Devlog #07: Features Featured in DreadOut 3 - Irisphone Pt. 2
Well, well, well, here we are again, Keepers. Can you guys believe that we’re like 3 months away from 2027????? At this point, we feel like time no longer flies; it’s practically teleporting from one year to another in a blink of an eye, no?With that aside, we think this last quarter will be a very busy one (maybe even the busiest), with many great games releasing SO soon, including the new Castlevania, Phantom Blade Zero, The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time, and we hope you’re excited to be a maling mobil (a.k.a. car thief ) if you have pre-ordered ✨THE✨ GTA VI. RIP wallet :( But we hope things are going well for everyone, even if it’s just a few things at a time. Also, let us know which one you guys are considering buying! Sooo, anyway, let’s get back on track talking about DreadOut 3. You know, we’re currently still cooking the gameplay in DreadOut 3, it’s in the works. We saw some of you asking if there would be a combat mechanic like the one we have in DreadOut 2. Well, let’s dig into it. In this third one, we kind of want to give players more freedom in how they explore the world, but not in the sense that the game would be an open world, of course. That’s why the game adopts a non-linear survival horror approach. Certain areas can be explored in different sequences, and not everything you discover will immediately lead you to the next objective, while others might draw you right toward something you didn’t expect. However, exploration in DreadOut is not only about finding your way round and finishing the game. As a Keeper of the Dark, Linda now shares a much closer bond with the supernatural realm. She can communicate with spirits and traverse the thin boundary between the human world and the spirit world. Sometimes she does this intentionally, and other times, the other world comes to her. As the veil between these two worlds grew thinner, Linda’s ability to perceive things invisible to ordinary humans became a crucial part of the gameplay. This is when the...Read full article on Community Announcements (lattezest)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog #06 - Designing Linda's Enemies Pt.1: Kuntilanak
Welcome back, fellow keepers! How’s it going? Our country was just celebrating the independence day recently, but the best thing about that is: it’s a public holiday! So we all had a nice little break (again) to wind down. It was nice since some people at our office were taking turns catching cold :( BUT we hope every one of you has been doing okie!Well, now you read the title, we’re gonna talk ghostiessss~~ But before we talk about it, let’s see the bigger picture on what kind of ghosts we’d like to put on your screen in DreadOut 3?In DreadOut 3, besides our intention to create ghosts as Linda’s enemies, we also want it to somehow become an embodiment of the culture we coexist with. That’s why we feel like going back to the Indonesian folklores, urban legends, and local beliefs. And if there’s one figure inextricably intertwined with Indonesian supernatural entities, it’s undoubtedly Kuntilanak, a.k.a Miss K, a.k.a The Flying Lady. It’s a ghost that appears in almost every horror form in Indonesia, and that’s including our game. Since the first DreadOut, Kuntilanak has been one of the most recognizable ghost in the DreadOut universe. Consequently, when we began developing Kuntilanak for DreadOut 3, the challenge went beyond simply recreating the existing design. We had to consider how she would behave, how she would appear before Linda, as well as ensuring that the encounter should still feel scary, one way or another. Let’s revisit a bit how Kuntilanak evolved within Indonesian ghost stories and culture. Almost every region around the globe has its own way of recounting supernatural figures, and each one closely defined to the culture in a certain country or even area. Kuntilanak has similar characteristics that can be found in ghost stories in other Asian countries. Japan has Ubume (that’s classified as a Yurei), Thailand has Nang Nak, while Indonesia has the Kuntilanak. The stories between the three and its contexts may naturally and/or culturaally differ, but th...Read full article on Community Announcements (lattezest)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog #05 – Audio & Music, Part 1: Giving Dread a Heartbeat with the Horror Box
Great to see you again, fellow keepers. Welcome to another dev log! Before we jump into the development update, here’s a little behind-the-scenes moment: We celebrated our boss’ birthday just yesterday! 🎉🎉 It was a really nice chance for the team to take a pause and celebrate good times. Since (almost) all we did yesterday was eating cake and hot dogs our boss cooked for everyone! Now, with the celebrations wrapped up, let's jump into what we've been working on. Like every horror game ever, it has to own a soul; whether it’s given or stolen. In DreadOut, we believe sounds, audio, music, or whatever you can hear are powerful and highly possible to embody a soul. When it's done right, it would turn to terrors that crawl from your ears to your chest before your eyes could ever recognise what’s in front of you. So, for the scoring in Dreadout 3, we work together with some cool guys from EXP Studio, Aldi, and Dissa. EXP Studio is basically a music production studio we’ve been working with through some of our titles, including DreadHaunt, Jurnal Risa: Dark Destiny, Broomstick Exorcist, and now, DreadOut 3. The blame is on Mark KorvenThe audio team consists of seasoned music producers and composers. They have been producing music for various needs for artists, advertisements, video game scoring, and even fashion shows since forever. Working across so many genres and mediums keeps them constantly exposed to a wide range of working styles and figures in the music industry, including those outside the gaming and pop music horizons. Constantly producing music for horror games sparked an idea to make something different. And of course, Mark Korven is on their radar so closely. Korven is a film and TV composer best known for his work on The Witch. He has his own acoustic box called The Apprehension Engine built by Iuthier Tony. The engine is specifically designed to produce unsettling, eerie, atonal, and gritty textures that conventional musical instruments can’t exactly produce....Read full article on Community Announcements (lattezest)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog #04 - Environment Concept & Design Pt. 1: The Horror that Lives in Spaces
Greetings, fellow keepers of the dark! We meet again! In the last few updates, we’ve hinted (pretty obviously) that investigations will play a big role in DreadOut 3. And it turns out, when we started thinking about how investigations would work, we also started thinking about the spaces that would surround them. When we talk about horror, most of the attention usually immediately turns to what’s or what lurks within the place. Because in many cases, the sense of unease, unsettling, doesn't just come from what we are searching for. Sometimes we think the places we go to feel wrong even before anything happens. And that’s what we want to capture. Claustrophobia is CulturalWe find how interesting a space can be, especially in horror games or films. The uncomfortable feeling won't always come from a place full of splattered blood, bones, bodies, or demonic ritual altars that would make you want to step out of there instantly. It can also be created from a space that’s too large, empty, or silent. Or conversely, from a cramped space that restricts movements and feels stuffy even through a screen. When building various environments for DreadOut 3, we played with spaces that are close and feel oppressive: narrow alleys, dead-end small streets, small rooms that make it difficult to see what’s around the next corner. Much of this inspiration comes from environments and cultures that are quite close to our daily lives—which, honestly, is just what DreadOut always has been. Out of something so ordinary, we want to create something that’s completely the opposite. We think there's something not-so-pleasant about a space that feels way too close and narrow. So, when we built the environments, we asked ourselves how we want the players to feel when they're in a certain space we create. But for the record, of course, claustrophobic is one concept. We believe that discomfort doesn’t always come from confined spaces. So, there will be a mix of many other things that will build the wh...Read full article on Community Announcements (lattezest)Community & EventsOfficial
