Construction on your demo has begun!

Well. You can probably guess what RIPPER is trying to do to you.As you've not doubt read in the tagline, we've begun work on the next RIPPER environment which see you placed in a slate quarry. ENTERING THE DARKNESSYou'll see our detective Sam Harlow in some of the shots - this isn't to imply any gameplay cameras (although we will have some lovely wideshots in some of our vistas), she's more there to help get a sense of scale when we're building out our environments.THE DEMOOur current focus is to get the whole team (we're 14 people), aligned around a demo we're putting together for you all. We don't have an estimated date for this yet - sInce we're self-publishing RIPPER, we want to take our time and get things right. We also want to have the game in a really good place before we start releasing demo content in case we need to make any design changes to help it feel consistent across the rest of the game as we iterate.Previously in RIPPER's development, outside of the trailer where we all came together to get the shots in place ready for the edit, we've mostly been spread across the project. In development there can be multiple blockers across departments so we've been trying to work in parallel ways to each other so no ones blocking too many other people to bring different aspects online that we needed to help define the scope of the game. We've also had a few people working on getting Dahlia View out onto consoles (for those of you waiting to pick it up, it's coming!), so this will be a great chance for everyone to focus on a specific section of the game. SILHOUETTED IN THE CAVEIt's always been a tough thing demo'ing our titles. Since you're reading this, you're probably into the narrative-type thrillers we love to design. It can be hard to immerse yourselves in the world and characters when you have a limited time with a demo. Although we know it can be best practice for demos to be around 20-30 mins long, I suspect we may want to give you a bit more than 30 mins...

    RIPPER profiled by Unreal Engine

Whether it was Ether One's development back in Unreal 3, The Occupation and Dahlia View in Unreal 4, to now using Unreal 5 to power RIPPER, we've always used the engine to develop our narrative-driven work in.We're a small team of 14 people working hard out of our UK studio and we wouldn't be able to deliver the types of experiences we design without standing on the shoulders of incredible Unreal developers before us. We sat down with the team at Unreal to chat more RIPPER which you can check out in the video profile below (with some sneaky new environments and details you didn't see in the trailer). We also sat down with the media team to complete a written interview for some extra tasty details which we've put a link for below: I AM RIPPER tears out its place as the Great British ThrillerIt's so fun and rewarding seeing everyone's excitement for the titles we're working on, thanks for keeping all the positive messages coming through and be sure to let us know what you'd like to hear more about so we can plan more updates to show you some more of the behind-the-scenes!

    Will you leave a trace?

We’re kicking off our Steam News updates for I AM RIPPER with something winter focused since a lot of game is set in the dead winter of the UK in 1988.Snow is such a large part of a game set in winter (especially one where you’re trying to track a killer) so we need to create the snow in a way that enhances the atmosphere and affects your gameplay experience.Leaving a traceWhen characters walk around in the snow; whether that’s you the player, people you’re working with, or maybe a suspect you want to follow, leaving footsteps behind not only grounds you in the world, but gives you a sense that the weather can affect any clues pertinent to your case. This video shows how our footstep system can react to multiple characters in the worldEven the darkest cases have moments of levityI AM RIPPER is a dark game. We want the true grittiness and realities of cases like this to be at the forefront of your game play experience. We don’t take these matters lightly and want to do justice to what it feels like to solve a case like this in real life.We try to design around features we take for granted in video games such as respawning at checkpoints or collectables for the sake of collectables. Instead we put focus on gameplay designed to respect your time as a player, which is one of our core design pillars when creating our games. We want you to be focused on everything surrounding your investigation into the Ripper. With that said, we love to juxtapose sections of the game where there can be moments of laughing & levity. We don’t want to give away too much there, but you can imagine the opportunities that snow presents..!Rolling snowballs is the most fun way to test physics!A focus on DetailWe love to focus on even the smallest details in our world. It’s the polish (which can be time consuming and complex to achieve) that we think really helps sell a unique vision to the gameplay. We're still a small team of 14 but these details matter a lot to us.Be sure to look at where the fe...
