Navigate crumbling megastructures, luring digital world threats to their doom with traps and grenades. Experience the tension of a single-player first-person shooter from Acellular.

About this game

Become an uncompliant process and fight off the corrupted digital zombies that haunt the crumbling halls of a dying digital world.

Technically a first-person shooter (it's in first person and you shoot things), The Corruption is in feel really a bit more like a liminal or backrooms game, except that you usually also have a grenade launcher to fight zombie-like enemies, instead of always running. Expect crumbling megastructures, bouts of intense combat, unexplained stories, some puzzling and platforming, sometimes meandering maps, and a little glitched Beethoven on your way to four possible endings.

Generally about 4-5 hours long, more to find every secret.

Explore

Generations of updates have corrupted the inhabitants and structures of an dying digital world. Uncover what remains through the messages left for you by those few processes that still survive in the data, while exploring surreal spaces inspired by backrooms, vaporwave and De Chirico.

Destroy

Fight fast-moving zealots and tanky partisans with traps, the Process Termination Grenade Launcher, and well-timed cascading explosions that rip through corrupted structures. But beware, sometimes the system may take away your Process Termination Grenade Launcher, leaving you with only to your wits to escape.

Ascend

It was supposed to be a digital sanctuary. It was supposed to be an escape from the external world. It was supposed to be impossible to degrade its digital perfection... Is it even possible to escape?

    Update v1.0.3 Patch Notes

Hello again, back with just a few more bug fixes bringing The Corruption to v1.0.3. Changes: General: - Fixed the removable box explosion left behind after killing fast (slab) zealots so that it is consistent with other zealot "corpses" (meaning you can now walk through as it shrinks without dying). - Improved density of purple "physics eater" autocells. - Fix for a rare black-screen startup freeze on some machines, apparently caused by loading user settings in the game instance init right at startup. Map Specific: - Improved the consistency of cascades for killing the farthest pillar functionary in i893-mainframe-r02. - Removed an unneeded interaction tooltip from a button in i892-lighthouse-r03. - Fixed a missing stair mesh in central save area of i891-thegate-r02. - Fixed an unintended hole in some stairs in i892-court-r04. As usual, if you have any more bugs please send them my way using the form in game or to bugs@acellulargames.com (especially if you're still sometimes getting that startup freeze please send me your system's specs and driver version if you can. The fix is just a delay on loading some settings, which worked on the one machine I have that had the issue, and no-one else I asked had the issue to begin with, but if someone's still sometimes getting the freeze I'd like to know since its so inconsistent even on the same machine.)

    Price Drop + v1.0.2 Update

Hello from developer Michael Tuck. I think it's consensus that I set the initial price a little too high for this game. Fault of too many comparisons to other games that aren't as indie as The Corruption, along with overestimating the length a bit. I think the new price better reflects that most people finish the game in about 4-5 hours, and that the game is a somewhat strange thing, with niche appeal for people who don't mind occasionally getting a little lost in their first-person games so long as the environments are unique. If you like both FPSs and backrooms games (like I do), I think this might be for you. I know the niche is out there: Steam's stats say that a few players have spent 30+ hours exploring, which is more than I ever expected anyone to spend in the game. Thanks to everyone who was willing to give the game a shot at the original price! Additionally, there's a minor update out now with few bug fixes and changes that bring the game to v1.0.2: - "Retro" (low settings) outline effect now fades out at distance. - Game now defaults to 70% volume on first play. - Increased the volume of the bed (looping ambient sound) in some soundscapes. - Minor light-shaft appearance improvements in i891-museum, i892-canyons (sunset only) and i892-court. - Fixed bugged deaths on kill-lines in the closing fall of f897011-refresh. - Removed errant invisible wall in f897011-refresh. - Fixed skylight dimmer continually cycling between light and dark after switching from low/medium to high/epic global illumination while in game. - Fixed soundscape bounds in i892-canyons' grievance communion room.

    Update Notes v1.0.1

A summary of post release bug fixes and changes that together now bring The Corruption to v1.0.1: Gameplay: - Walk toggle added (must be enabled in settings) - Changed i891-thegate so players can see the exit before the button that opens it - Made i892-canyons alt-route trick shot a little less tricky - Properly gated upper islands tower route so you must always pick up the grenade launcher first - Moved final save point in i893-recluse Fixes for: - Missing wall in i892-terminal start area - Floppy disk messages self-deleting at start in i891-museum, i892-canyons, and i891-islands - Floppy disk messages freezing inside "blocker" automata - Cables on hanging lights causing shadowing issues when swinging - Tool tips showing for invisible dev-only grenade launchers - Phone calls restarting on world changes despite still having the same message - More consistent pickup of small physics objects close to player (but kept mattress surfing because people enjoy it) - Homunculus not releasing enough minions on second stage - Missing sound on destroyer ending - Physics objects getting stuck on functionary collision box - Missing spawner link in admin basement - Can fall through the floor at Homunculus save point - Pickup tooltip not always showing for grenade launcher in f897011-refresh - Falling respawn not working when reloading the save after getting the destroyer ending - Typos in subtitles and floppy-disk messages - Performance improvements with level instances and merged meshes in i891-islands and i892-terminal That covers almost all the bugs I'm currently aware of. Hesitated to make post-release gameplay changes (I come from a time when the released game was what it was and that was it), but they're very minor. Fixes will continue based on bug reports, but there will be no more gameplay changes. Thanks to everyone who's tried the game so far!
