborn at home. For some reason our internet connection stopped working for a week. 4 technicians visited our apartment stating their opinions and in the end replacing 3 modems and 6 cables.Luckily we're developing the game as a fun free time project and we're not tied to any deadlines. Only the ones that we set ourselves. For all reasons stated above we adjusted our to do list a bit and paused the UI development - probably for the next few months (this is on the mother's to do list). The focus (as much as was left) was now shifted to performance optimization. We knew we would have to tackle this at some point but have been laying it off as it is well known that 'premature optimization is the root of all evil'. It was identified that most performance issues are graphics related. We've taken the following approaches in optimizing it:Simplifying complex meshes lowering the number of tris that need to be rendered.Introducing LODs for complex objects and often occurring objects like rocks, grass etc.Reshaping the terrain in some parts of the map to occlude the player's view - that way fewer objects need to be rendered in those critical areas.Testing these modifications in a part of the map we've gained around 30fps in the most critical areas so we'll try to apply these first to the demo area and then to the whole map. Might take some time with the current pace but we'll get there.Wherever you are enjoy the month of September!M&V

    July update

Dear friends and family! We are super happy to inform you that we've finally taken the big step and have started working on the UI - not just the counters, but the real thing! Here is a glimpse of what the inventory will look like. On the left there is a list of all the objects you have in your inventory. The right side displays the selected object along with a short description. The items that you can equip or use in any other way (like the map for example) can be selected through this user interface as well. The plan is to first finish the inventory and then also work on the other parts of the UI - map, adventure log, shop UI, flower collection ... A lot going on here. Hope you're able to cope with the heat waves if you are on the northern hemisphere. Enjoy the month of August! M&V

    June update

Hello to our vast fanbase of two! Great to have you here! It's been a busy month again in all aspects of life, gamedev included. One BIG thing to share is that the map of the game is finally completed! There are some minor tweaks on our to-do list like for example designing new foliage for the north part of the island, but terrain-wise this is it. These are all the islands, all the mountains, all the rivers and lakes, all the villages and all the forests that will be part of the game. What at first seemed to be a tiny map on a piece of paper turned out to be a quite big world in the end.We are continuing with the UI and UX development. We have the first non-placeholder UI elements in place and they will set the tone for the more complex parts of UI like the inventory, shop UI, adventure log (what is an adventure log you might ask) , flower collection etc. We are currently also working on the UX of the missing parts of the UI (audio settings, graphics settings, main menu etc.). Although it is starting to feel that we are really close to the finish line it also seems that there is SO MUCH left to do. Funny feeling. But yeah ... Getting there while still mostly having fun so you might have fun later as well.Enjoy the month of July!M&V

    May update

Hi to both of you reading this! Happy to have you here! Time flies by when you're having fun and the month of May is almost over. Hope you got your fair share of strawberries and possibly also some cherries already (if you are on the northern hemisphere),Last month we've written about two parts of the map that we still need to finish. Glad to let you know that number 2, which was the last missing island, is completed. It's gonna be super hard to get there - a chain of quests involving winning a tournament in a local sport and trading the trophy for some really nice gear will have to be completed before that. We are currently working on number 1 - the area called The north Isle of trees. Here is the last forest you will replant. We are aiming to make this area a bit more funky regarding the flora so it differs from the rest of the island. Will share some results in the next month's updates. We have also started working on the UI elements, which is a BIG part we still need to take care of. For now we only have placeholder visual elements but the UI is more or less fully functional. Here is one wormy icon for a sneak peak preview. Enjoy the month of June! M&V
