About this game

Has your dog ever stared into the darkness, barking at something you couldn't see? Maybe they've growled at a quiet hallway in the dead of night or watched an empty corner of your ceiling, tracking something invisible with eerie focus.

As the family dog, it's your job to protect your loved ones from danger—especially from the kind they can't see. In The Good Dog: Chasing Shadows, step into the paws of a loyal dog defending its owners from paranormal entities.

In the Fetch game mode, you're tasked with venturing out into a desolate world to retrieve supplies your family needs to survive. Explore abandoned towns and decaying buildings while avoiding the terrifying entities that haunt the places you once called home. As the days pass, your job will become harder. Resources will spawn less often and farther apart, and your daily resource target will become more demanding, all while the dangers outside grow stronger.

Explore three large maps at launch, each with a unique selection of landmarks and weather conditions.

Use your keen sense of smell to search the area for tools. Dig up hidden items to help fight back against the paranormal. Bark at certain immaterial entities to disperse them, or at physical entities to draw their attention away from your family.

And if all else fails, use your teeth.

In the world of the Entities, however, even dogs need a helping hand. Utilize technology repurposed by your human companions to get the job done: flashlights to see better in the dark, a portable speaker to distract enemies, and even a robot dog companion to help you carry supplies.

With over twenty breeds to choose from, you can tailor your gameplay to your preferred style. Will you play as a small breed, perfect for slipping into tight spaces and evading danger, or a larger breed with more health and attack power to take on threats head-on? Will you prioritize a breed with high stamina, tracking capabilities, stealth, or something else entirely? Whatever your approach, there will be a breed that suits your playstyle.

    Early Access Patch 1.2.0

Hello again, everyone!Patch 1.2.0 releases on the default branch today, and kicks off a series of updates that aim to improve the game's Entities. In universe, the Entities have started to evolve in response to the growing resistance of dogs. Prepare to be tested!Spiders will now spawn in various sizes, with larger spiders having more health than smaller ones. The Spider can also spit a projectile of wormlike tentacles at the player, creating an area of effect that slows the player down if walked through. Banshees have also been updated, evolving beyond their early forms to fully harness the electricity that sparked within their clouds of distortion. These stronger Entities will now electrocute any dog that gets too close, slowing you down and injuring you momentarily—and make sure not to be holding a radio tower fuse when it happens!Beyond these changes, Entity spawn rates have increased across all difficulty levels. The Entity's evolution will continue over the following weeks leading up to Halloween, introducing more changes to existing Entities along the way, and even a new Entity type or two!Speaking of Halloween, I have a lot of fun plans in the works for a celebration of my favorite holiday. I think you all will enjoy it, so keep an eye out for updates about that soon! This update also includes a much needed upgrade regarding controller support. All menus and UI should now be accessible and navigable using only a controller! If you come across any menu that doesn't work with a gamepad, be sure to leave a report in-game, but it's already a lot better now than it used to be.As always, the full patch notes can be found below. Thank you for your continued support and patience! Early Access Patch 1.1.4

Hello again, everyone! We've got another small bug-fixing patch today. The main fix included in this patch is a fix for the Fallen Dog evidence spawning system. Before, there was a rare chance that evidence wouldn't spawn correctly. To put it simply, I discovered that this was happening in very rare instances where there was technically space for an object to spawn, but there was part of a static mesh directly above the spawn point. This edge case wasn't accounted for in my original code, and because of it, the old spawning method for the evidence would fail repeatedly. This should now be completely fixed, and you should hopefully never be unable to find evidence again!I've included a few other small fixes in this patch, which are all the most commonly mentioned ones from the in-game bug reporter. Keep using that feature to report issues! The full patch notes can be found below, as always. The next patch will more than likely be the Entity Overhaul, which was voted on by members of my Discord server. Be sure to join us there so you can take part in future votes!Early Access Patch 1.1.4BalancingFuse DispenserGreatly reduced time to spawn another fuseWraithSlightly reduced time it takes to kill with a regular flashlightFixes & Other ChangesMisc. Early Access Patch 1.1.3

Hello again, everyone! Today's patch is a smaller one that comes with some much needed fixes and changes. The main focus of this patch was a rework of the tutorial level. This has been an ongoing change, and it was nearly ready in time for Patch 1.1.2, but I decided to push it off a bit so I could focus on finishing the supplies overhaul. In many ways, the new tutorial level is the same as it always has been. Most of the playable content remains the same, save for a few small tweaks to the Fallen Dog section that should hopefully make it clear to new players what to expect from the Fetch game mode. Beyond this, pop-ups in the tutorial level look much better than before. For pop-ups in moments of high tension, such as when encountering the Entities, or for pop-ups in high volume areas like in the Home Base, the game will pause for a moment to allow the player to read before continuing. After playing through the tutorial a few times, I think that everything flows a lot smoother than before with fewer opportunities to accidentally miss important text. These changes will really only affect new players, but this was an important step in making the game more accessible. I also reworked how the tutorial works on the backend, so as I add more features in the future, I will be able to easily create new tutorial levels alongside the original one, each focusing on a new mechanic or game mode. Give the tutorial a go if you haven't yet! You might just learn something new.Otherwise, Patch 1.1.3 includes a few more changes, including updated collar models for the game's newest breeds and some important bug fixes. As always, the full patch notes can be found below.Thank you to everyone for your support and feedback. I'll see you all soon for Early Access Patch 1.1.4—the Entities are going to have a fun time with that one!Full Patch NotesFixes & Other ChangesTutorial LevelImproved appearance and behavior of tutorial pop-ups, including some that pause timeReworked the Fallen Dog sectio...

    Early Access Patch 1.1.2

Hello again, everyone! Early Access Patch 1.1.2 is finally here! This patch includes an overhaul to the interaction system and Fetch mode's supplies system. In the original Fetch mode, there were only five supply items to find, with each contributing one point to the quota. Now, you will be able to find over 50 unique items, with more coming in the future! When an item spawns, it will be given a random quota value from within a range. For common items like canned food, lower quota values will appear more often than higher ones. You might find a can of corn worth one quota point, or a bottle of medicine worth four. Each new category of supplies—food, medicine, resources, and recreation—have several items ranging in spawning frequency from common to rare, so keep an eye out for more valuable supplies on your Expedition! Additionally, you will now find buried supplies scattered around the map. These rare spawns have the same loot pool as the main supply spawn locations, but frequency values are flipped. If you manage to find a spot to dig, there's more than likely something worthwhile there. Many of you will be happy to hear that the interaction system has also been greatly improved! Before, interaction prompts would occasionally disappear, or never appear in the first place. The new system is much more consistent and includes more details than before, including the new quota value for supplies! Some examples can be seen in the above screenshots. The full list of patch notes can be found below. As always, thank you for your patience and keep an eye out for the next update! Oh, and to celebrate three months of The Good Dog, the game will be on sale until Tuesday morning!Full Patch NotesFeaturesOverhaul to Fetch supplies systemMany new supply items and types addedDifferent items can contribute varying amounts to QuotaAdded buried items that can be dug upMay be high value items, or garbageGreatly improved item interaction systemMore details on interaction prompts, including s...

    Early Access Patch 1.1.1

Hello again, everyone! After spending a week or so on the Test Branch, Patch 1.1.1 is finally ready for release! This patch brings a new Progression Pass, called Concrete Jungle, and it's available to you for no extra cost. The pass contains 50 levels of new cosmetic content, including the first wave of skins for ROV-R the robot dog and some new models for the squeaky toy. I think everyone will find something they like in this pass! The new Endless Fetch game mode is based on the Fetch mode you've become used to over the past few months. When finishing an Expedition in Endless Fetch, however, you will continue on to another instead of returning to the lobby. Each subsequent Expedition will be harder than the last, and will require more resources and objectives to complete your Quota. From the lobby, you can choose to play Endless Fetch on a single map repeatedly, or have the game select a random map every time you move on to a new Expedition. To help offset the increased difficulty, you can now collect an overflow of supplies during your Expedition. Any extra supplies collected during an Expedition will carry over to your next Expedition's Quota. How far do you think you can go?This patch also comes with a lot of optimizations and fixes that will hopefully make the game run better and more consistently. A full list of fixes can be found below. As always, thank you all for your support and feedback. Be on the lookup for more updates in the near future, including new objectives for the Fetch modes!Full Patch NotesFeaturesNew free Progression PassIncludes 50 tiers of new skins for dogs, dog beds, the squeaky toy, and ROV-R the Robot DogNew dog breedsAkita Inu PoodleUpdated Dachshund model and animationsEndless Fetch mode addedContinue immediately into a new Fetch Expedition after completing the lastCan choose between repeating the same map or moving to a random map every Expedition from the Lobby menuEach Expedition becomes gradually harderAny supplies collected above the...
