Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts

Yaza Games · Published by Mythwright

Content notice: Scriptorium is a game for scribes of all ages. However, those familiar with medieval art will know that it can be a little... cheeky. We have embraced this tradition, keeping the humor as bizarre and bare as the original scribes intended. Expect to encounter cartoon bottoms and figures in need of a fig leaf or two - all presented with a wink and a nod, with no explicit or scandalous anatomical details.

About the Game

Trumpets in bottoms, horses with human faces, great gilded lettering framed by angels and lilies - nobody has vision like a medieval artist. Hey, that's you! Welcome to your very own illuminated manuscript workshop, the Scriptorium - a cozy, relaxing creative space with no timers and no pressure.

  • Create your own character in Story Mode, and take commissions from prestigious patrons in a kingdom overflowing with gossip. Illustrate battles and romances, decorate love letters and blackmail notes, design maps, masquerade balls, or, *cough*, bizarre artworks. With every request, you will help shape a royal drama that must be seen to be believed.

  • Prefer pure creativity? In Sandbox Mode, Scriptorium becomes your medieval “Canva”. Blank parchment, the entire library of medieval assets, and no clients or commissions - just you and your boundless imagination!

The composition screen is the creative heart of Scriptorium, where you decide how you want your masterpiece to look. Choose from light and dark parchments in many shapes and sizes, then drag and drop design elements directly onto your canvas. Work with a rich library of 1000+ pictures based on real medieval art - from beasts and bugs to princes and paupers, faces and butts, clothing, expressions, vegetation, oddments and decorative marginalia. Add text using medieval fonts adorned with ornate uppercase letters to complete your illuminated pages.

A colorful cast of clients brings you requests of all kinds - grand battles between snails and knights, wholesome scenes of peace, love, and the plague... and those aren't even the weird ones. But the customer is always right! Your job is to be creative and have fun as you fulfill their wishes in your own style. Spread your art across the kingdom and become celebrated by bards and historians for centuries to come.

Turn your Scriptorium into the coziest workshop in the kingdom. Spend your earnings to decorate your space with furniture, lighting, tapestries, flowers, windows, columns, and carpets - then make it truly yours with a pet companion by your side, from a purring cat to a loyal dog, or even a tiny dragon. Home is where the art is!

Our imaginative players have embraced Scriptorium's potential by creating:

  • Letters and invitations

  • Decorated song lyrics and illustrated quotes

  • Tarot cards

  • Cute stickers

  • Coloring pages to print

  • Desktop wallpapers

  • Fantasy maps

  • Props and handouts for tabletop RPG sessions

  • Medieval recreations of games, movies, and pop culture moments

  • And memes, of course!

Scriptorium is built for sharing. Save your work to your gallery, then export it as a PNG optimized for printing and social sharing. Show it to the world, or keep it forever as your own little masterpiece.

We think you'll love Scriptorium if you enjoy…

A Little To The Left, Sticky Business, Tiny Glade, Hozy, House Flipper 2, Make Room, Canvas of Kings, Is this seat taken?, Tiny Book Shop, Strange Antiquities, Blender, Wallpaper Engine, Inkulinati, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Pentiment

Literally and figuratively. After launch, two exceptional creators emerged from within our community - Zark & Sophtea - who were making truly extraordinary artworks in Scriptorium, inspired by other games. As it turned out, they run their own film studio in France in their day-to-day life... so we figured this would make for a wonderful story if we entrusted the Accolades Trailer to members of our community! We're honestly blown away by this trailer, and incredibly grateful to have such talented artists among our players. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - to each one of you who played our game. We're Back! Next Update Teaser... and something special is coming!

Hello Scribes! We know, we know - it's been a while since our last Steam post. First, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved (and much-needed after how busy we were working on the April release and the June major update) vacation, and right after coming back we got back to the drawing board and started planning what's next for Scriptorium. Sorry for the silence - but today we're back with quite a lot of news to catch you up on!New content update is coming next month!Let's start with the most important part to clear up any doubts: Scriptorium development is not over yet, and we are not slowing down! Next month you can expect another content update to be released for Scriptorium, with some awesome stuff inside. And while it won't be as big as our major update with the Balatro crossover last month, we've spent quite a lot of time assessing your recent feedback and got some genuinely cool new features and assets lined up for you. What's inside? It's a secret for now, but as a sneak peek... let's just say the word "template" is going to be significant. Watch this space - more details coming soon! (and yes, some drawable assets are heading your way, so keep your quills sharp!)Hotfix is out! we're fixing corrupted savesIn the meantime, over the past few days we released a hotfix addressing a nasty issue with corrupted saves. Some of you reported that after the last update your existing save files created during the early days of Scriptorium stopped working and the game forced you to start from scratch - thank you so much for flagging it and for your patience, we know such bugs suck and that's always the worst kind of bug to run into as a player. Happy to tell you that this issue should now be resolved when it comes to issues with existing save files.First Art Challenge results are in!Time to announce the winner of our very first Steam Community Art Challenge! The winner is julysses.s.grant with this incredible Bioshock fanart! Huge congratulations to the winner, and a massi...

Yes, you read that right. Your favorite Jimbo from Balatro is now part of Scriptorium Story Mode! We teamed up with our friends behind Balatro for a very special crossover - Jimbo awaits you with a custom set of Balatro-flavored commissions, and he doesn't arrive empty-handed. Oh no, you have to know that a partnership of this kind is an opportunity for us to do something more than just throw a familiar face into the game.Along with Jimbo's arrival, we are adding some in-game assets that should help you create cards of your own! Hotfix #2 is here! and Sandbox Gallery sneak peek 👀

Hello Scribes!Good news - we finally have a fix for the performance issues! Today we are releasing a small hotfix update focused on the performance problems we have heard about over the past few weeks.Hotfix Update ContentsThis update is mostly addressed to players with older PC setups, especially those using slower hard disk drives (HDDs) who encountered very long loading times at launch and occasional hiccups during gameplay.Long story short: the problem was caused by how many files the game had to load at the same time. To fix this, we changed the game's file compression system. Now, much, much less data needs to be loaded when the game starts, which should drastically improve loading times for HDD users. As a bonus, the total game size is now even smaller, so you are saving some disk space too!Once you update the game and download the hotfix, the game should run much smoother on the mentioned setups. Please let us know if this solves the performance issues for you! As always, feel free to reach out if anything else is affecting your Scriptorium experience - we are always here to help. Sneak peek: Sandbox Gallery (coming soon!)To make this post worthwhile for those of you not needing a fix, we also prepared something special - a quick preview of one of key additions of our upcoming content update! We surely know that one of your most requested features is the Sandbox Gallery - so the ability to work on multiple sandbox artworks at the same time, saving them and getting back to editing them later. We're sooo happy to tell you that the work on this feature is going great! Soon, you will be able to save and work on many different sandbox creations at the same time.We wanted to share a mock-up of the gallery with you ahead of the launch - what do you think?Thank you so much for your patience. We want this feature to be well-designed and polished so it can be the perfect companion for all your future artworks!Thank you and speak to you soon,Your Yaza Games and Mythwrig...
