Bringing Sketches to Life
Hello hello hello! We've been cooking some content for this update to feature all the effort and work we've put recently on Character Animation and Cinematics for Elusive. We'll be introducing the cast in future updates, but let us show what we've doing so far first!Character Animation & CinematicsOver the past few months, we’ve focus more on character animations to enrich their behaviors and highlight each character’s unique charm (in their own way, in some cases). This has also allowed us to start working on cinematics, which we’ll use in Elusive to introduce certain characters and enhance truly meaningful moments in the narrative. And of course, here we are with some examples:And, between you and me, the process of getting here has been a blast:You’re now probably curious to know more about the characters shown above, right? Leave us your thoughts in the comments, and we’ll put together a proper cast introduction for the next update!Enter the communityIf you like what we're doing with Elusive, you can join our community to know more about us as developers, our already-released games, or simply to get access to promotions, updates, and news.On Discord, we have a large, active community where we talk about the things we love most (not just video games!), answer questions, and just hang out.Our newsletter will keep you updated on our latest news (did you know we’re developing another game called Bel’s Fanfare?), our game sales, and giveaways. It’s not too late to join in!Late Pledges are also available in Kickstarter — Check it out now!See you next month with a new update!Read full article on Community Announcements (Chibig)AnnouncementsOfficial
A new home called Lair
We have gathered a lot of content from a very important Elusive location, for many reasons, so we wanted to dedicate an entire update to it: Welcome to Lair. What is Lair?In a world where the Elusive exist —creatures as tiny as insects— and where everything around them can threaten their lives, a small refuge where they can feel safe is essential. Here, on the lowest level of Casa Grande, with direct access to Jardín—a place of both dangers and opportunities—lies Lair. Lair is this place of gathering and rest, not only for Zoe, but for other Elusive. Some have been here a long time and will remain as long as it is safe; others are just passing through, some are no longer here though signs of their presence remain, and others have just arrived, like our young protagonist. In Lair, the Elusive are safe from environmental and animal threats, and have established their tiny society. Without mutual support through the exchange of resources, information, and other services, these tiny beings could hardly survive, so it’s lucky for a raider like Zoe to have stumbled upon this place, isn’t it? Rest up, get readyDuring the countless raids we’ll undertake with Zoe while playing Elusive, Lair will always be the place we can return to when our backpack is full or our health is low. This safe zone is connected to several entrances/shortcuts inside Casa Grande as well as to Jardín, making it a strategic location for moving around more efficiently. The Bonfires also take place in Lair: moments that advance the narrative of Elusive and mark the end of a raid run until the following morning. Our personal playgroundWe’re aware that a place like Lair isn’t a typical feature of Metroidvania games, it might even seem more like something you’d find in the survival genre (and not even that common), but this is where our Chibig personality really shines through.By constantly putting ourselves in the shoes of Zoe and the Elusive, we’d love to be certain that in such a hostile world, we’ve at lea...Read full article on Community Announcements (Chibig)AnnouncementsOfficial
Introduction to the narrative of Elusive - Zoe’s Memories
Greetings, elusive tiny raiders! While we gather more material on the latest we’ve been working on in development, we’re going to show you more about Zoe’s Memories: visual pieces you can find as collectibles (if you explore enough) that will reveal more about Zoe and her past.“A thousand stars” There is nothing bigger than the sky, because it has no limits. Many times you will feel tired of being so small and being threatened by everything, but think that even Giant people are insignificant under the immense canopy of stars.Sometimes we need to see things in perspective to find their bright side.“Far from home”It's not all practice! Zoe's father also lets her join him on some of his raids so she can gradually gain experience until she can do it on her own.Like everything else, raid after raid, we will gain skill and ability until we become just a dancer in the shadows.“Big House Tunnels”The Elusive raiders borrow what they find on their adventures, but they also open new paths so that other Elusive can obtain resources and move safely through Big House.Zoe's father teaches her how to design these maps so that she can make her own when she grows up, to guide her and mark treasures and dangers.“Practice” As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.Theory is very important, of course, but Zoe needs lots of practice under her father's watchful eye to develop her skills before venturing out into the open world. These are Zoe's favorite moments, and she doesn't mind throwing the hook over and over again until her muscles memorize every movement. That brings her one step closer to being ready!“Treasure” Valuable objects aren't always right under our noses, so it's best to keep our eyes peeled and explore every corner to find real treasures.Zoe learned this quickly from her father, because looking for a little sparkle that reveals something interesting is so much fun! These Memories not only convey part of the narrative behind Elusive and our protagonist Zoe, but also give us i...Read full article on Community Announcements (Chibig)AnnouncementsOfficial
Game Loop Demo — Sharing Small Victories
Hey, it’s been a while, isn’t it?Not gonna lie: we’ve been really busy since the public announcement and Kickstarter campaign for Bel’s Fanfare, but that doesn’t mean we’ve put Elusive on the back burner. Not at all!In fact, we wanted to retake these updates to share our progress on development, and to start off strong, we wanted to tell you about our latest major milestone: the Game Loop Demo. What on earth is the Game Loop Demo? You might be wondering. Well, it’s a small version of the game, similar to a demo, that showcases various aspects of the game: progression, animations, levels, characters, menus, inventory… so many things! And we wanted to test it internally to validate all these concepts before continuing with development. Well, we did it! And we dedicated an intensive testing session with the whole team to gather a lot of valuable feedback. To sum it up: we’re very proud and satisfied with what we achieved with this, and it has convinced us that we’re on the right track according to our vision. This version of the game is strictly for internal use, but it could serve as a good foundation for a public demo in the future (which is definitely coming). Here are some of our impressions:CombatSurprise! After much deliberation, we decided that we couldn't develop our first Metroidvania (even if it's entry-level) without including some combat. We had two versions of enemies: cockroaches and mosquitoes. In the final version of the game, there will be more variety, both in type and difficulty, but we're already very happy with the result. They feel alive and, at times, really annoying. Just as we intended! HahahaCharactersWe have also created animations and dialogues for some characters, so that we can get a first taste of the adventure and assess their personalities.Okay, okay. It was also because Zoe looked very lonely. The truth is, it's been great to see how each person on the team has been charmed by one character or another. And allow us to be a little less than h...Read full article on Community Announcements (Chibig)AnnouncementsOfficial
Introduction to the narrative of Elusive - Zoe’s Memories
Hello Elusive raiders, it’s been a while since the last update! We are completely immersed in the development of Elusive, but we have gathered some content that we want to share with you so that you can know more about this game and its characters. Elusive won't be a game with extensive dialogue, but we have a lot to tell and convey. One of the channels we'll be using is Zoe's Memories: collectibles hidden in the corners of Giant House that will tell us more about Zoe, her father, and Elusive’s lifestyle. “Second Lives”A button? It could be a curious gift if you open your mind. The Elusive, especially the raiders, are adept at seeing the possibilities in the objects they borrow that others would overlook.Zoe's father always encourages her to look beyond and seek out the incredible potential of things around us. “Falling down and getting up”We will fail more than once, but we must learn from those moments to do better next time. It will be frustrating, as we will lose part of what we have collected on our raid, but it will make us more cautious and wiser for next time. “It doesn’t bite”Careful, that mouse looks big! It's very easy not to be afraid of many animals if you're bigger than them, but when it's the other way around, things are seen from a different perspective. However, with caution, respect, and empathy, we can learn a lot from them. We can even build relationships where we help each other survive in a world that can sometimes be very hostile. “Guardian Cloaks”The Guardian Cloak is an icon that Elusive raiders wear with pride. In addition to recognition, it is their most precious tool in their adventures, helping them to hide and protect themselves. “Check it twice”As a good father and teacher, Zoe's dad teaches her from a young age to check and prepare well before going on a raid. You must be prepared to complete your mission successfully, but also in case something unexpected happens. Imagine if your hook failed during a jump! This is just a glimpse of al...Read full article on Community Announcements (Chibig)
