About this game
Developer Note
Due to external circumstances, the game is releasing earlier than I would ideally prefer. A significant refinement phase is planned for the next 1–2 months, during which I will continue improving and expanding the game.
These updates focus primarily on visual presentation, animations, gameplay fluidity, and some additional content.
Because first impressions matter greatly in a story-driven mystery game, players who prefer the most polished first playthrough are strongly recommended to wait for these updates, which I will announce here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When an engagement is broken off in a tragic manner in a small rural village in the early days of industrialization, a young student finds himself suddenly entangled in mysterious circumstances. A series of unnatural deaths will soon expose the rural idyll as a mere illusion.
Simulate the course of events To solve the mysteries, place yourself in the shoes of the perpetrator and commit the crimes. You are able to interact with your environment in complex ways, giving you great freedom in how you approach the solution.
Investigate the crime scene Look for clues and evidence and make a note of anything you think is relevant.
Talk to the people you meet and ask questions about anything you want, by specifying the person, place, time and object you wish to know about. No handholding You are left almost completely to your own devices in solving the cases. It’s up to you to prove your ingenuity and wit. But don’t worry, you’ll have several attempts to come up with the right solution.
Tightly-woven story Lovers of story-driven games will not be disappointed. Meet a range of interesting and sometimes curious people as you explore the beautiful village and its inhabitants while the story unfolds to its cathartic conclusion.
This game is the first chapter of a story told in three parts.
This game is intended for players who enjoy reading. The pacing is designed around a reading speed of approximately 200–240 words per minute.

Development Update
Hello everyone,It has now been two months since I released the initial version of An Exercise in Mortality – Chapter I.During that time I have made many improvements to the game. However, the past month has also been unusually busy outside of development, and as a result there are still several important refinements I would like to complete. I currently expect this work to take roughly another three weeks. My goal remains unchanged: to continue refining the game until I am confident it reflects the experience I want it to be.Once these refinements are complete, I will share another update before moving on to the next phase of development.I then intend to revisit the game's music. Due to time constraints during development, the soundtrack never received the level of attention I had hoped to give it. Some pieces I had planned are not yet part of the game, and several of the existing tracks are better described as demos than as finished soundtrack pieces. Alongside this, I will continue refining the game's visuals. With those improvements in place, I will finally begin the actual marketing phase. To mark that milestone, I also intend to run another discount for those who have been waiting to experience the game in a more refined state.Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support. It means a great deal to me, and I look forward to sharing the game in its finished form with all of you soon.Read full article on Community Announcements (CorDubiumArts)AnnouncementsOfficial
A Note About the Release
Hello everyone,I'm very happy to finally share this game with you.I also want to be transparent about something important. While the game tells its complete story and is fully playable from start to finish, I'm releasing it earlier than I would have preferred due to circumstances outside of my control.Over the next 1–2 months I will continue actively working on a defined set of improvements (and continue updating it while working on the second chapter), particularly focused on gameplay fluidity, presentation, animations, and overall polish. Some additional content will be included as well. These are not changes to the core story, but refinements intended to bring the experience closer to the version I originally envisioned. Because this is a story-focused game where the first impression is paramount, I want to be honest with players who prefer experiencing narrative games in their most polished state: It may be worth waiting for these updates before beginning your first playthrough.Alongside these updates, work on the second chapter is already underway and partly completed. This game is part of a larger trilogy, and my current goal is to complete the full story by 2028. I look forward to sharing more about that journey as development continues.Thank you to everyone who chooses to be part of the journey, whether you begin your playthrough now or later as the experience continues to evolve. I will share progress and updates here as they arrive.Thank you for your support and patience.Read full article on Community Announcements (CorDubiumArts)AnnouncementsOfficial
Launch
An Exercise in Mortality - Chapter I is now available. This project has been part of my life for many years and will continue to be one in the years to come. After a long journey of development, I'm happy to finally share the first of three chapters with you.In An Exercise in Mortality, you step into the role of a detective investigating why a seemingly peaceful village has suddenly become haunted by tragedy. To uncover the truth, you do not merely follow clues, but reconstruct events by placing yourself in the role of the perpetrator and simulating the crimes.I made this game entirely by myself, over many years, alongside an ordinary working life, and poured a great deal of care into creating its world, mysteries, and systems.Because An Exercise in Mortality is a text-rich, story-focused mystery game, reading and careful attention are central to the experience. If you decide to uncover the mysteries behind the tragedy, I hope you find the journey as compelling as I found bringing it to life.Thank you for your support.Read full article on Community Announcements (CorDubiumArts)
