About this game

Every level brings an assortment of tasks to complete. Place and merge tiles using patterns that you’ll discover along the way. Plan ahead, find optimal solutions, and earn rewards that you’ll use to build your Homestead.
In addition to merging tiles, there is a relaxing Hidden Object Mode where you can enjoy searching for cute animals and photographing them in beautiful surroundings.
Play Hex Town single player or multiplayer with up to 4 players. It’s the perfect way for puzzle lovers and cozy gamers alike to zone out in a quiet world with gentle progression.

Every tile has a type and a tier. Place three tiles of the same type in the right pattern, and they'll merge into a single tile one tier higher. Chain merges to create higher tiers and complete tasks.
Every level adds a small checklist of tasks to complete. If a placement doesn't work out, grab the pickaxe to return a tile to your hand, or restart the level to chase a perfect run.

After completing a level's required tasks, you'll earn a loot chest with several rewards inside. These rewards usually include tiles, animals, and environment options (weather, lighting, grass...) that you can use in your Homestead. Occasionally you'll also find cosmetics for your hand cursor and trophies to celebrate your achievements.
There are 5 rarity levels for rewards, ranging from Normal to Hexceptional. Higher difficulty level puzzles reward higher rarity rewards, and earning a silver or gold star increase the total number of rewards that the loot chest will contain.
Hexpeditions: Puzzle levels with progressive difficulty and rewards
Hidden Objects: Relax and find animals from a list to take pictures of
Homestead: Spend rewards to build and upgrade your own town
Tutorial: A step-by-step intro where you play to learn
Hand Cursors: Your in-game avatar is a floating hand which you can unlock cosmetics for, and which you can use to gesture to other players and interact with the environment
Environment Customization: Tons of options for weather, grass, paths, lighting, wind, fog, and more that you can unlock
Trophy Room: A shelf of interactive trinkets you’ve earned while playing
Hand Studio: Make your hand cursor unique with a variety of colors, skin tones, fingernail polishes, and jewelry
Controller support: A controller-first experience that feels great on any gamepad or Steam Deck
Multiplayer co-op: Team up to complete puzzles or search for cute animals together
Dynamic music: A lovingly-crafted soundtrack that loops randomly so it's never the same twice
Interactive world: Use your cursor to drag, throw, push, pull, splash, and pat things as you play

Hex Town was designed and developed with controller support as a high priority.
For me, there's something about kicking back with a controller that makes a game feel especially immersive and enjoyable. I want to make sure you can enjoy Hex Town using your favorite input, be it a gamepad, handheld, or keyboard and mouse.
I've added easy button re-mapping in the settings in case you don't find the default controls intuitive. If there's something I missed or a control that doesn't feel right, please reach out or use the feedback button in game and let me know!

How do the puzzles (AKA Expeditions) work?
Tiles always merge in groups of 3 of the same tile. Each tile has a type, and each tile type requires a unique pattern of 3 to merge. The merged tile will be 1 level higher than the tiles that created it.
As you progress, you’ll get higher difficulty tasks, new types of tasks, and more bonus tasks. There are 5 tiers to complete, each with their own reward and trophy. Higher tiers grant more and rarer rewards.
How does Hidden Object mode work?
You’ll have a task list which includes several animals to find and photograph. There’s a hint button which will play the animal’s sound, as well as show a large hint circle outline that contains the animal.
Once you find the animal, you’ll open your camera, adjust the focus, and take a picture.
As you progress, the environments get larger and there will be more animals to find. There are 5 tiers to complete, each with their own reward and trophy. Higher tiers grant more and rarer rewards.
Is multiplayer co-op or competitive?
All game modes have cooperative multiplayer. Whether it’s placing and merging tiles or photographing friendly animals, everyone works together to complete shared tasks.
What’s the difference between single player and multiplayer in puzzle mode (AKA Hexpeditons)?
Each level starts with a ‘deck’ of tiles that get distributed amongst all players at the start. Whether it’s 1 or 4 players, the rules and number of tiles remain the same. Multiplayer means you’ll need to communicate and work together to plan your merges, but you’ll also have playable tiles to work with, since each person can hold 5 in their hand.
What’s the difference between single player and multiplayer in Hidden Object mode)?
Multiplayer is nearly identical to single player in Hidden Object mode. The only difference is that any player can take a photo and complete the shared tasks, instead of just one.
How does the 3-star system work?
During each level, you have the potential to earn a bronze, silver, or gold star by completing Required Tasks and Bonus Tasks. Silver and gold stars both add an additional reward to your loot chest, and gold stars are required for certain achievements.
Are all puzzle levels solvable?
All puzzle levels have at least one optimal solution, meaning you are guaranteed to be able to complete all Required and Bonus tasks.
How long does the average level take?
A: Most levels take ~5-15 minutes each to solve, with the highest difficulty puzzle levels taking ~10-20.

Hey there! I'm Addison. I have been a game developer for 13 years now, and this is my first solo project. I've always been interested in and inspired by games like Townscaper, Tiny Glade, Minecraft, and just about anything with a creative mode.
I started this project with a few simple ideas I wanted to stick to. No time pressure, no 'Game Over' screen, and plenty of room for multiplayer shenanigans. The rest was trail and error, asking "What if I...?" a lot, tweaking features until they felt right, and removing them when they didn't.
Since the start of this project, I've moved to a different country, learned to 3D model, improved my 2D art skills, stepped into the scary world of marketing and advertising, and way overshot my personal timeline goal of 1 year.
I hope you'll enjoy the big features, but also the little details, as you play my game. I can't wait to hear what you think! I doubt many have read this far, so to those who have: I genuinely appreciate your time and interest in my project. Thank you! :)

Hex Town Update v1.1.0
Hi everyone! Addison here with Hex Town's first update, 1.1.0. There's some exciting changes and additions I want to share, so let's get right to it. German translation support! After separating out all of Hex Town's words and phrases into a big table, I have been slowly but surely translating each part of Hex Town. There ended up being more than 1,500 spots! I used an automatic translation for the first pass, and I am working with a native speaker to help find and correct any areas that don't sound natural. It won't be 100% perfectly-translated for this release, but I will continue to update and make it as good as possible. You can find the new language selection menu on the home screen or in the settings! I hope to translate Hex Town into many more languages in the future. Safari camera re-workI have received feedback that Safari Mode camera controls were clunky, that the game mode wasn't as interesting as some had hoped, that players wished they could save the photos they took, and that it needed some updates in general. While it still has a ways to go before I'm completely happy with it, I have started by improving the photo mode controls, adding new lenses, and my favorite part: adding a scrollable photo gallery where you can view photos you've taken and save them to your device. It even includes a fun clothesline animation with SFX. :) Further zoomSome players noted that the camera zoom felt too restrictive, so I increased the zoom distance by almost double, and adjusted the fog layering accordingly. I also increased the camera's default field of view so that you can see more of the world without zooming out. Homestead co-op buildingThis is one I wanted to get in for 1.0, but didn't have time. You can now build collaboratively with your friends in Homestead mode! Your unlocks also become available to everyone in the Homestead instance, and vice versa. However, they will not stay with you when you leave (unless you are the owner of the Homestead, in which case t...Read full article on Community Announcements (Addyarb)AnnouncementsOfficial
Hex Town is now in Early Access!
Hi everyone! It's my pleasure to welcome you to Hex Town Early Access. It's been nearly two years in the making, and I'm so glad to finally be here with you. Hex Town has been a passion project that I've been working tirelessly on since I was laid off from my game development job back in November 2024. I decided it was now or never if I wanted to create something that was my own vision from start to finish, and here we are. I've had so much support and kindness from friends, family, and even strangers along the way that I'm so grateful for. Thank you everyone. Whether you followed along on Reddit, curiously wish-listed during Next Fest, or stumbled upon Hex Town out of the blue, I'm happy you did, and I can't wait to show you around. Hex Town is quite close to being done. You can expect a fully functional, polished, and fun game right out of the box. You can also expect meaningful updates that bring new content, improvements, fixes, and features based on the feedback I receive. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for your interest in Hex Town, and I hope to see you soon! Sincerely AddisonRead full article on Community Announcements (Addyarb)
