About this game

The Classic Card Battler

Manacaster is a streamlined, balanced deckbuilder where you destroy opponents with monsters & magic spells. Explore the city map in Adventure mode, practice against AI, or challenge a player in PVP. No mana screw, power creep, or micro-transactions.

"One of the best-balanced strategy games I’ve ever played."

  • Clash Royale world champion, Thunderstruck

"This already looks incredible. Very interesting.”

  • SPIEL Essen Livestream Host, Brettman

"True to its roots as a classic card-battler."

  • Legend‑Ranked Hearthstone Player, PowerLaws

Our objective as designers was to build a system that rewards intelligent strategy & and clever tactics, not good luck.  There are game modes for the casual, the competitive, and the solo enthusiast, all of which benefit from being incredibly well-balanced.

Tight, Mathematical Game Balance

The Power and Mana Cost of every single card and ability in Manacaster is carefully calibrated according to a strict mathematical algorithm, leading to intense battles that keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you demanding a rematch.

This balance system is what allows us to add new cards without making up new rules or risking power-creep.  Significant buffs and nerfs are applied to the underlying abilities that make up cards, not the cards themselves.  This means no more "my favorite card got banned".

Manacaster turns the one-of-a-card restriction into a mechanic that encourages diversity in deckbuilding.  Since each deck in Manacaster contains 50 unique cards, no duplicates, players are encouraged to "dig deep"  when looking for "that perfect 50th card".

With 800 cards available to deck builders, finding the right tool for the job is only a few filters away.

If you don't want to browse through all the cards, try Draft Mode where you'll compete against our AI as you see 14 bundles of 9 cards and pick from them to build your decks.

You can also just pick a pre-made deck to play; they're designed to teach you how to play the game and they use powerful cards.  No watered-down preconstructed decks.  Good, tight strategies that demonstrate actual synergy!

The Depth is in the Details

The rules and keywords in Manacaster are as simple as possible, but don't mistake simple for shallow.  Once you start chaining together keywords like Rally, Focus, Twinstrike and Heavy, you'll realize that this game is anything but simple, and soon enough you'll be opening up the deck builder to try constructing your own.

To ensure player skill is always rewarded more than luck, we've made some changes to the typical card-battle rulesets.  Every rule exists to minimize ( but not eliminate! ) randomness in situations where it's just more fun to give the players choice and agency!

Life Points as Resource

As you see below, life points are spent ( and gained ) like a resource.  Paying life helps unlock special abilities and can reduce the mana cost of Action cards.

Risk...reward...

Standalone Mana Deck

Players get to pick their mana card each turn.  Single-color mana cards can be used right away. Dual-color mana enter tapped unless you pay 1 life.  Triple-color mana enter tapped unless you pay 2 life.  Build your mana deck before the game and enjoy deploying your Units and Actions on-curve.

Opening Hand Draft ( aka Mulligan System )

You are given 14 cards from your 50-card deck from which you must compose your opening hand of 7 cards, but here's the neat part; you don't have to keep any of them, and you can cheat by keeping 8!  No more mulligan'ing to oblivion.  You'll always start with at least 7 cards in hand, every game, no matter what.

Manacaster has a variety of game modes that allow players to enjoy the game in whatever format they find most comfortable.   Some players love the thrill of outplaying a live human opponent, while others prefer to enjoy solo campaign modes.  Here are some of the modes you can play in Manacaster.

Explore the city map in Adventure Mode

Select from one of six Elemental nodes to begin your path through the map.  Your opponent will be drawn from a pool of decks of the node's Element.  After defeating your first Elemental node, you can move on to the more difficult Hybrid nodes, which represent the fusion of two Elements.

The inner ring of Hybrid nodes are more difficult than the pure Elemental nodes, but for a real challenge ( and to unlock the best Equipment ), you need to attack the outer ring of Hybrid nodes, which are significantly harder than your first pure Elemental encounters.

The only way to unlock the first Hybrid Level 2 node is to clear its associated Level 1 node.  Once you have defeated your first Hybrid Level 2 node, you can "backdoor" into other Hybrid 2 nodes, bypassing Level 1 nodes if you want that extra challenge.

Practice against AI

If you don't want to jump into the city map right away, you can pick up a pre-made deck and practice against the AI.  Once you're comfortable with the basics, you're free to build your own decks too.

Our AI is challenging but not unbeatable, and will give you a great understanding of how to play with, and against, various types of opponents.

From day one, Manacaster was intentionally designed and engineered to be easy for an AI to play.  If you want the details on that, join our Discord and we'll be glad to tell you more.

Challenge a player in PVP

There's a reason that world-champion caliber players call it "the most balanced card game they've ever played."  Games are often decided by one life point, one mana, or one card.  Yes, it is really that well-balanced.  All tournament-legal cards are unlocked in PVP mode.  No grinding just to play Arena; go battle on day one.

Prove you are superior.  Prove you are better.  Enter the Arena.

Two Ways to Build a Deck

In most game modes, you can select the type of Deck Construction method you'd like to use for the challenge.  Your opponent will be subject to the same rules, and the rewards of certain things ( like Elemental Nodes ) may change depending on which mode you select.

Constructed Mode: Select 50 Units and/or Actions, 13 Mana, and battle!   The typical "build-then-battle" mode where each player brings the deck of their choice.  Competitive players can test their skill in ranked ladder mode.

Draft Mode: Build your deck card-by-card while denying your opponent what they need to build theirs!   A cleverly modified snake-draft pick sequence keeps tensions high, and you can "Burn" cards to spite your opponent and get a random reward.  Supports ladder mode.

Free Demo Available

Manacaster might be your next favorite game, but you'll never know until you try it.

The free demo has no time limit nor usage limit, so you can play as much as you wish before buying.  You can also apply to join the Closed Playtest, which is free as well,  in exchange for feedback :)

Go install our free demo to make sure it runs on your device, step thru the tutorial, and if you like what you see, go buy the full game.

If you're still here, all the way at the bottom of this page, you probably already know that Manacaster is your kind of game.

That big green "Buy" button is ready for you.  Let's do this.

Free DLC: 24 New Cards supporting swarm & rush strategies!

As always, new cards are automatically added to your collection. We do not make any money from releasing new cards. We do it because it is what ensures the game remains awesome. Our recent content release will give our players 24 new cards to work with, and it will also explain how and why we decide to release new cards. Let's take a quick tour of the new tools in your arsenal. This content patch is like a miniature expansion set, fully focused on providing more tools for "swarm" strategies to fully express their brutality. We already had some support, but a quick dive into the deck builder left some of us wanting more tools, especially in the early game where swarm decks should be able to press their advantage fully. The most versatile tools added are these one-sided buffs. They're cheap and they add up fast. Select the one(s) that play best with your keywords, such as the ATK buffs on Twinstrike Units, DEF buffs on Riposte Units. For maximum flexibility, check out the two "Modal" cards at the bottom. These "select an option" cards typically cost a bit more mana but fuse two cards into one. Pick the side that fits the situation best!

Manacaster Post-Launch MEGA-PATCH! Adventure Mode & Shop Fully Enabled

Thank you to everyone who wishlisted and bought Manacaster during Launch Week! It's been so encouraging to see our wish list count increasing after launch, which means that you, the players, understand what we built, and why. Many of you have communicated to us that you're waiting to see the game evolve during Early Access, so today's gigantic patch notes represent our first step towards showing you Manacaster's evolution. Warning: Wall of Text Ahead. As we detailed in our launch announcement, Early Access games should be considered "buggy until proven otherwise", and I am proud to announce our prediction was correct! Manacaster indeed has bugs! In all seriousness, we really appreciate all the bug reports, even the ones that turned out to be "user error". Even those tiny reports provide a lot of information for us to fine-tune our user interface. The quantity of bugs was not particularly large, nor were they particularly severe. Few, if any, were game-breaking. This is consistent with our expectations that we set before launch, and we're glad to say that the level of bugginess is quite manageable. Most of the things detailed in these patch notes are actually feature additions, upgrades, or slight quality of life adjustments ( which we believe are as important as bugs )Depending on when you're reading this, our first major post-launch patch may already be live ( 3.2.3 ) on the main server. We'll post detailed patch notes as usual, so provided below is a summary of the most important changes.NOTE: Many of these changes can be previewed on our PTR ( playtest realm ) before going "live". If you want playtest realm access, please join Discord and we'll set you up!Combined Patch Summary: 3.2.2/.3/.4 We have combined three patches into a single patch to the "live" game. If you are on the playtest servers, you will have seen each of these patches deployed individually for stability testing. If you are on the live game, this will be represented as one patch download.Major Fix...

Early Access Launch: What to expect on Day One of Manacaster

So it's launch week, and you're looking at that big "BUY NOW" button and that juicy 20% discount ( valid thru September 10th! ) and you notice, "hey, this game is in Early Access, does that mean it's not really ready?" The answer depends on the game and the studio, but our team considers Early Access to be as important as a full Version One launch. This means our core gameplay loop and the supporting gameplay loops around it need to be robust, mostly bug-free, and they need to represent a significant amount of the "Manacaster Experience".Below, we're going to explain what you'll be able to do right away, and what's still in the pipeline for release post-Early Access launch. In short, you can expect a very deep and robust game that's got some roughness around the edges, but it's solid where it matters most.Let's start with the thing for which Early Access is somewhat notorious; there will be bugs. There will be hotfixes, usually same-day. Use the in-game bug report button and you can expect a patch within 24 hours or less. This is typical of Early Access games, especially strategy games that require perfect enforcement of the rulebook. We've QA tested as many interactions as reasonably possible, but there will always be corner cases in a game of this depth. We ask you to be patient with bugs you encounter and to report them immediately. The same should be considered true for UI/UX issues. We rely on your feedback to understand when something feels janky, confusing, or incomplete. Just like bugs, use the in game report to share your thoughts. We have a dedicated pipeline for integrating player feedback into the game and you can typically expect improvements to come along frequently. With those two expectations set, lets move on to the fun stuff; what you'll be able to do immediately upon Early Access launch. What's Ready Now Almost Every PVP & PV-AI Game Mode:Battle a random human opponent with constructed decks.Draft against a human opponent or AISend a duel request t...
