Navigate through increasingly complex rounds in Passant, a 2025 indie strategy game where collecting powerful pieces and items is key to victory.

About this game

Passant is a chess roguelike, where the rules can be twisted and unique pieces can be used to change the game.

Build your board by earning powerful pieces with unique rules, items to change the tide of battle, and badges that can twist all the rules to deliver victory. Beat match after match of increasing difficulty until you can beat the final boss and become a grandmaster.

Expands on the rules of chess:

  • Unique pieces, such as the Archbishop, Dragon Knight, Dragon King and more!

  • Twists on traditional chess, such as Atomic Chess, Reflecting Bishops and Zombie Pawns.

  • Usable items that can give you an advantage, such as freezing a piece, demoting a piece to a pawn, or promoting one of yours to a queen!

There are also challenge modes and increasing levels of AI difficulty, so beginners and grandmasters alike can enjoy the game.

    Patch 1.1

Hi All,Patch 1.1 is here! This content update adds 7 new badges, 2 new challenge modes and adds cursed bosses to endless mode.7 new badgescursed bosses in endless mode2 new challenge modesactive challenges now show in the bottom rightFixed a bug where capturing the opponent's last piece when that piece is standing on a "Push the button" square softlocks the gameFixed a bug where undoing the promotion of a piece that was demoted to a pawn, did not return the piece to the pre-promotion typeQuite a few other bugs from the discord, but it's been a whileThe patch has been in beta testing for a couple of weeks over on discord, so I don't expect many bugs, but if you find anything please report over on discord or on this post. Also worth noting, you can turn off cursed bosses in endless mode in the settings. The game is intended to be played with them enabled, but as it's a significant jump in difficulty I've provided the option to disable them. All the best,Marc

    Upcoming Patch

Hi all! Apologies for the radio silence on Steam. I've still been intermitently active over on discord, but for the most part real life stuff has taken up most of my time. I've been fighting wrist issues, I quit my day job, and my son was born in November last year! Which has also unfortunately meant I've had less time to work on Passant, but I've been making progress all the same. I've also been working on a mobile version of the game, which is still on track to launch in the first half of 2026 and I should have further details on this over on discord hopefully soon™.I want to say thank you to everyone that's played the game, talked about it, left a review or joined the discord. I really appreciate it.Upcoming PatchI've been working on a content patch for the game to add:some badge ideas suggested by the community on discord (or inspired by those ideas)2 new challenge modifiersA more exciting endless modeBadgesThere will be 7 new badges coming to the game. Some of these new badges are really out there and have required quite a bit of work. An example of two of them is:a badge that lets you move your opponents pieces instead of your own on your turn (it does exclude kings and has a limit on how many times this can be done in a single match). Pairing it with a badge like slippy chess will allow you to throw some of your opponents pieces off the board.a badge that changes the undo button to a different ability - Pay $2 to upgrade a random friendly piece by 1-3 valueThis synergises with other upgrade badges as expectedChallenge ModifiersI've added 2 new modes. The first limits the pieces you see in the shop to standard chess pieces. The second removes all win conditions apart from getting a checkmate on your opponent. I also intend to rebalance the challenge levels given by each modifier.Endless ModeEndless mode will be getting new cursed bosses. These bosses will require you to take on a new challenge mode, sacrafice something or pay up. This will hopefully make endle...

    Patch v1.19

Apologies for the long gap between patches - It's mostly bug fixes and laying the groundwork for future patches. Made the game work for 4:3 resolutions If the player gets stalemated, but they have coins, it no longer counts as a stalemate and the coins are highlighted to show the player they can be used If the player gets checkmated, but they can remove checkmate with a coin, then it no longer counts as a checkmate and highlights the coin/s that can be used When a badge that in some way gives a piece a modifier is hovered, the explanation of the modifier is shown in the piece description box so the player can see what the effect does before purchase The AI now understands (and doesn't break the rules) if there's more than 1 courtesan on the board The AI now understands how their courtesan works (if they manage to get one via necromancy chess) You can now give yourself more than one courtesan badge in custom matches or setups the upgrade in the shop that converts a piece to a special piece, now only affects pieces without a positive modifier (it previously only had a greater chance but wasn't guaranteed to target non-special pieces) Boss badges are now displayed to the right of the round title so the unstable boss badge description does not cover the explanation of unstable The "Kill all non-king pieces" win condition now works when the opponent has more than one king, without taking them down to a single king Added a version number to the main menu The victory screen for scenarios, now says the correct scenario (previously this was off by 1 due to an indexing issue) Scenario 2 did not correctly set the egg badges to $10 at game start (it now does) Fixed a bug where you were given an incorrect move to remove check with a courtesan, if the piece causing check is a dragon king The en-passant square is now reset when using a coin. There was a small bug where the enemy could accidentally en-passant themselves... Fixed an issue where ice badges wouldn't appear in the shop...
