    DEVLOG #5: Localizing ORBA

Hello everyone!Today we want to talk about something that may look fairly simple from the outside, but turned out to be one of the more unexpectedly difficult parts of developing ORBA: localization.ORBA will be available in three languages: English, German and Japanese. We would have loved to support even more languages, but we made the decision to only localize the game into languages we actually have access to ourselves. Localization is more than putting a sentence into a translator and replacing the original text with the result. Especially once a game starts inventing its own terminology, context matters a lot.German and Japanese are the two languages besides English where we felt we could properly judge whether something sounds natural, fits the game and - most importantly - actually means what we want it to mean.As it turns out, one of them was considerably easier than the other.English came firstWhen we started developing ORBA, localization was not really on our minds yet.All text was written in English first: menus, tutorials, dialogue, item descriptions, names for mechanics and all the little bits of text scattered throughout the Tower. At that point, we simply wrote whatever worked best in English. We didn't think about how long a sentence might become in another language, whether a fictional term would translate well or whether the font we were using could even display another writing system properly.Which, in hindsight, is something we would definitely approach differently today. As development progressed and ORBA became a much more complete game, we started thinking about additional languages. Since we already had all of the English terminology established by then, localization became less about designing three languages alongside each other and more about figuring out how to make the other two fit the game we had already built. For German, that worked surprisingly well.German fit right inTranslating ORBA into German was generally very straightforward.Of co...

DEVLOG #4: From Feedback to Release

Hello everyone! The time has finally come: ORBA is officially releaseing September 13th and the leaderboard is yearning for your scores! But the game wouldn't be what it is today without the feedback of our valued demo players. This is why we want to take the time and review what changes we made based on your feedback.Button Remapping@ThePiPiper, @MagisOne of the most asked for features was the ability to remap the controls - which is certainly understandable as ORBA both has a unique default input scheme and relies on tight, reliable controls at the same time. This is why, ultimately, there was no way around this for us ;)Now you can remap the controls to your liking, whether you rather want to move with the arrow buttons instead of WASD or the D-Pad instead of the left stick. Optimize your inputs and climb the leaderboard! The Dojo@KilerMaxiIn ORBA, there is very little room for you to breathe. The little breaks between your runs at the base of the tower are your only refuge. What it was missing is a place to not only rest from the constant pressure of the climb, but also practice the controls, lucky charm abilities and various obstacles of the tower. This is why we introduced the Dojo! Here you can play with an Orb in a tower-like setup without any time pressure. You can also set a fixed lucky charm ability to test out. And if you explore the Dojo thoroughly, you might find a few surprises!Trial Leaderboards@MagisTo make competition in ORBA even fiercer, you can now toggle the leaderboard to view individual trials alongside your total score! Use the new leaderboard toggle to compare against trial specific times, hunt down individual records, and refine your runs trial by trial.Improved Stats@MagisWe've made several improvements to the "Stats" page in the encyclopedia: First of all, you are now able to review your total best score and best total time. You can also review your best time for each trial separately.Additionally we've changed the way the stats (behind the...

DEVLOG #3: The Music of ORBA

Hello everyone! In today's devlog, we've got a very special guest: my wonderful, amazing friend Luka (itch.io, soundcloud), who generously lent us his incredible talent to create five (!) unique soundtracks for ORBA that are absolute bangers - just because I asked (I still can't believe it). He's going to take you through the making of the music for the last two levels. Happy reading (and listening)!Missing #2? We wrote a technical, itch.io specific devlog about the web demo, you can find it here: DEVLOG #2: Deploying ORBA to the WebHi all! Today I want to tell you a bit about Orba’s original soundtrack. When I was first asked to create the soundtrack for Orba, I had just a rough idea of what the general vibe for the game would be. I knew it would be inspired by a Japanese pagoda and that we wanted to reflect this - at least partially - in the music. For the initial track - which became the track for the first level - we iterated and scrapped a few ideas and ultimately ended up with the track that is also present in the first trailer. It’s fast, aggressive and still has a few Japanese elements to reflect the game’s inspiration. This set the tone for how the rest of Orba’s music would sound. In Orba, every level is unique, with its own challenges and mechanics - and the tracks were meant to reflect their uniqueness. Specifically, we’re going to talk about the creative process behind the tracks for the last two levels of Orba - the Air trial and the Void trial. The track for the fourth level is a welcome break from the fast-paced, aggressive Techno soundtrack of the previous level. While the actual tempo of the two Drum-and-bass tracks is faster than the rest of the music, it doesn’t feel all that rushed thanks to the classic breakbeat and irregular hi-hat patterns. I mainly drew inspiration from Liquid DnB, a Drum-and-bass subgenre with slow pad sounds and softer drums than some other DnB subgenres. The track incorporates various flute sounds, namely samples of the Shak...
