About this game

Do you remember Fury of the Furries? How about Lost Vikings? Commander Keen? And what about witty adventures like Simon the Sorcerer and Monkey Island? Do you enjoy traumatizing yourself by wallowing in nostalgia for old-school games from the '90s? Well, I sure do! Come, let's have some ale and share memories.

Implausible Tales is an adventure puzzle platformer that focuses more on the adventure and puzzle aspects, and less on the platforming. Though, you’ll still need to jump. In each level, you start with one of four imps and must use your wits to find crystals and unlock the others.

Each imp has unique abilities that help you solve puzzles and often deconstruct the level in the process. You’ll frequently need to backtrack and search for previously blocked passages. Each level contains several secrets that aren’t required to complete the game but offer quite a challenge if you want to discover them all.

The game tries to be funny, but you’ll be the judge of all the puns and fourth-wall breaks...

Features:

  • 15+ levels set in various environments

  • Gameplay combining adventure, platforming and puzzles

  • Charming visual style inspired by classic adventures

  • Soundtrack that lingers long after you stop playing

  • That retro game feel, wrapped in a modern engine with full gamepad support

  • Satire, puns, dad jokes, and other awful things

  • The Spanish Inquisition

    I just pressed the button

And the demo is out. Phew. It was a bit stressful, but what a journey! It seems like yesterday when I had the first idea about the game with four imps. And now anyone can play it. One level at least, which is part of the demo. Give it a try, let me know what you think! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45217948/7d3f2b8dbbafedc631d9ff07f0e6a062bc998fad.png There are still a few smaller features that I want to add, but now rest of the game is mostly level design and making pixel art. And writing jokes. https://store.steampowered.com/app/3628570/Implausible_Tales_Demo/

It’s the ’90s on your Steam Deck!

That's right! You will soon be able to play with your imps on Steam Deck. Who knew? I didn’t, as I don’t own one (yet!). Fortunately, quite a few testers got interested in the game, and several of them have the console. Since the game has full controller support, Steam Deck handled it with no problems. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45217948/b4927def36d406a440fc71d97ec3fcb972c48f5e.png That said, after several rounds of testing, the demo is almost here. Stay tuned...

    Extra nostalgia, anyone?

There’s always one more thing to add! I try to keep the scope in check (you know, to actually finish the game), but I was playing around with a CRT filter, and it turned out really cool. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45217948/44c8eddc03ad33e518b2b45178272edcf99cec26.png{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45217948/f64e5fe8745a4f1b4e436636577586693cb4d6ca.png Enlarge the bottom screenshot to actually see the CRT effect. It wasn’t part of the original concept, but leaning further into the retro aesthetic feels right. Honestly, I even prefer playtesting the game with this old monitor look now. Of course, you can toggle it on or off in the settings. I’m still debating if it should be on or off by default. Let me know what you think on my Discord server. Alright, back to work—gotta get that demo ready! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3227580/Implausible_Tales/

    Six months in making

I’ve been working on this for six months, though it feels much longer. It’s been the most fun I’ve had in years, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45217948/c4d9f7ab0581855678b92497c8fb7ee597b281cb.png At this point, the core of the game is done, as well as the majority of the graphic assets. Most of the remaining work is level design and polishing to make the gameplay silky smooth. So what’s next? Demo! The lovely, autumn-colored level Perilous Woods will be made into a public demo for everyone to try out. I’m expecting to have it ready in a few weeks—just as soon as I get more testers to play it and ensure there are no bugs or issues. Join my Discord server if you’re interested in testing! Cheers everyone! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3227580/Implausible_Tales/
