About this game

GAMEPLAY

Overworld

If you’ve ever played Mario & Luigi, you’ll feel right at home here. Explore the overworld as Jeff and Crackhead, conquering top-down platforming challenges and solving clever puzzles using their unique abilities. Secret paths and traps lie in wait at every turn—will you uncover hidden treasures or trigger chaos? The goal is simple: find the exit in each area while encountering a colorful cast of nonsensical monsters. Beware—bumping into them launches you into a battle!

Battles

This isn’t your typical turn-based RPG. Imagine the perfect fusion of strategy and action—fast-paced, simple to learn, and ridiculously fun.

While you wait for your turn to attack, enter Defense Mode, where you can freely move around a dedicated area. Dodge oncoming attacks, charge a parry move, or collect yellow orbs that speed up your attack timer. Timing is everything here.

When your timer is full, switch to Action Mode to unleash your skills. Choose between using items, quick attacks, or powerful character-specific abilities. But be careful—your opponent’s timer is ticking too. Mistime your strike, and you might get countered!

Once Crackhead joins your party, you can pull off devastating combos by chaining your attacks in quick succession. Pro tip: finish your combos with your strongest move to maximize damage!

STORY

After Jeff accidentally opens a portal to another dimension, chaos ensues. Jeff, Crackhead, and possibly the rest of the country get sucked into a bizarre world where time and space are completely scrambled.

The adventure kicks off with Jeff waking up in a mysterious forest. His day doesn’t improve when he meets Jerry, a strange (and not entirely helpful) guide who vaguely explains the situation. With little choice, Jeff sets out northward, battling oddball monsters and searching for his friends. What lies ahead is the adventure of a lifetime in a world unlike anything he’s ever known.

CONTROLS

Seamlessly switch between Jeff and Crackhead using their dedicated buttons for precision gameplay.

Overworld Controls:

  • Jeff: X and Y buttons

  • Crackhead: A and B buttons

  • Abilities: Left action button to use; triggers to swap abilities

  • Jump: Right action button

  • Pause Menu: Manage items, equipment, and quest hints

Battle Controls:

  • Defense Mode: Left action button (hold to charge parry)

  • Action Mode: Right action button for quick attacks, items, or special abilities

Mastering the controls is key to survival, but once you do, every encounter will feel fluid, fast, and incredibly satisfying.

    News on production

my initial idea was to be finished with this game by the end of September.  I've run into issues as of late with scope. the main thing slowing me down is drawing character animations, well that and only getting a few hours a day to work on anything after my full time shift and spending time with my family. so for the time being the game will be put on hold while i work on spriggin.  once this tool is complete i should be able to multiply production and make development a little less daunting.  may be a level editor in the works down the road as game maker studio 2s built in editor has been giving me nothing but problems. tons of bugs that seem to come out of nowhere all related to how game maker handles depth.  I'm putting the time in to learn godot while i get the sprite animator working at the moment.  so i may need to port the whole project to the new engine.  1 way or another ill get this game out for you guys. just wanted to let you know its not dead.   for those of you waiting patiently thanks for the support. If you'd like to help out in any way you can leave a comment. once we get things to a more finished state i may upload an early access build. this will need to be a complete and beatable state though . no game breaking bugs and all story in place. unless it could be used as a way to fund development further allowing me to hire some help.did release another game "shades of war" in the mean time just needed a break from this game. was hoping to get some funding from that game to put towards jeff and crackhead but as of its first month we aren't doing so well. have 1 other project in my pocket for the same reason. a game i finished a few years ago called "Tales of Acilain" planned on porting it to game maker studio 2 using everything Ive learned since its release to rework code ,controls , the lighting system and generally better everything lol. once the dusts settles on that we will see how it does on steam. if your curious about it you can check that out ...

took care of a majority of bugs

there was an issue with depth due to the top down platforming engine. managed to find a solution the demo should be entirely glitch free in that aspect.the leveling system had an issue of soft locking. went back and redid all the code should be running perfectly now. there was an issue with loose control sticks that would have the player auto move. simple changes in the values fixed that.still may be some issues while in co op battles surrounding the item menu. but runs well. found a few game breaking bugs made sure to fix those as well.

    local co-op added

MAJOR UPDATES this may be the first rpg to have local co-op like this. I'm not sure don't quote me on that. with the unique design of the battle system it seemed only natural the game have a co-op mode. may be some bugs. I haven't found any yet but seems to work great. let me know if you find any and ill get it fixed. once you've found crackhead you can toggle co-op in the options menu. a box will appear to set up the controller for player 2. may change visuals later not sure if I like it lol but it does the job. MINOR UPDATES bug fixes ui updates on the title screen you'll now get a box to connect your controller of choice. this is important for co-op and it added compatibility for most controllers. player 1 can still use the keyboard if you need to.
