Isolation. Hopelessness. Starvation. By the will of an unknown force, you find yourself isolated from the outside world. Now you are doomed to starve to death. No one will come to your aid. No one will hear your prayers.
Indie, Free To Play · 2025 · More free games
In THE WELL, you face relentless isolation and starvation under an unknown force. With each step, hope fades as you navigate a harsh world alone, driven by the barest will to survive.
About this game
The nameless main character—a hermit who lives many miles away from the nearest human soul—after a splendid feast, he suddenly realizes that someone has doomed him to death. Any connection with the outside world was cut off by an unknown force: there was no electricity, the car was broken, and someone destroyed a battery-powered landline phone—the last chance to escape. The protagonist is physically unable to escape; he had chosen to live far away from other people, which was his undoing.
Slowly starving and going mad, he drinks water from the well in the hope of at least slightly dulling his unbearably growing desire to eat. One day, realizing that the bucket has caught something heavy, he puts all his strength into pulling out…
A human corpse.
GAMEPLAY OVERVIEW
THE WELL is a first-person psychological linear horror game with elements of exploration, hunting, and story progression. Explore the main character’s property and the surrounding forest.
After discovering the corpse straight from the well, the protagonist begins to carry out its orders, as if they came from a living person.
Day-by-day plot progression. Explore the main character’s property, shrouded in thick fog, as the story progresses. Find notes, books, and other interactive items that tell you what happens.
Execute the corpse’s requests. Even though communication is mostly one-sided, you understand what she needs.
Hunting. As a player, you will find yourself in the forest thicket teeming with humanoid creatures. You have to kill them with a slow-reloading rifle and finish them off them with a machete. Basic stealth and noise management included.
The core gameplay loop consists of exploring locations, reading notes, finding required items, completing simple objectives, and hunting creatures in small forest areas.
KEY FEATURES
A short psychological horror game (approximately 30 minutes long). It includes the full story experience, several in-game days, multiple locations to explore, notes to discover, and short hunting encounters.
A gradual descent into madness. The transformation of the house into a dump, complete moral decay. Each day alters the environment, giving the player new objectives and areas to explore.
Exploration and minimalist combat cycle. A slow-reloading rifle for the ranged attacks and a machete. The basic noise system is implemented—NPC will react to the player’s movement and gunfire, making noise an important part of the encounters.

About violence in games and my motivation + The new game
Hello everyone! It’s been a while since the last update. The exam break is over, and I started devoting more time to development. As the release date approaches (although the exact date hasn’t been announced yet, it is coming very soon), I would like to not only mention the project but also discuss something more general. My journey into game development began with David Szymanski, an amazing developer, and his games — Butcher’s Creek, Iron Lung, Squirrel Stapler, The Pony Factory, DUSK, etc. I love this man. In most of his games (especially in Butcher’s Creek), violence is the key element of both storytelling and gameplay. Graphic, grotesque. Not always naturalistic, but still. An original source of inspiration for THE WELL was Squirrel Stapler — a deliberately meaningless, surreal, and just bizarre game. That was the thing that hooked me. And also the violence level. After THE WELL and several unfinished projects, I started moving towards a more “alive” approach to storytelling. If there is violence in the game, it is often a part of the atmosphere, rather than the game’s foundation (see splatterpunk). Despite the bloody and very gloomy scenes, it has become more important to me to tell a meaningful story. I hope I can finally draw that line, finishing My Little Hell—the very personal project (not only because it will be paid, ha-ha) and a serious one. There is a drop in surrealism (I don’t think that you will ever play any project from me without it); it turned out to feel more alive. At least, it’s my opinion. The game will be short, but longer than previous ones, and will cost $3.I hope you’ll like it :)The game is not perfect, but your reviews help me create something even more beautiful in the future.Add it to your wishlist!Read full article on Community Announcements (Marrit)AnnouncementsOfficial
THE NEW GAME
Hey everyone!I wanted to notify you that, at the same time as I'm working on SNUFF, a horror immersive sim, I’m also developing another short psychological horror game called My Little Hell. Development is currently in its final stages, and the release is scheduled for roughly the beginning of August. This place is his little hell. After everything that was done, he will spend as much time here as his personal devil wishes. The only problem is that his brain turned completely to mush. He doesn’t remember what happened. He doesn’t even remember his own name. Add to wishlists :3Read full article on Community Announcements (Marrit)AnnouncementsOfficial

RUSSIAN LOCALIZATION + THE BIG UPDATE
Hey everyone!I’m glad to introduce the large update for THE WELL. As the production of the new, more ambitious game begins, I decided to refine my old projects. This update includes the support of the Russian language, fixes, and several interesting in-game mechanics. If you find any flaws or bugs in the new version, don’t hesitate to write them in the comments under this post or in the community section. I will read that and will try to promptly fix shortcomings.RUSSIAN LOCALIZATIONTranslation of monologues and notes.Translation of the UI.Translation of inscriptions written on the wall.Translation of the achievements. FIXESFixed a bug that caused the in-game UI to resize when the screen resolution was changed.Changed the system of interactable items that caused freezes during the first walkthrough. The highlight was removed, and the new optional hints system was added. The positions of two of the three bodies (in the minigame, the next day after the discovery of the body from the well) changed. I know this point caused confusion because the corpses’ positions in the note and in reality didn’t match. The hunting minigame has been significantly streamlined. This part also made the game much more difficult to complete, as players couldn't find the NPC on the large map.The volume of fall after the jump was increased. Before, it was much quieter than other sounds. The mass of the in-game logs that were straining the system has been removed.A physical separation between certain objects on the map has been fixed. The typo in the name of one achievement was fixed. The bug that allowed the player to walk during the titles was fixed. The bug that prevented players from progressing from one hunting stage to the next has been fixed. The sound of typing text became quieter, as it had been a bit annoying before.Fixed a bug that required interacting with the car instead of its under-the-hood contents at the end of the game.NEW STUFFA mouse-click sound effect has been added when buttons i...Read full article on Community Announcements (Marrit)AnnouncementsOfficial
"The Black Whale" Out Now!
"The Black Whale," my next indie project, OUT NOW! The game is completely free. You are a worker at the “White Whale” factory. The dystopian world of the future reminds you of the most horrible times from the past. The poverty that reigns in the country and is practically all-consuming does not allow anyone like you to climb the social ladder. You have a small chip implanted in your brain, automating your work. Annoying and uncomfortable vibrations always caused aversion. However, once you come to the job, it seems to you that your head is about to split. It hurts right in the middle of the brain, where the board is. After barely making it to the medical unit, you realize there's no help coming. No one is gonna help you.You were agonizing for several days when you suddenly found out about “Black Whale,” the only drug that can relieve the pain. At the same time, it sends you on an amazing journey on the back of flying whales.Although there is a problem, “Black Whale” is very expensive. You have to find money.
