Navigate through a unique blend of card games and strategic challenges in Recesses. Developed by Sanjuny, this 2024 indie title invites you to uncover the hidden meaning behind a familiar 5th-grade setting.
About this game
In this game, losing is good! You get to see new dialogue, try new strategies, and win or lose, you always get another booster pack of cards to strengthen your collection.
Making it all the way from Monday to the boss of the playground on Friday is no easy task, but each day's victory brings you closer to the truth. Although it may not be what you expected.
Features:
- Over 30 original music tracks by CoZyro and Kasey Ozymy (Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass) that will make you go, "Wow! The music in this game has no right to be that good."
- Graphics that only look like they were drawn by a fifth grader. A grown up did draw them and he tried really hard.
- 100+ cards with unique abilities, art, combos, and flavor text.
- Over 110,000 words of dialogue with multiple scenarios depending on your win/loss record.
- More than 13 different elementary school opponents with their own strategies, theme songs, and surprisingly philosophical monologues.
- At least 8 bird puns of varying quality.
- And 1 goat.
Recesses is recommended for players age 13 and up. It contains a few instances of mild profanity.
Recent reviews/comments:
- "Best RPG Deckbuilder I've seen in a while. Mechanically this game is what the Pokemon TCG should have been." (VLPN)
- "This game's a lot deeper than it looks on the surface, honestly I came for the cutesy card battling and have been amazed by the quality of the writing. Now I can't stop playing it just because I want to see more of what the characters have to say." (Ferdy)
- "I can't stress this enough; this is one of the most compelling narratives I've seen in YEARS." (supremelordender5705)
- "Recesses is the Dark Souls of Card Games." (Dr.Garushi)
Main game playtime is approximately 15-30 hours, with hours of extra post-game challenge content. The Extended Demo is approximately 5-10 hours.
Mouse/Windows OS required for gameplay. Recesses has not been tested to play with controllers, Steam Deck, or other operating systems or hardware.

2 Year Anniversary Update with EVEN MORE New Cards!
Hello everyone! I can't believe Recesses is 2 years old already. It feels like just yesterday that it came out, and I was expecting 2 negative reviews and tumbleweeds. But thanks to all of you who gave it a chance, and left great comments and reviews, it's reached more people than I ever thought possible. So thank you! As a small recognition of the 2 year anniversary, I've added 4 brand new cards to the game, and buffed a few existing cards. If you want a breakdown of the updates, then read on. To confirm you're playing on the latest Version 1.3 (or higher), open Recesses and go to Game Options and check the upper left corner. If it's a lower version, just restart Steam and it should update automatically. NEW CARDS These four new cards each aim to fill gaps that I felt were missing, and boost strategies that needed some help. Here's all four of them: https://i.imgur.com/E8mRZjQ.png If you want to explore them on your own, go for it! But if you want more details on the thought process behind them, here's some details on each card. (There are spoilers in the explanations, so it's recommended to not read the spoilers if you haven't finished the game yet.) https://i.imgur.com/iqy3Y35.png - Created to give Cute another win-ability Battalien, since it only had one "real" one - Also gives Kahaz Captain another card to synergize with when played "fairly" - This card may bring along some of their elderly buddies to the gym sometimes too... https://i.imgur.com/QX9IVew.png - Created to give Brepch Skinshedder ships a boost in strength, turning all of the setup cards into powerhouses after they've been used - Also combos with other cards in smaller ways, like Katsi Captain, Tel-maq Elliptoid, and more - Will always give star-rares a similar star-rare ability, so it can be good as backup if their powerful abilities get altered https://i.imgur.com/RvgALcy.png - Created to give Elder ships a boost in strength, since if you have one or more in your ship, you automatically start wit...Read full article on Community Announcements (Sanjuny)Patch NotesOfficial
1.5 Year Anniversary Update with MORE New Cards!
Hello everyone! I was planning on releasing an update for the 2 year anniversary five months from now in August, but then I finished it early and decided to release it now... for the 1.5 year anniversary instead. That's just as important a milestone, right?! This update comes with four new cards in the main game, some buffs to old cards, and a few new post-game things. If you want a breakdown of the updates, then read on. To confirm you're playing on the latest Version 1.2 (or higher), open Recesses and go to Game Options and check the upper left corner. If it's a lower version, just restart Steam and it should update automatically. NEW CARDS These four new cards each aim to put cool-but-not-very-strong cards in the spotlight, and boost strategies that needed some help. Here's all four of them: https://i.imgur.com/kHp6doT.png If you want to explore them on your own, go for it! But if you want more details on the thought process behind them, here's some details on each card. (There are spoilers in the explanations, so it's recommended to not read the spoilers if you haven't finished the game yet.) https://i.imgur.com/MC3rvXN.png - Created to give fan-favorite cards like Puuts Peptalker and Oowoo Playlanx a reason to be played beyond the very early game. - Gives mono-Cute ships some card advantage potential when paired with Puuts Buffsinger. - I wonder what happens when it gains a strength to Elder... https://i.imgur.com/s4rs14Q.png - Lethoggl Doozer is a fan-favorite card that falls off after the early game... but that's only if you can play one. What if you can play seven?! - Varies up strategies for Battaliens that put more cards in your ship. - Wouldn't it just be hilarious if an opponent's card somehow gained this ability? https://i.imgur.com/hPiYKTR.png - Mono-Scary was the weakest of all the mono-type ships, so this gives it a bit of a boost. - Scary also lacked a good turn-one play against Elders, but this one is very strong. - Gross sacrifice-ships were alrea...Read full article on Community Announcements (Sanjuny)Patch NotesOfficial
One Year Anniversary Update With NEW CARDS!
Hello everyone! It's been one year since Recesses released, and I'm still amazed by the response you all have given it. Getting to Very Positive on Steam was something I'd never thought possible (I figured I'd get 2 negative ratings and tumbleweeds), so thank you to everyone who has helped it get there! As a small celebration of the one year anniversary, I've prepared a little content update for the game by adding four new cards (plus a few other things). If you want a breakdown of the updates, then read on. And if not... then don't! To confirm you're playing on the latest Version 1.1, go to Game Options and check the upper left corner. If it's a lower version, just restart Steam and it should update automatically. Each of the new cards added in this update is a "captain," with an ability that triggers *inside* of the spaceship. And here's all four of them: https://i.imgur.com/ODKRMAD.png All of the captains were designed to help strategies that I felt could use a little boost. If you want to explore them on your own, go for it! But if you want more details on the thought process behind them, here's some details on each card. (There are some spoilers for other rare cards in the explanations, so it's recommended not to read those if you haven't finished the game yet.) https://i.imgur.com/OeP4QHE.png - Created to boost Battaliens with big weaknesses, particularly the Essences, turning them into 8-power monstrosities. - Another goal was to make synergy cards like Puuts Admirer and Tel-maq Resonator stronger if they lost their ability. - Now if your Puuts Admirer gets Ossh'am-ed, you can give it +4 power and take down that Ossh'am in battle! https://i.imgur.com/sJCtTaR.png - Created to boost "sacrifice" synergy spaceships, which were fun and strong but also fragile. - Can also help players struggling against Elders: just sacrifice something that negates an ability when it dies, and that'll help even the playing field. - Lots of fun cobbling together a win after getting ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Sanjuny)Patch NotesOfficial
Small Updates for Version 1.07
Hello everyone! It's been a while, but thank you for still taking the time to check out Recesses. The new version 1.07 of the game has made a few small changes: - In battle and in the collection screen, when you can click on a card, the mouse cursor will turn to a finger when hovering over that card, and the card will get a yellow outline. This should hopefully make it easier to see when you can/can't choose certain cards for sending them out, choosing for abilities, etc. - A few fixed graphical mistakes - A few fixed spelling/grammar mistakes in dialogue sections - A few lines of dialogue tweaked for better understanding To confirm you're playing on the latest Version 1.07, go to Game Options and check the upper left corner. If it's a lower version, just restart Steam and it should update automatically. As always if you have suggestions feel free to let me know. Thank you again for playing! -SanjunyRead full article on Community Announcements (Sanjuny)Patch NotesOfficial
Updates for Version 1.06
Hello, and thank you for playing my little game Recesses! The new version 1.06 update of the game has a few additions and bug fixes: ADDITIONS - Eight new Steam achievements have been added to the game. - Seven of them are for collecting certain amounts of total cards (100, 256, 500, etc) to give some value to opening dozens and dozens of duplicates. You can also now see your total number of cards opened in the collection screen, at the bottom of the black text box in the upper left. The game checks for achievements whenever you open a booster pack. - The other achievement is Goat. - There is now popup text/sound effect for when you have 8 saved spaceships with all different cards in them - The wording on Metl's ability has changed from "turn" to "transform" and now the cards affected by its "transform" abilities slightly change color too, to make it more clear what's happening. BUG FIXES - Added a very short delay between removing a card from your ship and then being able to remove another card, to prevent misclicks - Made it so you shouldn't see the encouragement scene for Tatiana's four-card challenge multiple times in a row when rematching her. - Made it so Ignix Erupter interacts correctly against the Disillusioner card. - Fixed a softlock when you somehow *only* have 2 active Metls in your spaceship at the same time. Note: this should not be possible! To confirm you're playing on the latest Version 1.06, go to Game Options and check the upper left corner. If it's a lower version, just restart Steam and it should update automatically. I've been having a great time reading about all of your experiences with the game in the discussion board and in the reviews. I really appreciate you taking a chance on an unknown game like this! I'm still looking into the feasibility of a few more small changes to the game, but as always if you have suggestions feel free to let me know. Thank you again for playing! -SanjunyRead full article on Community Announcements (Sanjuny)
