About this game

Accompany Kozomo in this pointless life

Kozomo is a young man in his late teens, who has spent most of his youth either asleep or escaping to the woods. Despite his and his family’s wealth and reputation, Kozomo finds no joy in life, often neglecting even the simplest of duties like eating. To those around him, his behavior is not just baffling but unsettling. Some people see his detachment as a sign of madness or moral weakness. And some believe that there is a smoldering ember inside him, one day that will raise him up again.

Solve a variety of puzzles

Kozomo: The Smoldering Ember is a platformer game where you'll have to think so often to solve the puzzles blocking your way. The game usually introduces new elements or expects from you to discover new interactions between already introduced elements in some clever ways. This game is not a hardcore puzzle experience, but it also will not be a piece of cake.

Explore your firepowers

Witness Kozomo's discovery of his sorcery powers. Will this powers be able to grant him the life purpose he's lacking? Will he use those for the good, or will the power poison him? Make use of Kozomo's new firepowers to solve puzzles in different ways and find out the uncertain fate of Kozomo.

What to expect?

KOZOMO: The Smoldering Ember is a 5-hour journey that blends platforming and puzzle-solving in equal measure, with over 750 lines of dialogue that shape its world. You'll spend about 10% of your time experiencing the story through dialogue, 40% navigating precise platforming challenges, and the remaining 40% unraveling intricate puzzles. While the game includes attacks and even a final boss encounter, it isn't an action-focused experience. The opening hour is puzzle-free, giving you space to learn the controls and mechanics before the deeper challenges begin.

Kozomo: The Smoldering Ember | Development Story

The Long Journey of Kozomo: From 2016 to ReleaseKozomo has been with me for a long time, in one form or another. What finally became The Smoldering Ember started back in 2021 as a small project I thought I could finish in just a few months. I had a plan: design it in May, start development in June, and release it by the end of the year. Instead, it turned into a four-year journey full of pauses, changes, burnout, and eventual release in April 2025. It wasn’t smooth, it wasn’t glamorous, and honestly, it wasn’t very profitable—but it was real, and it stayed with me through some of the hardest years of my life. This is the story of how Kozomo came to be.2021 – The BeginningIn May 2021, I began designing the game which didn't have the name The Smoldering Ember. By June, real development had started. My goal was simple: finish the game by September and release it around November. My main intention was to finish and release a game before I lost the chance. It was my last year of high school, and I wanted to complete something meaningful before being swept up in exams and university preparations. I was trying to develop my own games since i was twelve but in the end all of those games would be put aside. This had to be done before I was forced to study, which I didn't want to do or care about anyway.I chose a main character which was designed five or six years before the development of this game. And then i decided to make a puzzle-platformer, because it seemed to me the easiest genre to generate content for it. I wouldn't have to worry about polishing the feel of an action game, balancing a strategy game, writing hundreds of pages of story for a role-playing game, or designing vast worlds. Just design a couple mechanics, and design levels using innovative interactions between those mechanics.Fortunately, things moved fast at first. By September, I had finished almost all the mechanics and most of the art. But then it reality hit: the school started, and I had to focus on ...
