Tend your post-apocalyptic garden and build self-regulating ecosystems in Skyfarm, an Indie Simulation game by Plaid Games. Connect with fellow rooftop gardeners for fresh content and growth.

About this game

Skyfarm is a cozy single-player 3D farming simulation set atop a post-apocalyptic urban rooftop, where you'll cultivate a garden using permaculture principles. As you nurture your rooftop oasis, you'll create self-regulating ecosystems that produce food and increase biodiversity, all while interacting with fellow rooftop gardeners to exchange materials and unlock new plants, zones, and garden elements.

It's been ten years since the great flood destroyed everything. The entire city is submerged, with water reaching up to the third floor, never receding. The famine that followed led to the rise of Skyfarms on the rooftops, producing just enough food for the city's survivors. You are unauthorized, tasked with working this garden using everything at your disposal. You receive food and necessities through various machines. Occasionally, a drone lands by the water tank, replacing the box with spare parts, new seeds, or seedlings. The analyzer guides you on how to tend the garden, while the converter tells you what to harvest. As you lean over the railing, you can hear the water far below in the fog and wonder what it will be like once you’ve earned your citizenship in the community below.

But you are not alone in this task. Together with a cute cat and a community of helpful Skyfarmers on other buildings, you can make the rooftop your home and create a cozy, beautiful garden.

Key Features

  • Permaculture Principles: Skyfarm embraces the principles of permaculture, a design philosophy centered on sustainability and self-sufficiency. These principles are woven into the gameplay, allowing you to:

    • Observe and Interact: Understand and work with natural ecosystems.

    • Catch and Store Energy: Efficiently use resources to avoid waste.

    • Obtain a Yield: Ensure your systems produce tangible benefits like food and water.

    • Apply Self-Regulation: Create adaptable, self-regulating systems.

    • Produce No Waste: Minimize waste by reusing and recycling.

    • Use and Value Diversity: Encourage biodiversity for resilience.

    • Creatively Respond to Change: Innovate and improve your garden through feedback.

  • Balance your garden ecosystem: Skyfarm offers a detailed gardening simulation where plants have specific growth conditions, seasonal cycles, and interactions with other species. Each plant has unique needs, and you'll need to carefully balance light, water, and soil conditions to ensure a healthy harvest.Your goal is to create a diverse and resilient ecosystem that produces the necessary harvests that you can exchange for localCoin. Start with a small patch of land and gradually expand your farm by mastering complex mechanics like soil regeneration, companion planting, and water management.

  • Sell your Harvest: Trade your harvests for localCoin, craft materials, and new plants. Respond to the needs of the high-rise community, and get rewarded with new building plans, materials and plants.

  • Crafting and Decorating: Make yourself at home in your flourishing garden oasis by crafting new garden elements and cute decorations.

  • Community: As you progress, you'll establish relationships with other Skyfarmers. Exchange knowledge, tools and plants and become a valuable member of the Skyfarmer community.

  • Increase Biodiversity and find new Species: Find as many different species as possible and find out how they fit into your garden’s ecosystem. Create new biomes to attract different species and exchange rare finds with the community. A journal, complete with hand-painted sketches and descriptions, helps you track your progress and expand your gardening knowledge.

  • Resource Management: Manage water, energy, and other resources wisely to keep your farm thriving. Utilize renewable resources and adapt to changing conditions to create a sustainable environment.

  • Companionship: Look after and befriend a cat and together, enjoy the beautiful environment you've created.

    Update December 2025

Dear Skyfarmers,A lot has happened since the last update, so I wanted to share a quick overview of where Skyfarm is at right now. Most importantly, there’s a new trailer that shows recent visual updates and gives a better sense of the world and its tone!Watch the new trailer here:And if you prefer video updates, here’s the latest devlogWorld & Level UpdatesOver the past weeks I’ve implemented a new level layout and added more detail to the surroundings of the farm. This includes new props, furniture and environmental elements that help the city feel more lived-in. Some of these items aren’t interactable yet, but the foundations for the crafting and blueprint systems are in place.I’ve also been experimenting with a new weather type: clear blue skies with low-hanging clouds drifting between buildings. It’s a lightweight solution performance-wise, and it adds a very different mood to the city.NPCs, Story & Systems PlanningAfter Gamescom and an intense development period leading up to it, I spent some time focusing on world-building, story and NPC concepts.Skyfarm’s city is imagined as a network of self-governed communities after the flood, all connected through rooftop farms. NPCs will interact with you mainly through a local network called Farmspace, where they post tasks, requests and stories. Relationships, friendships (and romance) are planned to grow through these interactions, unlocking new items, information and gameplay opportunities. This NPC/task system is one of the last big pieces missing for the vertical slice, and I’m very excited to properly start implementing it.Gamescom RecapI had the chance to show Skyfarm at Gamescom with the Swiss Games delegation. It was incredibly valuable for feedback, networking and meeting other developers working on similar themes. Exhausting, but absolutely worth it.What’s NextI’m working towards a demo, so the focus now is on implementing the last missing features, such as the NPC system, and doing another round of testing in ...
