New Biome: Prehistoric Chaos (Featuring… Aliens?)

We wanted to build a totally different world for Trackastrophe. We already had a mushroom world and an underwater world, but we really wanted something more exotic: weird plants, unexpected colors, and a completely different mood.At first, we fully went overboard with a full-on alien planet… but we couldn’t land on the perfect color palette, so we toned it down a bit (and kept it on planet Earth, lol). That’s when the idea of a prehistoric biome came naturally! Exotic plants, volcanoes, big “lost world” vibes… we were so hyped.Characters: Cavemen… and Researchers From SpaceSince the biome was taking shape, choosing characters was pretty straightforward: prehistoric characters for a prehistoric biome.Except the alien idea was still living rent-free in our heads, so we decided to add aliens anyway, as characters inside the biome. Like little researchers coming to study the planet and its weird lifeforms. We thought the interactions between prehistoric locals and awkward space nerds could be really funny. Do you think they’d become friends?I had a blast designing the characters for this biome. I was truly in the flow and so many designs came to life. In the end, we chose two characters (we couldn’t add more because of budget). My favorite is the pigtailed woman on the lower page, hehe. What’s yours?Plants & Assets: The Biggest Biome So FarThe plants were also a joy to draw. I loved their curves and the way they “move” on the page, very wiggly and very alive. The prehistoric biome actually contains the most assets out of all our biomes so far. It was a real challenge to balance the colors across all those elements, but I think we managed to make it feel rich without becoming a visual mess.Mechanics… (Help)Now, about the mechanics… I’m going to keep speaking as the concept artist here: I understand approximately 0% of what’s happening in this biome. I genuinely thought, “Wow… my game designer is insane.” But I’ll try to explain them anyway. Wish me luck. The PortalsPortals...

Devlog: Mechanics and Lore Behind Jumpers and Tunnels

MechanicsAt the very beginning, we only had the movement tiles… and honestly, it felt a bit BORING. We needed more mechanics to make the puzzles richer, so we quickly agreed on adding two: the Jumper and the Tunnel! Both are easy to understand:The Jumper makes the train (and its wagons) jump, letting you clear obstacles (mostly cliffs.)The Tunnel instantly transports you from point A to point B.We were super inspired during the early art direction phase, so the designs for both mechanics landed surprisingly fast. They looked good almost right away.On paper, these mechanics seem simple, but you’d be surprised how complex a puzzle can become with just these two additions !Out of all our mechanics, these are probably our favorites (at least my favorites ?). They’re adorable, and the sound effects are so satisfying. I especially love levels that use a lot of jumpers… because it’s just boing boing boing boing… yeah. Perfect. The JumperBasically, he’s an angry little guy who doesn’t like being jumped on (understandable). At first, he was just a face on the ground that would launch the train using his tongue… but it looked a bit… suspicious, lmao.So I kept the same expressions and put them on a Diglett-like shape instead. That worked way better! Then we added a star on his head to emphasize the “target” vibe. He passed the validation step pretty easily, I added a few more color variations, and voilà done!Red lets you jump over 1 tileBlue lets you jump over 2 tilesOrange lets you jump over 3 tilesThe TunnelHonestly, I have no idea what these things are, lol.We needed tunnels, and since our art direction was already leaning goofy, my brain immediately went: “Ah yes… mouth.” So I drew these weird, fish-like heads popping out of the ground, swallowing the train, and then spitting it out somewhere else. They’re simple, but they work so well.I also love how round and silly they are. LoreWriting lore for a puzzle game like Trackastrophe is.. harder than it sounds. The game is mostly ...
