    Kicking Into High Gear

Earlier this year, I released the first playable build of Kaido Genkai to Patreon supporters after two and a half years of development in my spare time. It was such a nerve-wracking experience, showing my very first attempt at a game to people who actually paid money for it (what!). I felt confident in the initial builds, and early testing went well, or at least well enough. A few adjustments later, and the demo was released publicly on Steam. Then the Kickstarter became 150% funded, and we hit two stretch goals: the farm area and seaside/beach area. Not only am I feeling incredibly grateful for the support, but I’ve been blessed enough to recently resign at my day job - which I’m so thankful for, since I was probably going to lose it soon. And while I may live on rice and beans this year, I am able to work on Kaido Genkai full time! I am truly happy.I haven’t just been sitting around doing nothing and patting myself on the back, though. Here’s what’s been going on - both directly with the game and behind the scenes!Beyblades: Let It RipStarting off the post today is one of the most fun bugs that testers found: a physics issue where you could sometimes hold the handbrake and spin the car forever in what we dubbed “Beyblade mode.”I was absolutely delighted about this, but obviously we had to patch that out. I’m a little sad about it, but maybe it can be a bonus mode someday.Nothing remains of it except for this GIF. Never forget.Fixing What Players FindOne of the biggest benefits of people actually playing the game is discovering all the things I never managed to break myself. As expected, there were just so many little issues: cars getting stuck in strange wheelie states, vehicles sometimes disappearing, music not properly switching, traffic spawning underneath racers, menus losing controller focus.. and a million other bugs. The menu losing focus was crazy bad, and super apparent to almost all players. It was essentially a ‘soft lock’, where a player would have to Al...

Kickstarter Finished at Over 150% Funded!

Kaido Genkai’s Kickstarter has officially come to an end at 151% funded! What a wild ride. I was just chatting in Discord about how it's felt like the campaign lasted for ages. I was quite nervous at the start, but things really took off at a couple points. I am humbly grateful. This funding chart feels like a rollercoaster of slow and and fast!Thank You So Much, Once AgainWhether you backed the project, shared it with friends, joined the livestream, played the demo, posted fan art, or just cheered us on, you helped make this possible. I'm going to be working on Kaido Genkai full time as well, starting in August. Not just evenings and weekends anymore, the game may now completely consume me and the end product should represent that. c:And thanks to all of you, we also unlocked two stretch goals! The farm area with tiered rice paddies is coming to the game, along with a brand-new beach and seaside area to explore.Next StepsTo everyone who pledged for custom content such as a character, NPC name, billboard, or vehicle: I’ll be reaching out with information about the next steps soon. And even if you just pledged for a name credit - keep an eye on your emails for a questionnaire from Kickstarter! It will take a while to get through everybody, but I'll try to at least connect over the coming week or two, so you know you're on my radar. It will ask for more details concerning your pledge, including what name you'd like to use for the in-game credits. I'll also start working on the promised backer-exclusive wallpapers as well. c:More Community ArtOne of my favorite aspects of the community is how many talented folks are contributing their work! Check out some more awesome content shared from Discord. Choro-Q Style by Rogue13Dive Into The Sea by MohozumiThe Beach Episode by Wind-Up HeroCongratulations by JindopoN (completed, this time - wow!)Thanks everyone!Yours truly, Karo, Kaido Genkai / Karoshi Electric Corporation

    We’re Almost at the Farm

Hey everyone! We’re officially down to the final 5 days of the Kaido Genkai Kickstarter campaign! I'd call it quite a success thus far - we hit our funding goal, sold out all of the custom car tiers, and backers got their hands on a bunch of custom characters and billboards. This campaign and demo release built up so much momentum around Kaido Genkai in such a short time. Thank you all for being a part of it. Only $2K to the FarmWe’re heading into the final few days, and we’re just over $2,000 away from unlocking the Farm stretch goal which would add a tiered rice paddy / farm area. I think it would be an amazing environment for some cool jumps and beautiful scenery. This environment would be inspired by Smugglers Run 2 on the PS2 / Gamecube / Xbox. As a young teen, I remember being really struck by the Vietnam level for including rice fields and how you could do jumps off of the banks between them, and it's stuck with me ever since. I'd like to recreate that feeling for all of you.  Kaido Genkai Final Weekend StreamWe also have a livestream coming up this Friday, July 10 at 7pm Pacific on YouTube to celebrate the final weekend of the campaign! I’ll be joined by vehicle artist Hacao, Illustrator holeecrab and possibly a few other friends where we'll answer questions, talk about the game, and generally hang out and be silly while making one more push toward the stretch goal. Here's the direct link:  Don’t Miss the Final StretchIf you’ve been waiting to back the project, now is the time. You can still grab a copy of the game, get your name in the credits, add a custom billboard, or become an NPC in the world of Kaido Genkai! Just think, your OC could be seen among all these beautiful faces... And even if you can’t back the project, sharing the campaign still helps a ton. Posting about it, sending it to a friend, wishlisting the game on Steam, or stopping by the stream all genuinely make a difference. The Community Keeps CookingLastly, I wanted to share more art from the...

We’re Funded! Thank You So Much!

We officially hit our Kickstarter funding goal over the weekend! This message is a little late, but I wanted to take a moment to properly say thank you. You're Amazing!Kaido Genkai hit its $50,000 funding goal on Kickstarter only a few days after I added the bundled car tiers with other rewards, and the response has honestly been incredible. Across all tiers, backers have pledged for 9 billboards, 17 custom characters, and 10 cars (which is all we allotted for the cars, so they remain sold out). It still feels surreal seeing those slots fill up and knowing that real supporters, creators, and artists are going to become part of Kaido Genkai in some way. So cool! And there is still two weeks left of the campaign! Also, we crossed 50,000 Steam wishlists around the same time! $50k funded and 50k wishlists... nice, it's been a good week! Stretch GoalsNow that we’re funded, we’re officially climbing toward our first stretch goal: $60,000 CAD to unlock the Farm area. We're already about $7k CAD away, seeing as we just hit $53k funded as I write this! This would add a new tiered rice paddy / countryside farm area to the world, which I think would be awesome for exploration, scenery, and of course jumps. I also want to give a special shoutout to one of our billboard backers, Yasoku Publishing. They run a very cool online store featuring independent partnered artists, including my illustrator holeecrab and vehicle artist Hacao! I’m really excited because this is exactly the kind of thing I hoped the billboard tier would make possible: real creators and cool projects becoming part of Kaido Genkai’s world. There is also a real-life JDM vehicle importer who have pledged as well. I love it. In addition to billboards, there are still character-related tiers available, so if you’ve ever wanted to see yourself or your OC appear in an anime-inspired racing game, this is your chance! If you're already a backer, you can modify your existing pledge pretty easily if this sounds interesting...

    We Sold Out of Cars!

I was planning to make a big announcement when we hit 50% funded on Kickstarter, but thanks to all of you, we blasted straight past that and landed at over 80% funded in just a 24 hour time period. The game's stats are looking incredible too: 47,000+ wishlists, 17,000+ library adds, 10,000+ players and a 96% positive review rating from over 200 reviews. At the time of writing, we're also just shy of 90% funded! That's honestly amazing. I'm incredibly grateful and humbled by the support you've shown Kaido Genkai. Look at this crazy funding graph:Phenomenal. All custom car tiers are now officially closed. After creating combination tiers that bundled cars with other rewards, the 5 cars we had allotted sold out within a handful of hours. I then doubled the number of available cars from five to ten, and those sold out too. I wish I could add more, but the amount of scope it would take would start to impact development timelines, and I don't want to delay the game. However, those ten cars alone contributed over $20,000 toward the Kickstarter goal, which is absolutely incredible. Thank you.Get a custom billboard and character! If you missed out on the car tiers, there are still plenty of ways to get involved. You can grab the game at a discount, get early access, add a character to the world, get a custom billboard, or take advantage of the new Character + Billboard combo tier. That combo is especially great for VTubers, YouTubers, artists, manga creators, writers, and other creatives. You can have your original character appear in Kaido Genkai while also promoting your project, channel, comic, novel, or artwork on an in-game billboard. If this sounds cool, you can check out the Kickstarter here. Your support really makes a difference.Next stepsFor everyone who backed a custom content tier, don't worry about reaching out right away. Once the Kickstarter ends, I'll be contacting everyone individually to work through the details of your cars, characters, and billboards. It may ta...
