About this game
The Ultimate How-to-Socialize video game for the Socially Curious!
Social Caterpillar follows an introvert navigating the exhausting task of socializing. Interactions are puzzles that need solved. The more you solve, the more energy you gain to explore... but only if you can ignore the wet whispers of the mysterious Yellow Voice...

Solve people like puzzles!
Solve a myriad of puzzles, each with its own internal logic.
Exploration and experimentation reveals layers of secrets.
A story told through set pieces and implications.
Adjust CRT to preference, from NONE to EYES BLEED.
Maybe there's a hidden ARG in there. Maybe.
Sew. Shell. Eyes.
Increase your Social Battery!
Your Social Battery determines how far you can wander from the safety of your home. Interacting with people will drain your energy, but, like with any exercise, that energy will return greater than before. Grow and strengthen your little introverted larva until it becomes a big, strong caterpillar. But be careful: the comfort of the cocoon can be hard to escape.

Audio Blast Patch (D28M07Y2026)
This is a minor update that mostly fixes the intro jingle to have proper volume so that I stop blasting your eardrums out! If you can still hear me through the bleeding, know I'm sorry.Fixed the audio blasting issue of the logo on start-up.Changed location of Quit option in Seating Arrangement.Fixed the color blindness issue of Private Entrance.Minor credits correction.Just as a reminder, there is a Color Assist option now! DEV LOGNot sure how it escaped me, but it turns out the game would load up the audio values only after the Twelve Tiles jingle had triggered. This means that no matter what you saved the audio settings to, the jingle would play at default value, destroying your ears and the ears of your future descendants.Hopefully that's fixed!Sorry! Also, my other game, Last Word, is now legally fully under my control after 10 years! Go check it out, and then buy it! And then leave me reviews, please!Obrigado gozaimasu!Read full article on Community Announcements (Merlandese)Patch NotesOfficial
Color Assist Patch (D28M05Y2026)
Color Assist is now an option in the menu! When turned on, puzzles and icons that would require knowledge of their color will either have a color code stickered onto them, or the puzzle itself will look slightly different than before. If this affects you, and you have opinions on its efficacy, please let me know! :)Added Color Assist to the options.Fixed Detective Faux's name in credits.Minor update to the "Standing Out" puzzles.Fixed a bug that showed "Invasive Caller" in the wrong spot.Small image optimizations.(Color Assist can be toggled in the options menu.) DEV LOGOther than the Color Assist, I also modified the first few puzzles in Standing Out. This one has always been hard to communicate to players, but I think the first few puzzles make it slightly more obvious what needs done. Please leave a review if you haven't already! Once I get 50 reviews, I can cocoon happily!Obrigado gozaimasu!Read full article on Community Announcements (Merlandese)Patch NotesOfficial
Detective Chief Inspector Patch (D28M04Y2026)
This is a minor patch with very small QoL and a bit of congratulations to the first person (to my knowledge) to don their deerstalker and solve the puzzle meta-hunt to completion. I've added a custom character in their honor, as well as added them to the credits. :)Added Detective Faux character.Added credits for ARG solver(s?).Minor character select image update.Minor font spacing adjustment.Added more clear indication of when a Stray Caterpillar is new.Added a little interaction with birthday room lights ("SURPRISE!").Added another food map called "Rations" and put it in the trash.Widened warp spaces for wide TVs.Slightly more Bambridge...?Moved some stuff around in Oval Mode.Added Ferdk to Oval Mode (may require new Oval file to see text).Fixed a graphical error in Ending C post-credits.DEV LOGNot much to say here. I'm happy to see someone has reached the end of the ARG; adding a custom character as a soft reward seemed like the least I could do. I also feel a little stupid for not having Ferdk in the Oval Mode room already, since he's always been a huge asset as a creative partner and as a professional. Go check his YouTube and support him on Patreon if you can! Also, if you like the game (or even if you don't!) please leave a review! Bottleneck Branch Patch (D16M02Y2026)
This is a very minor patch to address a couple balance-y thingies and some requests. It has no major impact on existing files.Images on your room computer can now be enlarged for extra readability. The path between Alley and Chairish now has a lower Gift requirement to open (7->5).The Elevator in Chairish can now be immediately accessed from the Chairish side.Small extra bit of visual satisfaction when discovering a certain secret that no one has found yet, and perhaps no one will ever find.DEV LOGQuick note on this, kinda spoilery. One of the bottlenecks I put in the post-game progression is in the Birthday room. The idea here is that the player won't have access to a lot of different things until after the event with their first romance. This makes playing a little more linear, to help first-time players funnel towards the ending.Previously, the issue with the bottleneck is that it has a path and a half. You can access the Alley, the Museum, and potentially Chairish, but after that you are locked out of anything else unless you take the Debug route. By allowing the Elevator to be accessed in Chairish, it's still a bit of a mechanical hurdle (figuring out Gifts is hard, and you need to do more than one), but it allows an alternate path to the rest of the game that is independent of discovering Debug. This means that the lower-right room in the Birthday setting is a double-branching bottleneck: from here, you have access to either the Debug Room path or the Chairish path.Enjoy!Read full article on Community Announcements (Merlandese)Patch NotesOfficial
Guilty Pleasures Patch (D11M02Y2026)
With this update, the biggest change is one to the Hidden Diary puzzle. I'll write a short dev log about it below the bullets. Here are the other changes:Added Airman Elite character.Fixed bug in speech room that allowed early access the Herd Mentality.Fixed bug in Music Lessons where you can challenge MUS songs that you shouldn't be able to.This bullet point is just a reminder to leave a review please. :)Moved location of "Delivery" and "Leftovers".Changed information received after solving the "Fridge Logic" clue.Removed Audio puzzle in Hidden Diary and replaced it with a triple code entry.Simplified the music code generated at the keyboard.Altered the visuals of one of the types of images you can generate in Love Muscle.Graphical update to PupaBoys.Note that if you are using an old save file, these changes will all work, but there may be some new clues that don't appear in your computer in your room. This shouldn't have any adverse effects on your file or its progress.DEV LOG I just want to write some of my process about the changes here, for my future self, but also in case anyone is curious. One small aspect of a game with many diverse types of puzzles is that some puzzles will play to strengths, and others to weakness. This is why something like Inconvenient Store is very different from Divvy Deal, and so one. Among these types of puzzles, I figured a natural fit would be using relative pitch.Growing up, I always considered (and still consider) musical intelligence to be one of the types of thinking that can be practiced and honed, just as much as spatial recognition, pattern recognition, or arithmetic. So I'll admit that I was a bit surprised to find that a not-insignificant amount of puzzle solvers found the four-tone Hidden Diary puzzle to be frustrating rather than simply difficult. The intention there was always to be a hard wall, because the Hidden Diary doesn't really lead to anything "tangible" in the game. It's mostly used as a path to a much more invo...Read full article on Community Announcements (Merlandese)
