About this game

Traditional Fighting Game Combat, Built for Single-Player

What if there was a traditional JRPG with a battle system that plays like a fighting game? What if a fighting game took single-player content seriously?

Fablelight blends tight, traditional fighting game mechanics with a fully playable story campaign focusing on single-player content first, instead of online ranked.

  • fight one-on-one battles

  • progress through a branching route

  • earn experience & level up

  • unlock skills & abilities

  • recruit new allies, discover playable characters

  • shape your story with alternate paths

Battle through a handcrafted world as Rojas, a glass canon fighter wielding a magical sword with cosmic power, and uncover a twisted fairytale filled with secrets, allies, and branching paths. Learn mid-range zoning from Granny Boom, the crazed pyromaniac and demolition expert, or simply button mash the unga bunga barbarian Krog. There's a character for every playstyle.

Motion Inputs, Special Cancels, Cross-Ups

If you play fighting games, this will feel familiar. If you don’t, the game teaches you through gameplay -- not tutorials that stop the action.

Combat in Fablelight is built on traditional fighting-game fundamentals:

  • Hold back to block

  • Motion inputs (quarter-circles, charge, 360 motions)

  • One-on-one 2D battles

  • Hand-drawn sprite animation

  • Precise hitboxes, spacing, and timing

Traditional fighting game archetypes: Grapplers, Zoners, Rush-Down
    +
JRPG Archetypes: Black Mage, Healers, Warriors

Skill Tree for Each Character, Job System Inspired by FFT

Outside of battle, Fablelight expands into a full action RPG structure:

  • Character leveling and skill trees

  • Unlockable abilities and combat mechanics

  • Equipment and gear that meaningfully affect play

  • Exploration across a connected world map

  • Branching paths, optional encounters, and secrets

Progression enhances your options, but skill always matters!

Fully Fleshed Out Worlds with Multiple Hidden Paths & Characters to Discover

Set in a strange, fairy-tale-inspired world, Fablelight tells a character-driven original story through battles, dialogue, and player choice without relying on long cinematic cutscenes.

    Fablelight on Kickstarter!

Fablelight is Coming to Kickstarter September 29th!It’s happening.Fablelight is launching on Kickstarter on September 29th! For the past couple of years, I’ve been building Fablelight into the game I’ve always wanted to make: a colorful single-player fighting game RPG inspired by fighting games, Saturday morning cartoons, and the kind of weird fantasy adventures where you slowly assemble a party of lovable idiots. You’ll fight through a story, build a party of characters, learn new abilities through your relationships with them, discover new equipment and upgrades, and, most importantly, beat up a lot of people, creatures, and monsters. The Kickstarter will help me push Fablelight much further.I’ll be revealing new fighters, bosses, areas, crossover characters, physical rewards, plushies, and some extremely ridiculous high-tier rewards throughout the campaign. There will also be a few surprises I’ve been keeping secret. Why Kickstarter?Fablelight has grown considerably since I first started working on it.What began as a small fighting game experiment has turned into a much bigger single-player RPG built around fighting game combat. Kickstarter gives me an opportunity to expand the game while keeping it weird, personal, and independent. The campaign will help fund things like:More characters and animationNew stages and environmentsAdditional story contentMusic, sound and voice workBoss fights and enemiesPolishing the RPG and progression systemsAnd some ideas I absolutely should not be trusted with money to createYou Can Follow the Kickstarter NowThe Kickstarter pre-launch page is live:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/815757475/fablelight-a-single-player-fighting-game-rpgIf Fablelight looks like your kind of game, hitting “Notify me on launch” is one of the biggest ways you can help right now.The campaign officially begins September 29th.Between now and then I’ll also be sharing more about the characters, world, story, Kickstarter rewards, and what I’m trying to accomp...

Lexington Comic & Toy Con this weekend!

Fablelight is Coming to LEXCON This Weekend! This weekend, September 4–6, I’m bringing Fablelight to the Lexington Comic & Toy Convention at the Central Bank Center! I’ll have the latest build set up and playable all weekend. I’m currently expecting to be in the board game area, so if you’re at the convention, come hunt me down and play a few rounds.Fablelight has changed a LOT since the last time I showed it locally. New mechanics, new character stuff, multi-enemy fights, plenty of balance changes, and probably several new ways for players to break things that I haven't discovered yet. (That last part is half the reason I keep bringing it to events.) So whether you’re into fighting games, RPGs, indie games, or you just happen to walk past the booth and think “what the hell is that?”, come grab a controller. Play the game.Fight your friends.Fight me.Break something. Then tell me what you think.See you at LEXCON!

    Weekly Update

Hey everyone,A new Fablelight pre-alpha build is now available to play-testers. Check out the patch notes here: Patch Notes This update focuses on single-player functionality. The biggest additions are the new Pushblock mechanic, expanded Arcade Run structure, new story examples for Rojas, Krog, and Granny, updated backgrounds, improved results screen functionality, and the first real pass on music/audio implementation. This is still very early, but the build should be much easier to understand and more representative of where Fablelight is heading. Moving forward, you can expect updates every Saturday morning Have fun! and let me know what you think.

    Fablelight Development Update, What's Next?

Fablelight Development Update, What's Next?A little over a week ago, Fablelight was featured at Trials of Olympus 9 for its first public tournament appearance. The goal wasn't to prove the game was finished. The goal was to answer a much simpler question:Can this actually work? The answer was a clear yes.The event gave me exactly what I needed: real feedback from real fighting game players.Since then, I've been working through that feedback and putting together a new pre-alpha build focused on improving the overall experience. Blocking has been redesigned, meter gain has been refined, Granny's infamous turret has received a long list of fixes and nerfs, controller support has begun, and the overall presentation of the game is becoming easier for new players to understand. The game is still very early, but it is already in a much stronger place than the Olympus build. So when will Fablelight return to tournaments? Not immediately.Olympus 9 taught me what needed work. Right now my focus is on three things:StabilityPresentationA proper demoThe next time many players see Fablelight, I don't want it to feel like "the same prototype with a few fixes."I want it to feel like a major step forward. That means continuing to polish the game, improving onboarding, refining combat systems, and making the overall experience more approachable for people who are seeing Fablelight for the first time.Looking Beyond LexingtonOne of the biggest lessons from Olympus wasn't just about the game, it was about the community.Over the next few weeks I plan to continue sharing builds with testers, streamers, and members of the fighting game community while also attending more local and regional events. That means visiting new scenes, meeting new players, and gathering feedback from people who have never touched the game before. The goal is to make sure Fablelight isn't only improving in a vacuum. If you're in the area checkout Olympus 10: https://www.start.gg/tournament/trials-of-olympus-10-ft-gbvsr-mb...

    And the winner is...

Uncle George takes the Grand Finals at Trials of Olympus #9 The first ever cash money bracket was held in the home of the legendary Muhammad Ali, but on Saturday, June 6th, it was Uncle George's Granny Boom that stung like a bee.I showed up early just in case anything needed to be set up or fixed, but that ended up being one of the best parts of the day. A few players got to try the game before the bracket started, I got to meet members of the local FGC, and Button Checker (our amazing TO, thank you) even invited me to join live commentary on stream. I am not a competitive player, and I have definitely never run a bracket before, so watching the whole thing unfold was fascinating. Players started slow as they learned the game, but pretty quickly they were finding real tech. Granny Boom became the villain of the night with some truly degenerate turret and projectile nonsense, while Rojas and Krog had plenty of busted moments of their own. The Grand Finals came down to Uncle George vs. Mason, with Granny Boom vs. Rojas in the final match. In the end, Uncle George took it and became the first ever Fablelight bracket champion. The crowd was laughing, screaming, cheering, and reacting to all the chaos on screen. The community welcomed me and this little prototype in a way I did not expect, and I left with a ton of feedback, new friends, and a pretty unforgettable memory.Huge thank you to everyone at Trials of Olympus #9, the TOs, the players, the stream team, and everyone who gave Fablelight a shot. Also, congratulations to Uncle George (who has now officially made more money from Fablelight than I have).
