About the Game

Dokkalfar is a modern Metroidvania following Vivi, a Dark Elf hunter tracking the sorcerer Erasmus and his cult across a vast fantasy realm.
Master fast, acrobatic movement and shadow magic as you fight, explore, and uncover the truth behind a forbidden power capable of awakening ancient horrors.
Every path forward is shaped by your abilities, equipment, and choices as you grow stronger through fluid traversal and reactive combat.
Vivi's journey comes to life through beautifully hand-drawn illustrations during dialogue and narrative screens, all set to an original soundtrack with melodic, memorable compositions that define its dark atmosphere.
Play as a Dark Elf Hero
Chain together slides, evades, and aerial dashes to fluidly navigate complex environments and aggressive encounters.
Strike from a distance with Vivi’s signature whip, execute precise counters with her parry dagger, or debilitate foes with poisoned darts. Adapt your approach by equipping weapons and gear found throughout the realm.
Combine acrobatic movement with your arsenal to dictate the rhythm of battle.
Master Shadow Magic
Dark Elf magic is subtle, precise, and lethal. Vanish from sight with shadow cloak, peer through darkness with heightened perception, and blink through hazards using Shadow Step.
As your power grows, unleash darkness orbs, life-draining attacks, and levitation to dominate hostile territory and turn it into your personal hunting ground.
Forbidden techniques expand your control over both combat and the hidden paths of the world.
Choose your approach
Early in your journey, Vivi is guided by mentors who introduce different approaches to combat and magic.
You can specialize in weapons, focus on shadow magic, or blend both into your own style. Some techniques and equipment are tied to your chosen direction, while others remain available to all.
Whether you commit to a focused build or forge your own hybrid approach, your playstyle evolves through the choices you make.
Level Up and Build Vivi
Defeat enemies and complete quests to gain experience to level up, Leveling up improves Vivi's core attributes.
Unlock new abilities and discover weapons, armor, and relics that not only increase power, but change how Vivi fights, moves, and explores the world.
Experiment with different equipment, stats, and resistances to shape loadouts that suit your preferred playstyle.
Face Powerful Enemies
The world is overrun with corrupted creatures, ancient monsters, and the cult of the sorcerer Erasmus.
Encounters are relentless and demand constant movement, timing, and awareness as enemies close distance, control space, and punish hesitation.
Survive by weaving together traversal, shadow magic, and weapons as you adapt to increasingly dangerous threats.
Explore an interconnected Fantasy World
Travel across a connected world of frozen tundra, ancient jungles, abandoned mines, haunted forests, forgotten dungeons, and villages.
Discover hidden paths, secret rooms, and optional rewards.
Unlock shortcuts and fast travel as new abilities open previously unreachable places.

Developer Update – Combat, Visual Direction, and Our Next Showcase
Hey everyone,It’s been a little while since our last update, but we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes.Since the demo launched, we’ve continued gathering and responding to player feedback while reworking major parts of the game. Some areas are getting much closer to the vision we’ve had from the start, while others still need more time and iteration.Combat & Movement UpdatesOne of our biggest focuses has been refining movement and combat. The gameplay is evolving to feel much more intentional while still staying fast and expressive. To give players more control, most actions can now be canceled into other actions, allowing combat and traversal to flow together more naturally. When everything clicks, the movement feels incredibly satisfying — especially with Vivi’s aerial mobility, which is opening the door for some really fun gameplay possibilities. We’ve also been reworking weapon responsiveness and attack buffering. Attacks now queue more reliably, so if you press attack twice, it actually feels like two deliberate attacks instead of dropped inputs or missed timing windows. Small changes like this make a huge difference in overall game feel.Right now, the current demo doesn’t fully showcase these improvements yet, but this is absolutely the direction we’re heading in.Visual DirectionThe biggest challenge for us at the moment is the visual presentation.Originally, I wanted to push the game toward a flatter, stylized illustrative look. In some ways it worked — the flatter lighting and reduced shadows helped create a more illustrated feel — but ultimately it didn’t land the way I hoped. There were still too many realistic elements mixed into the presentation, and instead of feeling cohesive, the visuals ended up reading more like a low-fi prototype for a lot of players. That feedback has been important, and we agree. We have plans to significantly update the art direction and presentation moving forward so the game better captures the atmosphere and identity we want i...Read full article on Community Announcements (brandon)Patch NotesOfficial
Development Update & New Demo
Hello friends, followers of our game Dokkalfar.I wanted to share a quick update on where we are with development.A New Demo Is AvailableA new demo is now available! This demo is a small excerpt featuring the mini-boss from the Lizard Temple. We designed it to be a short quest that quickly gives you a sense of the look and feel of the game, while also introducing you to the world and story. It’s intentionally brief, but it should give you a taste of what we’re building. What We've LearnedAfter seeing your feedback and spending more time with the demo ourselves, we feel confident that we have a strong foundation. At the same time, there are a few fundamental things we want to improve. Here are the points we hear most often:Animations feel a bit stiffMany abilities are not communicated clearly enough. Eg. Shield, Dash. The story isn’t coming through as well as it shouldThe whip needs more range and the overall feel needs improvementWhat Players Are LovingOn the other hand, there are also things players consistently tell us they enjoy:The musicThe art style and illustrationsThe RPG elements, items that affect statsThe intuitiveness and responsiveness of the controlsThe secrets and explorationViviSo while there’s plenty to fix and refine, there’s also a lot that’s already resonating with players. What Happens NextThe general feeling—both from players and from our own perspective—is that the game feel is close, but it needs a little more time in the oven.Because of that, we’re going to pause pushing forward with new content for a bit and focus on improving the core experience. Our goal is to address the issues players are noticing while doubling down on the things people already love. There isn’t a strict timeline for this phase. We’re going to keep working, keep listening to feedback, and keep refining until the game properly communicates the fantasy we’re aiming for:being a dark elf hero in a classic action-adventure side-scroller.A Note on Trailers & ScreenshotsOne thing we’...Read full article on Community Announcements (brandon)Patch NotesOfficial
Happy New Year! A Dokkalfar Development Update
Happy New Year!I wanted to share a development update on Dokkalfar and let you know what we’ve been working on.A NEW DEMO IS IMMINENTFirst and foremost: a new demo is coming very soon. It’s currently being tested on the playtest branch — huge thanks to everyone who’s been helping us test so far! This demo is a completely new, self-contained experience. We rebuilt it from the ground up with a clear goal:Set up the game’s core narrativeDeliver a focused slice of gameplayAvoid spoilers or wasted progressThe result is a 5–10 minute narrative experience that culminates in a proper boss fight — a concentrated taste of what the full game is aiming to be.We’ll be updating the demo fairly quietly at first. As a very small indie team, we can’t afford large-scale playtesting, so we’ll be relying on early player feedback to help vet the build. That means we’ll need your help:Play the demoShare feedbackSpread the word if you enjoy itPERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTSAlongside the new demo, we’ve made meaningful performance improvements across the game. The upcoming demo is now playable on Steam Deck, which is a big step forward from earlier builds. Performance can still dip in more demanding scenes — especially environments with heavy particle effects — as we continue balancing visual quality and performance. If you have the option, we currently recommend streaming to Deck for the smoothest experience. That said, a lot of work has gone into getting the game back on the right track for handheld play, and this is something we’ll continue refining as development progresses.NEW MUSICYou may have noticed some new music in recent builds.Vilakshan and his team have been hard at work crafting the soundtrack of Dokkalfar, and we’re incredibly happy with how it’s shaping up. This is a clip from one of our Ice Tower dungeon which previews a new music track. Follow us on YouTube for more OST drops!WHAT’S NEXTFor now, we’re continuing to focus on building the game:New environmentsNew weaponsNew spells and ...Read full article on Community Announcements (brandon)AnnouncementsOfficial
Introducing our very first playable demo!
We are excited to share that a playable demo is now available! This demo is designed to give players a taste of how Dokkalfar plays. It begins by equipping you with genre common abilities and a simple loadout, allowing you to dive into the game experience more swiftly. The demo map is teeming with enemies, loot, and hidden secrets! You'll find numerous NPCs to engage with and shops stocked with extra abilities to experiment with. Our primary inspiration comes from the DS-era Castlevania games, which we believe represent the pinnacle of game design. However, we aimed to modernize these concepts for today’s audience by incorporating numerous quality-of-life improvements, enhanced visuals, and gameplay that values your time. We sincerely hope you enjoy this contemporary classical experience! That being said, this is just the first of many demos to come. After nearly two years of hard work, we believe the game is finally ready to start gaining support! Currently, this is a fully self-funded project, but we truly need your assistance to demonstrate to publishers that there is a demand for this game! So, please add us to your wishlist! It may sound cliché, but this game is crafted by gamers for gamers, and we genuinely value player feedback. We encourage you to share your thoughts with us as we aim to create an exceptional game!We sincerely hope you enjoy everything we've poured into this initial demo and look forward to having you follow us on our development journey!Read full article on Community Announcements (brandon)AnnouncementsOfficial
