DevBlog #13 - Making Movement feel good
Movement is more than just transportationAs a core mechanic for Earths Edge, movement is more than just a way to get from one objective to another. It is an important part of how you interact with the world around you, approach objectives and fight your enemies.Instead of simply running towards the next objective, we want players to actively use their surroundings to their advantage.Speed and MomentumSpeed is obviously important in a movement shooter like Earths Edge.Every class in Earths Edge has access to the same basic movement abilities: Sliding, double jump, wall-run and -climb. The Assault also has Tactical Sprint as a passive, making him even faster on open terrain.Especially sliding, wall running and double jumping increase your speed quite drastically, so chaining them together to maintain maximum speed is the preferred goal. Parkour environment While certain other movement shooters put very few limits on maximum speed, we’ve intentionally set maximum values to prevent players from simply speeding past everything on an objective map. We still want movement to be fast and rewarding, without letting it completely bypass the encounters and objectives we’ve designed.Specifically, movement speed is not cumulative.Instead, your speed gets reset when you land back on the ground and return to regular ground based movement. This is something we are still experimenting with, however. You’ll hopefully be able to test these mechanics very soon in our upcoming playtest, and I’ll challenge you to beat our personal best time of 23.17s in the parkour.Vertical MovementWe're trying to put an emphasis on vertical movement as well, giving players multiple options to reach high ground while outside of an EM-BR.Wall-climbing allows you to climb up certain surfaces, but it is not unlimited. After around two seconds, you’ll lose your grip and have to find another way to continue moving up, e.g. by combining it with a different movement option. The grapple hookThe Grapple Hook is by f...Read full article on Community Announcements (FlickyFlack)Community & EventsOfficial

DevBlog #12 - Game Loop
From Insertion to ExtractionWhen we started designing the mission structure for Earths Edge, we wanted every deployment to feel like a complete experience. From the moment you infiltrate the objective area until you extract we want you to have a good time.In this blog post, we're taking a look at an example mission. INFILEvery mission begins with a dropship insertion. During this short sequence, you can already scan the general area and prepare for whats ahead. You arrive with the equipment you selected before deployment. Dropship Insertion Changing classes is currently not supported, but depending on the playtest is obviously subject to change.RECCEBefore approaching the main objective, you'll have the opportunity to explore the map. Secondary objectives, resources, and other points of interest should invite you to leave the main path and investigate their surroundings.Example of a Lunom Digsite Some of these activities provide useful rewards, while others simply offer an alternative challenge for players looking to fully clear an area.OBJDepending on the mission type, you may be recovering assets, defending an important location, or eliminating a Lunomite threat. We're trying to make the objectives feel very different from each other and to encourage different playstyles. Objective Equipment arriving on Site The objective equipment pictures above, for example, needs to be defended against an increasing threat of lunomites. If all "Uplink Terminals" get destroyed before the data has been transmitted to the ark, the mission fails.CONTOnce the main objective is complete the gameplay changes again. Enemy spawns increase and specialized enemies start to appear more frequently as well.Reinforcements are disabled, since the objective has already been cleared. Hostile spawn rate increasesStaying longer may be worth the extra rewards you've previously collected, but failure to extract means loosing that as well.Your current objective is to reach the designated extraction area....Read full article on Community Announcements (FlickyFlack)AnnouncementsOfficial
DevBlog #11 - Progression
Play to earnIn Earths Edge we want our players to earn their attachments, guns, camos and EM-BR Modules by playing the game. We’ve mentioned this before, but we are deliberately avoiding paid battle passes, time-limited event cosmetics and pre-order bonuses to focus on things that are accessible just by the initial purchase.TL/DR: Play to earn.Mission completionEvery mission you complete contributes to your account and class based progression. Experience is earned based on your team’s performance, including how effectively enemies are eliminated, overall accuracy, completed objectives, and other key factors. Example End of Round Screen (WIP) Progress is only logged upon mission completion. It does not matter whether the mission is ultimately successful or not, but the majority of experience is earned through the completion of primary and secondary objectives. The ShopThe ARK Shop is the central requisition hub for Scorchers aboard the ARK.Here you'll be able to spend your earned credits to unlock new weapons for both Scorcher and EM-BR, camos, attachments and everything else needed on the battlefield. ARK Shop (WIP) As previously said, you'll only ever be able to earn credits via playing. When playing non dynamic difficulty, be sure to play on your hardest comfortable difficulty to maximize credit gain!Speaking of credit gain: The different costs of specific attachments is obviously highly subject to change, and will be tweaked depending on feedback from the upcoming playtest.Account LevelIncreasing your account level unlocks the purchase of additional EM-BR modules in the ARK Shop. Whether this is an additional Hardpoint, more Armor or simply additional cosmetics is entirely up to you. Fully customized EM-BR Unit in a Tank Configuration All classes share the same currently selected EM-BR Loadout, so it would only make sense to share the Account level as well. Both piloting an EM-BR Unit and beeing on foot gain account exp, which will be granted upon mission completion....Read full article on Community Announcements (FlickyFlack)AnnouncementsOfficial
