About this game

This universe may be cold, but it is still three degrees warmer than absolute zero.

Cold Bed on Route is an equation-style rogue-lite adventure game.

Have you heard of The Cold Equations, the seminal 1950s sci-fi novella by Tom Godwin?

A spaceship flying at the edge of its weight limit, carrying cargo vital to saving many lives. An unexpected stowaway slips aboard.

If the stowaway stays, the ship will be too heavy to stay on course. The rescue mission will fail.

If the stowaway is ejected into space, they will, of course, die.

And yet—when the equation is clear, when the lives at stake are many—there’s only one logical outcome: sacrifice the one, save the many.

This is the central dilemma of The Cold Equations, and the foundation of the "equation story" genre it inspired.

Cold Bed on Route takes inspiration from that story and follows the same essential structure.

The setting is a spacecraft adrift in the cold vacuum of space. More seed than ship, it’s a Final Emergency Boat (FEB): ultra-small, ultra-light, and built for last-resort missions.

And of course, as any equation story demands—there is a stowaway.

In The Cold Equations, the stowaway was a fragile girl, sneaking aboard to see her brother.

But in Cold Bed on Route, the “girl” is something else entirely. She is a Doggy, an artificial human with beastlike ears to mark her as non-human. She has flesh, bones, and blood—but she is far stronger and far more intelligent than any ordinary person.

Work with her to search for and jettison any unnecessary items. Then compensate for the excess weight caused by bringing her aboard—a weight that is, well, a little more than it seems... quite a bit more, actually. Uh, how to put it... it’s, you know, really heavy.

And finally, prove that the universe hasn’t gone completely cold. Not yet.

Now then, pilot—it's your turn.

Announcing the 1st Anniversary of Cold Bed on Route on Steam!

Greetings. I hope you are all doing well as we approach the summer solstice.Today marks exactly one year since the Steam version of Cold Bed on Route was officially released. My core philosophy for this project has always been that those who support a game by purchasing it immediately at launch should never feel penalized or regretful. Because of this, I committed to keeping all discounts within the initial 10% launch-sale rate for the entire first year. Now that a full year has passed, this self-imposed restriction has been lifted. To celebrate, the game is available at its first-ever 20% discount (now 2.39$). I would be incredibly grateful if you took this opportunity to pick up the game.Additionally, while it is not part of the discount, the digital Artbook has been updated to Version 8. This update includes the newly added illustration of the full version of the Girl of Summer. Please note that it has been added to Chapter 6-1, rather than Chapter 2.We (if you are in Japan) are currently in a shifting season, caught between the sudden heat of the sun and the lingering chill of the rainy season. Please take good care of yourselves. Sincerely,Old Retina Museum

    Update v3.26

Update v3.26 is now live. This update addresses the following two points: 1. Fixed a bug where actions in the Side Story wouldn't execute properly, causing the game to softlock. In our previous v3.25 update in early March, we added a control guide image. Because it was a minor update, we let our guard down and failed to run a comprehensive check on the whole system. As it turns out, the Unity version had changed during that process. This caused some object assignments to unbind, which meant taking specific actions in the Side Story would fail to execute properly, preventing further game progress. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. If you were unable to complete the Side Story in v3.25 due to this issue, please give it another try with this v3.26 update. 2. Added hint dialogue to the final battle of the Side Story. While fixing the bug above, we realized that the gameplay itself might still feel a bit confusing (a "what am I even supposed to do?" kind of situation). To help follow up on this, we’ve added some hint dialogue. That said, it's not something you'll see under normal circumstances. It triggers after losing the final battle two or more times, replacing the standard defeat dialogue. Each subsequent loss will reveal a new hint, cycling through a loop that returns to the standard defeat dialogue on the fifth loss. Additionally, we have made minor text adjustments throughout the game.

    Update v3.25 – Linux Support

We have officially added Linux support in v3.25, specifically with Steam Deck users in mind. Please note that because I currently do not have a native Linux environment for testing, this support is being released in an experimental state. I cannot guarantee it is fully optimized or bug-free at this stage. If you encounter any issues, I would greatly appreciate it if you could report them in this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/3250010/discussions/0/598530063829318431 UI Update: Mouse IconsI previously removed the mouse icons from the top-right control guide because they didn't look quite right. However, I realized that without them, it might not be clear that mouse controls are supported. I have decided to bring them back starting with v3.25. Note for Windows Users:I am currently experiencing an upload error with the Windows version. I will push the update for Windows as soon as the issue is resolved.
