Sneak through ever-changing dungeons to steal valuable treasures in Don't Wake the Beast. Outsmart fierce enemies and solve intricate puzzles while evading traps, but be cautious—each stolen item heightens the danger of your escape.

About this game

Don't Wake the Beast is a roguelite stealth game where you play as a treasure hunter sneaking through randomly generated dungeons guarded by powerful beasts. Your goal is to steal their most precious treasures, but the path is filled with dangers. Each location consists of three levels full of enemies, traps, and environmental puzzles that require clever use of your grappling hook to open new pathways and avoid threats.

In Don't Wake the Beast, balancing risk and reward is key. Collect valuables on your journey, but beware—every item you pick up has weight and generates noise, which can draw the attention of enemies and make your escape more difficult. Each of the four unique biomes you’ll explore offers distinct challenges and mechanics, so be prepared for diverse threats.

After stealing the main treasure from each vault, you’ll face an intense escape back through the same path, now filled with new traps and obstacles to challenge your way out.

Will you escape with the loot before the beast catches up to you? With each run, you gain more experience, and the money you earn can be spent on upgrading your character and equipment, giving you better chances in future runs. Don't Wake the Beast combines dynamic stealth gameplay, puzzle elements, and thrilling challenges, ensuring that every playthrough is unique.

Key features:

Dynamic Risk/Reward Gameplay:
Every treasure you collect adds to your wealth, but also increases your weight and noise, making your escape harder. Each decision matters—will you risk it all for the ultimate prize?

Grappling Hook Mechanics:
Use your trusty grappling hook to interact with the environment, solve puzzles, and avoid traps. This unique tool gives you creative freedom to navigate procedurally generated dungeons and evade enemies in exciting ways.

Thrilling Post-Treasure Escape:
After stealing the main treasure, you must retrace your steps through the dungeon—but this time, the path is filled with new traps and dangers, creating a heart-pounding race to safety in every run.

Getting In Was the Easy Part - The Escape

You made it through the dungeon. You avoided the traps, slipped past the enemies and finally reached the Treasury. Then the Beast wakes up…Now you have to go all the way back. The Way In Becomes the Way OutDuring the Escape, you return through the same rooms you explored on your way to the Treasury - only this time, you're going in the opposite direction, with a Beast chasing you.And the dungeon you remember isn't necessarily the dungeon you're going to escape through. Each biome has a different Beast with its own attacks, so what you're running from - and what you'll have to deal with on the way out - changes depending on where you are. Enemies enter their Alarm state, turning previously manageable encounters into bullet hell. Special Beast Traps placed throughout the rooms also activate during the Escape, introducing hazards that weren't there on your first visit.Getting to the treasure was only half of the journey. Prepare Your Escape Before It BeginsThe good news is that you don't have to wait for the Beast to wake up before thinking about your escape. While exploring, you'll find opportunities to prepare the route back. You might unlock an easier path, disable a troublesome trap or carefully cross a fragile floor in a way that leaves yourself a way back later.Enemies are another problem worth thinking about in advance. During the Escape, they become much more dangerous, so if you have an opportunity to eliminate one before reaching the Treasury - perhaps by using a nearby trap - doing so might make your return journey a little less chaotic. The same applies to your resources. That Life Fruit or Speed Potion might help you right now... but it could be much more valuable when something much bigger is running after you. The Beast Changes EverythingOf course, no amount of preparation can guarantee that everything will go according to plan. The Beast doesn't politely follow the path behind you. As it charges through the dungeon, it destroys terrain, objects and mechanism...

    Every Sound Matters

The dungeon is quiet. Almost too quiet. You carefully make your way through the corridors, watching the enemies patrol their territory. You wait for the right moment to move, trying to stay out of sight. Then you step on a pile of Coins.Clink.It may seem like a small sound, but in Don't Wake the Beast, even the smallest noise can change what happens next. Sound Can Give You AwayNoise is an important part of stealth. Different actions create different amounts of noise and can reach enemies from different distances. Walking normally creates only a very small sound, while opening a chest or a door creates medium noise. Stepping on coins or destroying a fragile decoration is much louder, and some actions - such as using an explosive charge with the grappling hook - can make a very loud sound. But noise isn't always something you want to avoid. Sometimes, making the right sound is exactly what the dungeon expects from you. Some mechanisms can be triggered by different types of switches, activating or deactivating connected traps and other mechanics. This means that sound isn’t only something to fear - it can also be part of how you interact with the dungeon. When an enemy hears something nearby, it stops and turns its field of vision towards the source. If the sound comes from somewhere outside its vision, the enemy can move to investigate it. But noise doesn't always have to be a mistake. Destructible decorations can be used as distractions, letting you deliberately draw an enemy's attention away from you. The Heavier You Are, The Harder It GetsSound also becomes more dangerous when you’re carrying a lot of treasure. As your weight increases, so does the noise generated by walking. At higher Weight Levels, even moving through the dungeon can become more noticeable, making it harder to stay undetected. Carrying more treasure also puts a greater strain on your stamina. The heavier your backpack gets, the more stamina you consume, making movement and actions that rely on it ...

Dungeons Full of Secrets - How Randomization Changes Every Run

One of our main goals with Don’t Wake the Beast was simple: no two dungeon runs should ever feel the same. That’s why the dungeon is built around layered randomization - both on a large structural level and in small details you notice while exploring. Big Changes: Dungeon LayoutEach expedition generates a new dungeon structure. This includes:Room and corridor placementSecret passagesRoom types and their roles Sometimes you’ll get open routes with multiple choices. Other times the dungeon forces you through tight, dangerous sections. This keeps exploration unpredictable and prevents players from relying on memorized paths. Small Details That MatterInside the rooms, even more randomness kicks in:Bones placementDecorationsLoot types (spawn points stay the same, but items change)Interactive objectsStronger enemy variants, influenced by dungeon hostilitySome traps Some special interactive objects (e.g., lootable bags, jugs, sacks of flour)Items to purchase in the goblin shopThese small changes often have a big impact on how a run plays out. A room that felt safe before can suddenly become risky - or extremely rewarding. Quests and Dungeon EvolutionPlayers can also interact with the Explorer Gnomes through their quest line. You bring them various items found in the dungeon, and in one quest, you even have to carry an exceptionally heavy item into the dungeon! In return, they enhance dungeon generation in different ways - for example, adding new interesting objects like a fountain or upgrading services in the gnome shop. These quests add another layer of unpredictability and reward for exploration. Controlled ChaosWe don’t rely on pure randomness. Everything is balanced using handcrafted rules to keep difficulty fair and progression natural. Our goal is “controlled chaos”: unpredictable, tense, but never unfair.Don’t forget to follow better. publishing’s channels:🔷 X: https://x.com/betterpubpro🔷 FB: https://www.facebook.com/betterpubpro🔷 Discord: https://discord.gg/qYPKKX7Cb...

How We Crafted the Dungeons of Don’t Wake the Beast

When we started working on the dungeons in Don’t Wake the Beast, one of the first things we had to figure out was how the whole floor should feel from start to finish.Every room has its own purpose. Sometimes it introduces a small idea, sometimes it tests your movement, sometimes it asks you to sneak carefully past danger, and sometimes it simply gives you a moment to breathe before the next challenge. But the rooms also have to work together as one larger journey. You are not just clearing disconnected obstacles - you are making your way toward the treasure chamber, and eventually, you will need to escape.Because of that, our dungeons are intentionally quite linear. That word can sound negative when talking about level design, but for our game it made a lot of sense. The basic loop of Don’t Wake the Beast is built around going deeper into the dungeon, reaching the treasure, and then running back out. If the dungeon was too open, too twisted, or full of branching paths, the escape could easily become confusing or frustrating. We wanted the way back to feel tense and fast, not like the player is fighting the layout itself. So instead of making huge maze-like spaces, we focused on building a strong main path with good pacing. The player should understand where they are going, but still feel challenged by what happens along the way. Most rooms fall into two main categories: arcade rooms and stealth rooms. We place them carefully so the dungeon has a natural rhythm. A more demanding action room might be followed by a slower stealth section. A tense room might lead into something calmer. This helps us keep the player engaged without exhausting them too quickly. At the same time, the dungeon is not just one straight corridor. There are additional rooms branching off from the main path: special rooms, hidden rooms behind fragile walls, and other secrets for players who like to explore. The main route stays readable, but there is still space for curiosity and discovery. We also...
